It is that time again! Our Broken Empire Series is on the last book, and the Codex Alera has two more books-so time to pick some new ones!

Also, what does everyone think of doing two series at once??? We started that when we had an almost even split between the grittier Malazan series, and the lighter Riftwar Saga, so it made sense at the time. Do we still want to have two reads going? Better to just do one? Wait and see where people are voting? Let us know you thoughts!

Nominations must be for a finished or soon to be finished series that has not been previously read. All nominations muct be seconded. The books must be available in different formats.
Each member is allowed one nomination and one second...so no lists of nominations!

Happy Nominating!

Nominated and seconded so far:
The Gunslinger-Dark Tower series
Feast of Souls-Magister Trilogy
The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms-Inheritance Trilogy
A Shadow in Summer-Long Price Quartet
The Sum of All Men-Runelords
The Spirit Lens-Collegia Magic
Jhereg-Vlad Taltos
Goblin Quest-Jig the goblin
The Summer Tree-Fionavar
The Darkness That Comes Before-Prince of Nothing
Fortress in the Eye of Time-Fortress
Dawnthief-Chronicles of the raven
Shapechangers-Chronicles of the Cheysuli

Nominated and needing a second:

Hand of Fire-master of the tane

The Blacksmith's Son-Mageborn
Undead and Unwed-Undead
Lord of the Silver Bow-Troy

Lannister (lannisteruk) Is there a list anywhere of the books you've done before. I only joined the group recently and I don't want to suggest something that you've done already.

On the home page, tap on bookshelf; upper right of page.
You might also look at previous nominations that didn't win.

I wouldn't mind going to one read, but on the other hand it does give choices to the members.
It is difficult to read two whole series at once (for me). Especially since I usually have another going anyway.
LOL

message 7: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) I would probably find two books a month difficult to keep up with, as I'm a mod in another group and feel obligated to read their BOM too. I only manage about a book a week, so this would represent three out of my four(ish) books.

Having said that, some people may not like the series that wins the vote, but would prefer the second choice. Perhaps if the vote is fairly evenly split, you could try two, but if there's a clear winner, go for one?

Just my thoughts, though I'm only a new member, so take them or leave them. :)

Onto nominations. I'd like to suggest the Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham. It's a four book series, though you can buy combined editions for Books 1/2 and 3/4.

This is the link to the page for the series:

/series/4340...

And this is the first book: A Shadow in Summer (Long Price Quartet, #1) by Daniel Abraham A Shadow in Summer

Helen | 1 comments Lannister, you had a festive hat earlier, have you stopped celebrating?

I think two series are good as that way there is usually one you like or haven't read.

message 9: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) Helen, yup, looks like my festive cheer's gone till next December. ;)

message 10: by shaymond (last edited Jan 04, 2014 09:44AM) (new)

shaymond I would love to read and hear every ones thoughts and opinions on a series by David Farland.

THE RUNELORDS

There are nine books total. The first four make up the Earth King Series and the last five make up the Scions of the Earth Series. The unique magic system in this book creates some questions in regards to morality. A great series for a discussion thread!

/series/4132...

I almost forgot: My vote is having two series at once. I like having a choice of which series to read.

message 11: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 61 comments I like having two series. Gives everyone twice the chance of being interested in the group read, plus lets us get to more series faster.

I'd like to nominate C. S. Friedman's Magister Trilogy. It's a dark fantasy series where the magic source is people's life energy. It's complete and available in a variety of formats.

message 12: by Helen (new)

Helen | 1 comments The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, this series is on my must read this year list. You could all join me.

message 13: by Andreas (new)

Andreas I don't mind if the novels in the series are shorter - Jum Butcher's 700 page volumes are simply too much to follow every month even if they were good enough.

Zelazny's Amber series or Cook's Black Company were short enough. I just wasn't able to keep up because we read two of each every month. Just too much.

In general, I'd invest in some 500 paged novel for a series read every month. And I think having two series running in parallel is quite fine because it is highly probable that I won't read one of them at all.

Errr...sorry....that might have been me. When I led the Zelazny books, I asked for objections to reading two a month.

