Hey all. Well, CR is still here on GoodReads. And Xmas is coming. So it seems like a good time to discuss what we might do in the months ahead.

It has been suggested that the book I'm wetting myself over right now might make a good holiday group read, and (predictably) I couldn't agree more. See the discussion here: /topic/show/...

I am keen to get back to doing polls for our usual themed group reads though in the new year. I also need to catch up with the bookshelves and making sure that the books nominated in our polls do get put up as group shelves for people to browse later. Is there still interest in all that stuff? Any ideas? Ways to make the group reads themselves more interesting?

The treasure hunt challenge finishes at the end of the year, so we won't have that competing for our attention. I was thinking that maybe for the first half of next year we could do some mini-challenges instead.
For example, read 3 (or more) books, each from a different country but all published in the same year. Any others people have in mind?

That "year published" idea could even be better as a group read: I pick a random year, we all nominate books published in that year, vote on them, read one, put up a shelf full of nominated books just for that year. We build up a nice collection of group bookshelves based on time periods etc etc.

What other things might be fun to try?

I'm fond of anything that pushes me to read outside my comfort zone � the treasure hunt worked so well for me because I could read a bunch of my go-to books, but it also pushed me to read quite a few things I wouldn't have wanted to (say, Biography) or wouldn't have got around to (Tom Sawyer). I've even got Thomas Pynchon on the way from the library � I was listening to Knopfler and Taylor singing Sailing to Philadelphia last night, and reading the wikipedia entry, when I saw the title was lifted from Pynchon's Mason & Dixon, which I promptly put on hold for the treasure hunt!

Also, without the group reads, I probably would never have got around to Nabokov (OK, I still have to finish it...)

The "year published" idea could be fun. Again, it would push me to read things I wouldn't get around to, normally.

Love the treasure hunt for the same reasons as Derek. Mini-challanges sound like fun, but not sure how much I'll participate. My 'GR Group on the Side' is doing several reads I want to participate in, so that will be more my reading priority, along with the CR group reads. And getting through the 6 or 7 thousand books on my TBR list. Sigh.

The short reads are great, hope people keep posting those as well.

I definitely wouldn't do one straight off. I might do one later in the year.

LOL. I'm good to go :-) I really just meant I'd be happy to join in a shorter challenge.
