Jim Townsend | 174 comments Good evening,

Just wondering about omnibuses (one volume containing two or more full books): Would each individual book in an omnibus count for points, or must we read the entire volume for it to count? Examples: a Book-of-the-Month-Club three-novel, 964-page E.M. Forster volume (A Room With a View; Howards End; Maurice); a Modern Library 846-page omnibus of The Iliad and The Odyssey; and a volume containing three Tony Hillerman mysteries. Thanks.

Jim

Sounds simple enough. I'll sign up if not too late

Where there is a boxed set or 'omnibus' of separate books being sold as one, we use the singular books for the page count. So you can either shelve the single books, or let your captain know so they can do a "page override" in the spreadsheet to change your page numbers.
For an omnibus like Wool Omnibus where it is just the one book, but was previously released in parts ; then you would shelve and use the page numbers for the Omnibus.

I hope that helps!

Not too late at all. Just use this to access the sign up form and Sonia will allocate you to either an existing team, or a new team if we get enough new signups. It may take a few days (but there is still 2 weeks until we start so plenty of time)

Yes each team will have their own set of goals that auto update on your team spreadsheet (to be released soon).
TT ends when the first team reaches 25,000 points.we would expect that to be about 3 months

message 106: by Beth (new)

Beth (jasonverlander) | 1567 comments Sorry if this has been asked already, but I'm too tired to look through every page.

Let's say we read a 300 page book that is also a BOM where we write DQs. When we finish the book, do we get 80 points for that book? (if it doesn't reach a goal, that is)

message 107: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16474 comments Mod
Yes, you can get points for the book page numbers, plus points for writing DQs, plus points for participating in the BOM discussion all for the one book

message 108: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyland) | 387 comments Only one person per team for DQ's but can all members get participation points for all books?

message 109: by ❶İձ❶ (new)

❶İձ❶ (ttea) | 9617 comments Yep. Only DQs have limit per team. All members can read it and get participation points.

Nancy (nancyland) | 387 comments Thanks! :)

message 111: by Diane Woods (new)

Diane Woods | 352 comments I saw that we get points for reading a certain number of pages and also points for a certain goal. My question is: Do those combine? I.E. If I read a 200 page book that completes an open goal, do I put down 25 points? I"m really new to all this and I don't want to miss anything!

message 112: by JoLene (new)

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 705 comments Question --- I started doing a group read of an 800+page book. I got about 80 pages in (2 chapters) and then got distracted by bookclub books and a halloween challenge.

This book is a mystery and I decided that reading it in chunks was probably not going to work for me. Can I go back and re-read those 80 pages after challenge start date so I can use it.

message 113: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16474 comments Mod
Hi Diane - yes you get points for the book read and for completing the goal. The spreadsheets the captains will have are largely automated so provided you post to your team thread when you've read a book and the goal it is for, your captains can update and the s/sheet will work out the points!

Hi Jolene - seeing that it is a bit of an exception and you only read about 10% and intend to start again then I'm ok with that book counting for the challenge

Yes, I'm reading books <100 pages ;)

Alison (Lady Coffin) S | 949 comments I have about 180 pages on the one that I had hoped to finish by midnight. But, halloween and life got in the way.
So, should finish that in the next day or two. Will have to start another before the 7th.

I'm not, but I read pretty quick. I'm not planning to limit my reading during the challenge. If I happen to feel in need of reading a children's picture book or a graphic novel, I will. It won't take me long and I'll likely start a longer book that can count that same day. :-)

Well I never get around to reading them otherwise and I'm not reading a lot at the moment so I decided some plays and novellas were a good idea for this week :)

Jen (reader44ever) | 2930 comments Shandy wrote: "Smart Karen!
And I appreciate the thought on not restricting reading :) so I started my next book. But it's under 300pgs and is a page turner! So I should finish it this week!"

Sounds good! I think the important thing to remember is to read what makes you happy and have fun! So if a shorter book that can't count grabs ahold of you and won't let go, don't feel guilty for reading it!

(And also don't stress about the goals. We don't yet know which goals will be for which teams, but when they are assigned, I for one will try to read a book that will fit, but if none appeals, I'll just be happy to be reading a book that can count because of page-length.)

That raises a question that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to. I think it may have been answered somewhere but as I can't remember...

Can anthologies of novellas and short stories count if they're over 100 pages long? Page count is for the whole book/collection, not for the individual novella/story, right? (So long as we read the whole book and not just the individual story, that is.)

It's only stand-alone novellas that aren't 100 pages or more long that wouldn't count, right?

I am catching up with some of my graphic novels and finishing a couple of reads :-D I think those will keep me busy until the start date.

Yes, so books like Wool Omnibus, Four: A Divergent Story Collection, Side Jobs: Stories From the Dresden Files would count as one book eventhough they started life as separate novellas/short stories.
Whereas a boxed set like Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boxed Set needs to be counted as the separate books

Oh enjoy Alison! I'm not a big short story reader, but I really enjoyed those, especially a few towards the end that gave new perspectives of Thomas and Karin

Just complete the sign up form

Sonia will either allocate you to a new team, or an existing one as replacements are needed. It may take a few days for you to hear from her as she shuffles new sign-ups around before the challenge starts :)

We're closing sign-ups for reserves only on Wednesday (Nov 4th).

Sign-ups after that date will be on the reserve list and wait for open spots or need for a replacement.

All you have to do is go to the BOM thread and start discussing the book with us. If you want to volunteer to write DQs be sure to tell us at least three days before the BOM begins.

No problem. If you've been assigned a team just make sure to give your captain the link to your shelf.

In theory, edition you read. And that means you need to tag that edition as read. We'll be going by what's on your shelves, not what you post in thread.

Sounds good.

I thought of a related question when I voted for the December books. I've been on the waiting list for Uprooted since September and I'm next in line, I saw it on the list of books for December BOMs... if I end up with it in the next week and read it can I still participate for DQs/discussion points if it ends up being the book for December? And is there a limit to how preemptively we can read a book and participate?

No limit on pre-emptively reading provided you've read it through the challenge period and the BOM is a current one, then you are good.
We only have the finish it a month from the start of the BOM rule to keep it to current BOMs (i.e. not going back to ones from last year for example)

If it is like my Library you can suspend or freeze your hold, you will still be at the top of the list but the second person will get it first. Worth a try if you can log into it from home.

Oh tricky! Sure that fits our rules Alison. You don't have to answer all the DQs ; just participate in discussion so you may want to respond to others postings and generate discussion. Lucky for you I read that one and will chat with you on the thread ;)
