Heather recommended me Acqua agli elefanti by Heather
2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
No, I had not even heard of it before this
3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
Nothing
4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
I liked it quite, especially the jumping up and down time. I have to admit though that, not loving particularly much the circus world, I’ve not enjoyed it as some others I’ve read
5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Yes; it is nice and well written; if you love circuses even better!
6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Yes!!! I’ve become an addict!!!!

message 254: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

Alannah recommended Moriarty to me.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

Yes, eventually - I picked up a hardback copy cheaply from a charity shop a few months ago, so it was on my "to read" list.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

I have read one of his short stories, and thought it was really good. My husband has read his other Sherlock Holmes story, The House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel and said it was very good.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I really liked it. I've not read any of Conan Doyle's books (but have seen tv adaptations) but I enjoyed the writing style and was completely hooked by the story.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes I would.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Yes, definitely! I haven't been disappointed yet!

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

Shirley recommended Tell the Wolves I'm Home to me.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

No. I had never heard of it before.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No. She was new to me.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

The story was really beautiful and touching. The main character though, June, was really annoying. Finn and Toby on the other hand were great. The mom... I don't remember her name, had a very interesting story that I wish had been told.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes I would. I think it does a ver good job at portraying the difficulties of siblings relationships.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Sure!

message 256: by [deleted user] (new)

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you? Killing Floor by Lee Child. Recommended by my lovely namesake, Heather!

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily? I might have done as I do enjoy crime/thriller but it wasn't yet on my radar

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read? No I haven't

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended? I enjoyed it. The book was a real page turner. It wasn't classic literature but it was fast moving and kept me interested throughout. It was just what I needed at the time

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else? I would, if they liked the genre. It was a bit graphically violent at times so I wouldn't recommend it to everybody

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future? Of course, as always!

About two-thirds of the way through this I really, really wanted to be done with it. But I persevered.

H (hiisdaarkmaaterials) Such a great idea this recommend a book thing and so interesting to see people's views on things they most likely would never have looked twice at ordinarily!

Heather | 571 comments November recommendation swap

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
Shirley recommended The Children Act by Ian McEwan (she always recommends great books!)

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
I probably wouldn't have! I had read Atonement previously and loved it but for some reason I hadn't read any other McEwan books - I have no idea why and while perusing the book shops I always skipped over his books, so I don't think I would have ever picked this up.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
Yes - Atonement which I did love.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
It was amazing. Even during a busy week I found every opportunity I could to read it, I even downloaded Kindle to my phone so I could read it during any downtime I got at work!

This book gripped my from page one, it felt like I was having a real insight into the main characters - Fiona's life - the problems in her marriage, the emotional complexities of the decisions she makes in the court room were enthralling!

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else? I already have... I have just spent the weekend away with 4 of my closest friends and I couldn't stop talking about this book. I know I'm a bore at times - but at least one of them has already downloaded it to read!

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Would my answer be anything but YES! Thanks as always Shirley for organising this

Shirley | 4177 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

I was recommended The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker. Heather (moderator) very kindly recommended it to me.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

Yes - I had already downloaded it onto my kindle, but hadn't got around to reading it yet...like so many others, ha ha!

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No I haven't.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I really enjoyed it - it was a long book and the story took a while to get going, but it was quite gripping towards the end, and I found I could engage with the characters. I do like a good storyline and this one didn't disappoint.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes I would.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Of course!

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

I was recommended The Hunter by John

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

No. I've to admit I hadn't even heard of it. THat's why I was really glad of the suggestion: I'm always interested in books or author I've never met before

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No I haven't.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

Liked it, especially for the ability of the author in keepin the attention. It was though a bit ... too much. THe main character looked to much like a Rambo to me: he could kill half of the mob crew without being hurt a bit. Unbelievable!

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes I would. But to thouse who like mystery and action books.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

For sure!

message 263: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 03, 2015 02:11PM) (new)

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

The Girl on the Train recommended by Dom

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

I had the audiobook downloaded but this pushed me to listen to it

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?

No I haven't.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I thought it was really good! The mystery kept me intrigued and I thought the audiobook narration was amazing and really kept the story going. I found the book quite claustrophobic at times and very tense

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Yes I would and I have done!

. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Yes, have read some amazing books because of it

message 264: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Heather, I liked your description 'claustrophobic'; such an apt word for how the reader feels. I almost felt trapped in the story. It was really tense, I nearly found myself holding my breath at times.

message 265: by [deleted user] (new)

That is exactly how I felt. I listened in the car and sometimes had to turn it off and listen to music for a bit to avoid getting too caught up. I really want to shout at Rachel

Absolutely agree Heather!

message 267: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments 1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
Heather (bookcase avatar) recommended a few books to me & I selected The Magicians' Guild by Trudi Canavan

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
Unlikely -- it is the type of book I like but I was completely unaware of it!

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
Nope - never heard of her before.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
I liked it. It was a solid YA fantasy but there was a little lack of depth to make it a really good book appealing to all ages. 3.5

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Depends on the person -- if they were fans of fantasy and/or YA, then yes.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
Of course!

I read The Good Girl, a thriller recommended to me by Alannah. I do read a certain number of thrillers each year, but I'm not sure I would have found this one without Alannah. It was very good, a real page-turner. I liked it very much. It's the first work I've read by this author. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone interested in this genre.

Thanks, Alannah! I enjoyed this very much, and definitely will take part in another swap in the future.

(Sorry for the delay in posting; I had to wait for the book from my library, and then I had some health issues.)

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?
Terri recommended me The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?
Probably yes, I had it somewhere in the background of my TBR list. But who knows when!

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No, this was my first Walls!

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
Great book. I had no idea of what I was going to find: at the beginning I thought it was a novel. I'm still appalled after having discovered how these kids were risen by their parents. But I have to admit that sometimes things can go well even if done in a way that I sincerelly find incredible. I was astounded that no state intervention was really operated in such a situation, even if I have to admit state interventions usually are for the worst!

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
Definitly

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?
I will

1. Which book were you recommended and who recommended it to you?

I read The Guest Room, which was recommended to me by Dom.

2. Would you have read the book ordinarily?

It was on my TBR list, so I probably would have gotten to it eventually. I had always wanted to read something by this author, so I was quite pleased with Dom's recommendation.

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No.

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?

I gave it one star, which is quite unusual. I had a very negative personal reaction; I didn't like what was happening to the characters and I just wanted it to stop. It was too emotionally intense for me, and not in a good way.

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

Actually, I would, depending on their taste in reading. For some people this would be a compelling thriller and family drama.

6. Would you take part in another recommendation swap in the future?

Absolutely yes!

All the Light We Cannot See by Heather

Yes, sooner or later; it was on my TBR shelf

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read?
No; never heard of it before

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
I liked it. I've not fallen in love with it though: I don't know, I gave it four stars, but it was more three and a half. It is a nice book, even if you sort of know beforehand how it will finish. The good, the bad, those who will learn "on their skin" ...

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read? No

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended? I couldn't put it down, I was mesmerized by Esther's decent into mental illness, her over analysis of everything and everyone around her and her feelings of being caged in. It was a beautifully written and clearly personal book to Plath

5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?

3. Have you read anything by the same author before if so what have you read? No

4. What did you think of the book you were recommended?
"Lovely little book. Perfect to listen to for a short round trip.

I was worried at the beginning when the author had the queen talking about eating every bite on your plate when she is known to just take a bite from each course. But then I suspended disbelief and enjoyed the book. Not sure about the ending.

What do we miss out on by making the choices we make in life?

I book that was mentioned in another book and mentions more books. My to-read list will never shrink.
5. Would you recommend this book to someone else?
