One feature here on goodreads is to Create group challenges. I have never really paid attention to any challenges in other groups so I'm not sure exactly what they are about but with the new year upon us, now would be the time to make one. Any one want too experiment with this feature in 2014? If so, what kind of challenge should we make that would fit this group?

message 2: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments I think that would be awesome! Though I don't know what kind of challenges we could do. I'll think about it and post any ideas.

I don't know how anyone would feel about this, but how about a classic horror/thriller challenge. I haven't read many classic books this year so I'm determined to read some H.P Lovecraft, M.R. James, Algernon Blackwood, etc.

The upside is that most of the books for classics are public domain and available for free.

message 4: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments That's a great idea! I have all of those mentioned above and would love to get into classic horror.

I would like to read some more classic horror but I don't know if I would want to read that much of it to do a challenge just for it. Maybe though.

message 6: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments Were a small group. What if everyone picks one book that is a "sleeper" horror great (ie something you don't think many others have read).

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
Justin, even if the challenge was just 10 classic books, seeing as how a few of them are fairly short that would be achievable and wouldn't take up too much time for other reads.

You could also set up a few challenges for the group like HA and just let people pick which challenges they want to start and how many books they have to get through for their challenge. We would just need to make some lists around the challenge we want to set, e.g. HA made a list for Best Horror and then set up a challenge on their home page and you just set your own goal.

Andrew, I like that idea as well.

I love this idea, I would definitely do this.

How about an a-Z horror challenge where you have to read a novel who's title starts with each letter of the alphabet. We wouldn't even have to read the same books to complete the challenge but could have a thread set up to discuss what we where reading for each letter. Some books could probably count towards multiple challenges as well.

Yea we can do more than one challenge, and each member can decide how many of them they want to participate in.

I like it, that's a good one.

message 12: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments A-Z would work for me. A lot of the books we are reading just for fun would all count and then things would get really interesting after 20 books or so.

message 13: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments That works for me.

Ok, looks like we only have three ideas, we can easily make three challenges. In order to get them going by January first we are going to need to figure out what books are in them. The A-Z is all set because you don't need to have any certain books so I will set that up first. I will make a thread for everyone to submit their favorite sleeper horror next and get that going. How should we do the classic one? Just say ten classics and like the A-Z it don't matter what they are or should we all nominate a list and then each person can choose how many they want to read for their personal goal?

That sound great, Justin!

Another idea for the classics would be to combine it with something else and say for example that one goal is ten classics, one goal is ten bestsellers, one goal is ten buddy reads, one goal it's ten debut novels etc.... and we can add however many goals to the challenge as we want. It seems like a lot of books but if you buddy read a classic that was a best seller you can check one off towards all three of those goals. We could even add one of the goals as ten books from the sleeper list that Andrew suggested. That way we could have a bunch of challenges rolled into one. There is no way to incorporate the A-Z challenge into it though.

I was actually going to do a whole load of personal challenges next year anyway so doing them with the group would hopefully keep me a bit more motivated. Plus, it would be great to see what everyone else is doing for their challenges.

Kate wrote: "That sound great, Justin!"

Which one? I'm kind of leaning towards everyone makes a suggestion into the list and sets their own goal but I wanted to throw some ideas out.

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
I think getting some suggestions and making a list that people could pick from and set their goal would be good. Either that or google horror book lists and see what comes up then use that list for everyone to pick from.

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
How about this list

/shelf/show/...

message 21: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
That's a great list. Plenty to choose from.

message 22: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
Ok, I guess we are all set for everything except the favorite sleeper horror challenge. I will make a thread for everyone to add their suggestion and send a broadcast message out so everyone sees it. Then I will set all three challenges up the last weekend of this month. I will also create a challenges folder with threads to discuss all three challenges.

message 23: by Andy (new)

Andy (manicsloth) | 787 comments I am salivating over the classic horror list already and can't wait to hear what everyone's sleeper picks are. I have a few in particular that I'd like others to read.

This is gonna be so much fun.

I'm in for classic horror, too, but I'm not sure how many.

I was having a look around GR for challenges for 2014 and came across one called the TBR Randomiser Challenge.
Go to this page , put in how many books you want to read off your tbr over the year and also how many books you have on your tbr e.g 1 and 900. Get numbers and these will correspond with books on your 'to read' list, these are the books you will read for the challenge.

What does everyone think?

message 26: by Addy (new)

Addy | 1944 comments I like that one Kate. I have something like that on my kindle where I place books from my tbr list into a collection but this sounds cool.

message 27: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
So should we create a list of books all at once, or one at a time as we go?

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
What they did in the other group was everyone posted their number and the corresponding random reads. People could then just update how they were going in their original post.

message 29: by Robert Krone (last edited Dec 30, 2013 02:16AM) (new)

Robert Krone | 157 comments I think I am going to challenge myself to read a few different genres this year. I need to read some Science Fiction, True Crime, Mystery, Horror/Thriller, and definitely more defined ones too, such as technical thriller, which I highly enjoyed when I read The Genesis Code, which is loanable for anyone who wants to check it out.

Oh, and one genre I have no interest in is romance, lol. Not into those kind of movies except for a couple, so I assume I won't be into the books. I have wayyyy to big of a TBR list anyway to add those to it as well, lol.

message 30: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
I am doing the same, I started venturing out of horror last year and discovered that I actually really enjoy some romance. I like ya or young adult romance better though. This year I want to try to read at least one book from any genre I can think of, I thought about suggesting it for a challenge and suggesting that we all brainstorm as big of a list of genres as we can and make a challenge for it.

message 31: by Justin (new)

Justin (justineaton) | 3492 comments Mod
all three challenges are open to except the challenge and put in your goals right now.

Wish I could have found something better for the classic horror, I found a cool picture of classic monsters but it had movie monsters in it and not all of them where from movies based on books.

message 36: by Kate (new)

Kate | 1106 comments Mod
I found a couple of nice Lovecraft monster pics if you want to try that?

Sounds good Kate, if you want just pick out the best one and change it.

message 39: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis Hi,
I had to read it over a couple times but I like the TBR challenge. I just put my TBR books into a list on here and I am going to attempt to join the challenge. It isn't too late is it? I am going to pick a smaller number since the year is half over!
Vicki

It's not too late Vicki. Look forward to seeing your lists.