For myself, I'd like to nominate Stephen King's Dark Tower Series. I haven't had the chance to read any of his work yet, and I'm curious. The first book is The Gunslinger.

message 20: by Antonis (new)

Antonis (antonakis) | 27 comments There are already some excellent and amazing nominations so I'm not sure if I should even try to nominate something else myself. Just a quick question though, for how long are the nominations going to be open?

message 21: by Richie (last edited Jan 02, 2014 06:57PM) (new)

Richie | 2 comments I would like to recommend The Book of One series by Jordan Baker. There are currently 4 books. The first book is called A New Age. The Book of One: A New Age Jordan Baker. The second series I would like to recommend is The Sovereign of the Seven Isles by David A. Wells. First book is called Thinblade and there are currently six books. David A. Wells Thinblade

message 22: by Jeff (last edited Jan 03, 2014 07:41AM) (new)

Jeff Gruters | 14 comments Ill nominate The Riyria Chronicles. A two book series prequel to The Riyria Revelations by Michael J Sullivan that was already read by us. The Crown Tower is the first of the two books.

Dang we are getting some good nominations! I had a series in mind I was going to nominate but someone else already did it!
I think I will nominate a Carol Berg series-I truly have loved every book of hers that I have read.....so I will nominate the Collegia MAgic series, starting with The Spirit Lens

Thanks to everyone who has nominated so far..its good to see some excitement going!

I will leave nominations up until we have at least ten series to vote between.....

Richie | 2 comments Maggie wrote: "Richie-read the rules! Only one nomination per person!"

I am truly sorry about that. I also missed the part about the complete series or close to complete, and from what I can tell neither of those series are, so I would like to retract those nominations and nominate Master of the Tane by Thomas Rath. The first book is Hand of Fire. I would like to second the Runelord Series by David Farland.

message 26: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 61 comments Maggie wrote: "I think I will nominate a Carol Berg series-I truly have loved every book of hers that I have read.....so I will nominate the Collegia MAgic series, starting with The Spirit Lens"

I'll second this. Been meaning to get to her books for awhile. There are some great nominations!

message 27: by Ben (new)

Ben (bstanley52) | 39 comments How about a short, fun/funny, trilogy? I nominate the Jig the Goblin series by Jim C. Hines. The first book is Goblin Quest. I just read/consumed the first two books of his Libriomancer series last year and can't wait to get to the Goblin books!

message 28: by Bill (new)

Bill I would like to nominate the Chronicle of the Raven series by James Barclay. It starts with Dawnthief.

I loved the first one, but the second has not even been released yet. Right now Amazon has a release date of May 6, 2014.

¹óé°ù¾±²¹±ô I don't know if you guys have heard of The Mageborn series. 4 books so far. The fifth will be published in a week or so. The series starts with The Blacksmith's Son

It's a series I found by chance while I was wandering on the net. And, oh, it was such a pleasant surprise !

message 32: by Sirius (new)

Sirius Seyven (siriuss7) | 2 comments I will nominate The Fionavar Tapestry, by Guy Gavriel Kay. This series starts with The Summer Tree I find that his books do not get much recognition, but they are very good. And I second Chronicles of the Cheysuli.

message 33: by Pam (new)

Pam I nominate The Undead series (Queen Betsy) by Maryjanice Davidson. Those books are hilarious!! It's about a woman the accidentally becomes queen of the vampires. They are very good!

I was going to nominate this as well :D...I love Kay. (so can I have a second second in place of a nomination?)

message 35: by Gregor (last edited Jan 07, 2014 05:06PM) (new)

Gregor | 2 comments I have a nomination: One of the best fantasy series I have read so far! But be careful I am not too much into the standard fantasy stuff anymore. Not sure how common that is around here ;)

Steven Brust: Vlad Taltos

Currently 13, rather thin, books (I have read the first 10 so far and am going to read the next 3 this year)
AFAIK #14 is being written atm, but I have no clue how many more (if any) are planned

It's a fun fantasy series, a bit ironic, not taking itself too serious.

