Spreadsheets

- Once all columns of a goal have been filled out a new goal will appear within 5 minutes.

- Do not change existing pages. You may add a new page to your spreadsheet if you want to track additional information.

- Mark books as used in your books list once they are used for a goal.

- Only books read during the current round may be applied towards goals, once the round has ended those books may no longer be used for a goal.

- Once you merge teams, you may use your books for your partner teams goals. List them in your books list and on their goals sheet. Mark them as used.

- If you end up with more than 3 open goals, contact a moderator for help.

SandyL | 4728 comments I'm going to reserve a few posts near the top in case we need them. Also, can you all post a link to your gladiator shelf? I'll be sending you friend requests. So excited to get started, although I'm not real sure on how all this works - hopefully Skandia has a clue! :-)

Recap of the rules:
â— Starts on August 2, 2015 and runs for 8 weeks
â— Each round will last 2 weeks
â— At the end of each round the gladiator team with the highest score and lowest score will be teamed up for the following round.
â— Books must be more than 160 pages in length. Children's books, Graphic Novels, Cookbooks and Poetry books cannot be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 160 pages
Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked from previous weeks to use later in the challenge
â— Books must be started after the start date of the challenge to count towards the challenge

Challenge Rules
â— The battles take place between each team at the end of the round.
â— A gladiator may gain an advantage through two methods: attack and defense.
â— Attack points are awarded for reading books. (Half a point of attack for books under 500 pages and 1 point of attack for books 500+ pages)
â— Defense points are awarded for completing goals. (1 point of defense per goal)
â— If a teams defense is higher than the attacker's attack power, the hit from the attacker will be 0.
â— Books read towards defense goals also count towards attack points.
â— There will be 3 defense goals active for each gladiator, when one is submitted on the spreadsheet, another will be automatically generated a short time after.
â— Any book read during the current round may be used to complete goals.
â— Books read in a previous round may not be used on new goals.
â— Attack and defense points carry on into the next round and are added to your gladiator teams total point value.
â— Ties in battle will result in both sides receiving a victory point.

The master spreadsheet and team spreadsheet has been added to the beginning of your team thread.

Captains and co-captains should message the moderator account with their team name and google doc e-mail to be added to the approved editors of the team spreadsheet.

Amy (amymia) | 461 comments Yay the goals are up! I'm going to read The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes , which fulfills the 3rd goal (read a book with a man on the cover).

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3723 comments Hi team!! I'm excited to start!

I'm on my phone right now so it won't let me add a shelf but I will Monday and it'll be called GG2015

message 20: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Hi team, completely missed this yesterday!!

I'll come back with shelf, after I've read over the rules again in a few minutes :D

SO EXCITED!!

message 21: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments Hi fellow Callistos! How about we all get to know each other?

I'm Sandy and I'm from southern CA. I'm divorced, no kids but my dogs are like my kids! I read erotica, some PNR and romance and usually read 4-5 books a week (although I have to teach some classes this month, so not sure if I'll keep up with that in August.) I love doing reading challenges!

message 22: by Logan (new)

Logan (loganturner) | 1619 comments Hi friends! I'm Logan and I live in Chicago with my husband and our dog. I usually read 2-3 books a week, but this summer has been so busy that it has really slowed me down. I like to read a little of everything - PNR/UF, fantasy, YA, thrillers.

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Hi :D

I'm from New Mexico, married with cats and dogs :D

My favorite genres are m/m romance, fantasy, and PNR...

I read about 4+ books per week

My favorite books this past month were the Jasper Dent series

I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent, #1) by Barry Lyga Game (Jasper Dent, #2) by Barry Lyga Blood of My Blood (Jasper Dent, #3) by Barry Lyga

message 25: by Snowtulip (last edited Aug 01, 2015 09:00AM) (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I have a blue cover book Healing Hunter's Heart (A Little Bite of Love, #2) by Charlie Cochet or The King's Last Song by Geoff Ryman

I also have an O character Brokenhearted (Hope Cove, #1) by Cate Ashwood

Not sure if we are just going to read whatever we have or divvy up the goals?

message 26: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (phoenix4) | 24 comments I live in the DC area. I have kittens and a roommate who like to bother me when I read. I read in bursts but I usually average about a book a week. I read most genres depending on my mood and am also trying to work my way through some classics. I'm trying to finish The Stand this weekend, so next weekend I'll be happy to get to some shorter stuff.

I have a blue cover book that I'm planning to read first also The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

message 27: by Amy (new)

Amy (amymia) | 461 comments Hi again :D I live on the US East Coast. I usually read from 1 to 2 books a week (more if the books are short/easy). My favorite genres are mystery, literary fiction, Regency romance, and some YA.

I'm also wondering what would be the best way to divide up the goals among us. In any case, I believe I can finish the 3rd goal pretty quickly since my book is fairly short (163 pages). Hope to hear more inputs from our captains :)

message 28: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Hi everyone!
I'm finally here :)
I see I'm a co-captain with Sandy. It's a bit of surprise for me but no worries, I'll do my best and I'm sure together with Sandy we will make it work!

I'm going to dig into rules very quickly and set up a shelf.

message 29: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments This is what we came up with Sandy for simplified rules -

All books we read after challenge starts are good for attack points (if more than 160 pages but under 500 - o,5 points and over 500 pages 1 point).

Defense - there are specific tasks (always three open at the same time) that will earn us defense points. These are the books that require planning.
Since there are three goals at a time and 6 team members, several of us can try to pick a same goal to read towards, but first finished counts. The other books read the same task in mind will still count for attack points, so no one reads a task book for nothing.

