Ive started this thread to organize the rough climb on understanding the basics in Semiotics.

Here are some basic guidelines:

1.- Start with something simple: I recommend Daniel Chandler's "Semiotics For Beginners" It's free online so you can check out if its worth a buy or not. Don't go on and start with someone like Umberto Eco, unless you are headache resistant.

2.- The "What does it mean?" phrase is something you should keep in your mind at all times. It will help you classify in what context, frame, etc. a system is occurring in, and make you realize the direct implication of semiotics in every day life.

3.- Don't stay just in one field: All though Ferdinand de Saussure, is considered the basics in language applied semiotics and structuralism it might be worth while to look up semiotics applied to other fields, Anthropological linguistics, Cybernetics, Neuro-linguistic programming, etc...