First book: /book/show/1...

Kathi | 1274 comments Mod
I will second the Vlad Taltos series.

message 37: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) I have always wanted to read the Vlad series, but I am not sure how easy it is to find the books. I don't think they are all out on kindle. The libraries I have checked here don't stock it and neither do the major book shops.

message 38: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) I am going to nominate a series I'd love to read as a group as I have been putting it off as a solo read.

The Prince of Nothing Series by R. Scott Bakker.

Three books in the series and apparently a very deep read. Thus, being able to discuss as we go is my idea of how to read it :)

message 39: by Lucinda (new)

Lucinda | 38 comments Gregor wrote: "I have a nomination: One of the best fantasy series I have read so far! ...

This is on my short list of best fantasy series of all-time. Yeah, it's that good.

Brust has said that there will be at least 17 books in the series- one for each of the great houses in the cycle. 13 are written...the 14th (Hawk) is due out in late 2014 (per the author's webpage).

The rights to the first 7 books are held by ACE. They are available in 3 (paperback)omnibus editions both online and in B&N stores.

TOR publishes books 8+. All of the TOR books are available in ebook format as well as print. (TOR also has paperback omnibus editions of 8/9 and 10/11.)

I hope you don't mind if I mention another group here :)

The Fionavar Tapestry is being read starting on Jan 15 in the group Beyond Reality. I'll definitely participate because I started the idea, there.
So, if the series doesn't make it here as a group read, you're welcomed joining the discussion there :)

Ysabel was recently read there and that lead to the series read...

message 41: by Gregor (new)

Gregor | 2 comments About Vlad Taltos again:

The books are not terribly expensive (because thin and old mostly), but you can also buy most of them (I just checked the first two) very cheap as used ones from amazon ($0.01+shipping) and probably ebay as well or wherever else you buy second-hand-books...

Btw there also exist 1 or 2 side stories (depend on how you count) of other characters for further/future reading:
The Khaavren Romances (5 books), which includes the trilogy: The Viscount of Adrilankha

This is on my TBR pile so I second the nomination for the Prince of Nothing series.

message 43: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I will second GGK's The Fionavar Tapestry The Summer Tree The Wandering Fire The Darkest Road

message 44: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) I would like to nominate the Fortress series by C.J. Cherryh. There are five books in the series starting with Fortress in the Eye of Time.

I've read the first of those and wouldn't mind reading the others. I've heard that his Stepsister books are very fun - Disney princesses as Charlie's Angels-type badasses. In any case, I'll second the Jig the Goblin series. I've been looking for an excuse to read the rest of the trilogy.

As far as the one vs. two reads thing goes, I'll admit I've enjoyed having the choice. I don't try to read both because one will inevitably interest me more than the other, but it makes it more likely that I'll be excited by the prospect of reading one of them.

message 46: by Janny (new)

Janny (jannywurts) | 414 comments I will enthusiastically second the Fortress series by C. J. Cherryh. This is a tremendously well done set of books, all too little acknowledged around here. The magic is totally brilliant, the characters are expertly drawn, all with believable motivations. The series develops as it goes, and it plays off of themes that are not common in the genre. And Tristan, the main character, is without parallel anywhere. I highly recommend this series, whether it wins a following here or not.

message 47: by Colin (new)

Colin | 5 comments I second prince of nothing...and as a newish member has David Gemmells Troy trilogy been covered by the group? if not I nominate it..thanks

message 48: by Maggie, The Malazan Queen of Chaos (new)

Maggie K | 1208 comments Mod
ok-I have it updated up to here, so if I missed anything-let me know!

Goede-I did disqualify your choice, as not enough of the books are out yet

I will give it through tonight to see if there are more seconds or any corrections, but it looks like we have enough entries to be getting on with!

´³¾±Å™Ã (jirifilip) | 4 comments I second Dawnthief

message 50: by Arcturus (new)

Arcturus | 1 comments I nominate the Earthsea Cycle. There are five novels and a book of short stories, beginning with A Wizard of Earthsea. This is a great concise series with few better out there.
