We have one thread for each book as Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ has made a spoiler tag that you can use to put before anything that is a spoiler. Use your discretion as to what would be a pretty big spoiler and label it. Please put up to what page the spoiler is for.

To create the tag simply do this:

< spoiler> Blah blah blah spoilery stuff < /spoiler>

*Take out the spaces in both of the spoiler tag.

It will look like this:

Sara (saraa205) | 76 comments I read "The Martian" earlier during the spring, so have forgotten some things about it. My clearest memory though was how much I despised the novel during the first 100 pages. Usually, I don't dnf a book before the 100 page mark, so I was struggling to reach it. I didn't like the first person narrative, I didn't like Mark Watney's jokes... and all of that chemistry and physics, argh!

Thankfully NASA came in and rescued the entire novel for me. I enjoyed the third person parts immensely. It brought an air of suspense to the novel, something Watney's narrative couldn't do for me, cause hey, if he's talking it means he's alive, right?

Have you guys seen that the movie is coming out in a couple of weeks? What do you think of the casting? I'm not so sure about some of the actors - aren't the Ares crew a bit... young? I mean Commander Lewis for example, regarding her experience both in the Navy and the Space programs and that she was given the command... couldn't they have gotten an actress in her middle 40's-50's to play her? I may remember incorrectly, but I always read her fondness for 70's music and TV series as nostalgia, as in she was young during the 70's. Jessica Chastain is 38 years old (born -77).
What do you think?

Charlie (charlievcook) I had exactly the same problem as Sara. I really struggled with The Martian at the beginning, I just couldn't stand the style that it was written in.

As I progressed through the book I realised why everyone liked it so much, the plot line is brilliant and could translate perfectly into film with the right Director.

I will go and see the film because it has the potential to be better than the book. The book itself was good but personally I feel it was quite badly written.

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I listened to the audio of this, both me and my husband LOVED it. I'm wondering if the audio was a better format for the story? I thought Watney was hilarious. But the narrator was fantastic.

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments I remember frequently eyeing "The Martian", whenever I frequented a bookstore. I was hesitant to read it as the genre was quite different from what I typically read; however, I was also curious. Luckily, I came upon the book at a thrift store, and I could not resist buying the book.

I eagerly wanted to love the book; however, it felt short of my expectations. times, I felt bored with the technical/scientific descriptions in the book, although they were necessary. The author's strong knowledge of engineering and physics was apparent throughout the book. I did enjoy the story and was curious to see what would happen to Mark Watney. I found Mark Watney's character somewhat one-dimensional.
