A Team | 5 comments Hi there,

My thread featuring a spot poll has been deleted only in this group. Compared to the other two groups, it was running very well in this particular group. Not asking for an undeletion in case there is a "problem".

Thanks.

Penelope Flynn | 32 comments I ran a post regarding reviews a while back and it was deleted. I was informed (after asking) that this was not the proper forum for my request. Have you tried the "Making Connections" forum? I admit that I was rather off-put by the fact that there was no prohibition against the type of post I created and yet mine was deleted without so much as a courtesy explanation. But again, what I was ultimately informed was that this is a forum for books and readers and that the type of communication that I was proposing to submit was not appropriate to the discussion. I hope this helps.

Thank you, I hope that it is just a bureaucratic glitch as you put it. A pity since it was doing well in terms of response only in this particular group. The same thread in 2 other groups is stagnating.

We delete all posts that are not about either science fiction or fantasy books, this is a book club, not a general forum for discussions about science fiction or fantasy topics. We also delete any topics including self promotion about books written by the poster that aren't posted in the correct folder.

Kim | 1499 comments Due to past issues we are a zero tolerance group. Your thread was not in the appropriate area, it was self promotion, and it was your first and only thread in this group. As such it was considered and treated like spam, and removed. There are appropriate sections of this group to discuss non-book related topics but think about how your posts come across before adding them.

Ben Rowe (benwickens) Its good to have moderators who are sharp at dealing with spam. Strange that anyone should feel entitled to do so. As other moderators are less sharp I looked at one of his other threads and so it was just blatant spam and alerted GR to this and the post was removed within an hour.

At least I suppose it makes a change from self published author spam.

I understand your need for being zero tolerant in order to avoid dealing with the barrage of off-topic threads that any popular group attracts and I respect that. Though I am not affiliated in any way with the links that I posted here, I realize now how it looks. ( My original intent is to get an important social message out there and since I was lacking the time, energy and resources to figure out a zero offensive way to do this, I took a chance by posting it in a few high visibility groups here. )

I can explain the poll ... some of the features - like being able to embed stuff - is a bit fascinating for first timers ( I am sure you understand this ). Thus the poll is not an academic or commercial exercise for earning credits/ commissions - so it doesn't matter much if people do not participate. Hope this clears the air and I sincerely apologize to you and all concerned for this disruption. Thank you very much for taking the time out to reply.

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 115 comments I haven't taken a look but I mod another group on here and I have to delete "spam" all the time. Sometimes they even spam me directly in my box or on my page. I'm not saying this is what you are doing A, as I didnt read your post .

I understand why they may have felt it needed to be deleted though I also have a no tolerance for promotions outside of the promotions folder. I had people posting everywhere just to get the attention of readers. What they end up doing is the opposite because I will never read their book.

Example, I sent out a mass email to all members of a group reminding them of what we would be reading and when. I received back something from a guy it had nothing in it but a link to his book on amazon. I wrote him back and told him how rude he was that if he wanted me to read his book then he needed to ask nicely not to spam my email. I will NEVER read one of his books because his attitude just made me feel annoyed. Needless to say he also commented on a book I was reading on my page and left the same link so now he is blocked. Prob wont stop him from doing it but the way he is going about it also wont get him any readers.

I had a poll for Fantasy book of the month one guy comments that oooh I wish i could nominate my book I need the boost and posts a link to his STEAMPUNK book NOT EVEN FANTASY STEAAMPUNK. He is obviously a spammer and I will also never read his book.

I say all this to say that those people ruin it for the masses its sad but true because the only way to discourage them from doing it is to impose strict "laws" on all. Sorry that your post got deleted if it was genuine.

I understand the problem with self pub author promotions on GR. When pressed for time, mods would shoot first and ask questions later. My thread did not contain promos for books or commercial self promos of any kind since even the link to the Sirius Disclosure documentary is and will always be free ( it's on YouTube ). The contentious issue here is use of high visibility spaces. And no matter how important I feel it is to invade a high visibility space with an important social message, I have to agree that one has to be zero tolerant about it and use the appropriate folder. But as I am pressed for time, I will have to dig for the appropriate folder some other day. ( I have seen quite a few complaints that some people still find GR a bit difficult to work through and as a newbie, I can't help agreeing with that. More user friendly icons and less wading through pages of rules may take care of the problem ...)
