Deb | 8 comments A young girl and her nanny are abducted from an upscale city street by men in a van. A gunshot is heard and blood is seen on the van windows. The only witness cannot provide much info. The nanny is later found dead. Detective work ensues.

At one point, the detectives believe they have found the missing girl because she matches the description and is also wearing red shoes. I think the missing girl's name may have been Maddie.

This kidnapping appears to be linked to other missing child prodigies. All the children came from families who had nannies or au pairs to mind the children. One family has pretended for years that their missing child (a son) is living with relatives in England because the kidnappers threatened to kill him if they involved the police.

In the current case, no contact from the kidnappers has led police in different directions, but they then discover that the message from the kidnappers went to the home of a neighbor who was away.

The style is much like James Patterson, but I can't find a title there that rings a bell.

How many years ago did you read this book? Was it part of a series? Were the detectives amateur sleuths or were they police?

Something by Mary Higgins Clark perhaps?

The detectives were police, and may have been a man and woman team. I read the book in the past 18 months, but my reading history was lost. Thanks!

KimeyDiann | 37 comments This sounds so very familiar.... but it seems more like something I saw on TV instead of read. Could this have been something that was made into a movie? Perhaps a made-for-tv movie, not something I think was in theaters... at least not recently.

The 6th Target by James Patterson?

Excerpt from Amazon: "Lindsay Boxer and her new partner in the San Francisco police department run flat-out to stop a series of kidnappings that has electrified the city: children are being plucked off the streets together with their nannies--but the kidnappers aren't demanding ransom."

One Amazon reviewer says: "Meanwhile, little geniuses are disappearing and their nannies are being murdered. No ransom notes are delivered and no other demands are made except those of mysterious phone calls instructing the parents never to try to find their children again. A series of five-year-old prodigies in music and mathematics are abducted..."