I hope it makes the rules a little clearer but ask away, if something is still unclear!

message 30: by Skandia (last edited Aug 01, 2015 11:00AM) (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Important for getting all our points counted -

please make a new post here in our team thread when finishing a book adding read date, number of pages and if the book is read for defence task - the task also.

Don't forget to tag read books on your Gladiators shelf also!

message 31: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments Hi girlz!!

OK - all of our shelves are linked next to our names in message 1 (except RebeccaS, who will be setting hers up on Monday.)

Did you know that we can start reading as soon as the countdown clock reaches 0? Here is the link:

So less than 4 hours to start!!

Skandia mentioned above that we're not going to assign goals since we all read at different paces and we want to get through as many as possible. Don't worry if you are reading towards the same goal as someone else - your hard work still counts!! As Skandia says above, we get credit for all books read (as long as they are over 160 pages). And once a goal is completed, we'll get a new one that may work for the book you are currently reading. So keep an eye on the goals and your captains will do this as well.

If you have questions please ask. And if something isn't working please bring it up. We want this to be fun for everyone!! If your question or problem isn't addressed please PM Skandia or me (in case we miss a post). Anything you need - speak up - we are a team and everyone's opinion is important.

To start, I think it will be helpful to post what goal you are going to read towards so we can make sure the goals are covered. I'm sure over time we'll change how we do things as we see what works and what doesn't. And if you see any good ideas in other groups, speak up!

Our first goals are:
Blue Cover
Character's First Name Starts With O
Man on the Cover

Again - don't worry if multiple people want to read the same goal - it will all work out!!

Are all of you able to access the spreadsheet to check on the goals? Would you like us to try to post new goals in this thread?

Sorry to be so wordy - I promise to keep things brief once we get started. Thanks everyone - Skandia and I look forward to the battle with such able gladiatresses at our sides!!!

message 32: by Amy (new)

Amy (amymia) | 461 comments Thanks for the game plan, Skandia and Sandy. Here's my TBR book again:

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes for 3rd goal

message 33: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Thanks Skandia and Sandy, sounds like a good plan :D

message 34: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments I'm going to start out with:

Brokenhearted (Hope Cove, #1) by Cate Ashwood (characters name starts with O)
The King's Last Song by Geoff Ryman (blue cover)

message 35: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments I'm finishing up a book I'd already started, so will check back to see where we are at before starting my next book.

message 36: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments I saw this post in the Ludus thread:

Say we read a book that doesn't fit for a goal at the time it's finished... if a goal gets posted later on that fits that book, we can go back and use that book for that goal, right? But it does have to be in that same round, right? Like, we can't go back and use books we read in round 1, for goals in round 2... but we can use any books we read in round 1 for any goals in round 1, correct?

The answer was yes. So, if a book you read isn't used for a goal, keep an eye out to see if it might meet a new goal that comes out later.

message 37: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments I will also read a book with a man in a cover Midnight's Kiss (Elder Races, #8) by Thea Harrison

message 38: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Finished:

Brokenhearted
Pages: 210/GR
3.5 stars
Goal: Character First Name Starts with O (Oliver)

This was a sweet little romance and good start to a new series.

message 39: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments updated to here

Yay Snowtulip -- our first points!! You rock girl!

message 40: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments OK - here is our next goal:
Read a book where the hardcover version is between 400 and 499 pages

message 41: by Amy (last edited Aug 01, 2015 10:21PM) (new)

Amy (amymia) | 461 comments Finished:

The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes
Read date: 08/02
Page number: 163
Goal: Man on cover

I'm reading Dorothy Must Die next, which can fulfill the next goal (hardcover edition between 400 and 499 pages).

message 42: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Great job ST and Amy!

Speadsheet updated and here is the next goal-

Read a book where a character's first name starts with the letter Y

Tough one ...

message 43: by Amy (new)

Amy (amymia) | 461 comments Change of plan: I'm going to read The Cuckoo's Calling, which (apparently) has a character called Lady Yvette Landry Bristow. If someone else can cover the 400-to-4990-pages goal, that'd be great :)

message 44: by Ariel (new)

Ariel (phoenix4) | 24 comments I'm starting Big Little Lies which will meet hardcover edition between 400 and 499 pages.

message 45: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3723 comments Hi team!! I'm on the East Coast and I'm so excited to start this challenge. I work full time during the week, but usually can listen to audiobooks if it's not too crazy so that's how I do the bulk of my reading. I'm getting married in the beginning of October so a lot of my free times and pretty much all my weekends are busy with details for that, but I promise to get reading done (the mods convinced me that I'll have the time since it's a minimum of 1 book per 2 weeks).

I have a couple books that I have to finish up that I've started before the challenge which sucks because they won't count, but I should get them done by tomorrow.

Today I'm starting The Lowland which doesn't fit any goals right now, but hopefully will in the future!

message 46: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Way to go team!

message 47: by Snowtulip (new)

Snowtulip | 4679 comments Good luck on the wedding planning Rebecca, how exciting!

message 48: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 1724 comments Hi Rebecca and congratulations!
I imagine you must be busy with all the wedding stuff and don't worry if the book you read doesn't fit any goals right now, it still counts for points!

message 49: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) | 3723 comments Thanks!
I can't believe we already have 2 books finished! Woohoo go team!

Also I CANNOT believe it's already August. Where did this year go?!

message 50: by SandyL (new)

SandyL | 4728 comments Whoo Hoo Amy! Team Callisto Rocks!

Congrats on your upcoming wedding Rebecca - hope all your planning is as stress free as possible. :-)

I just finished the book I was reading so can get started on reading for this challenge now. Off to pick a book.
