Synopsis: A Study in Scarlet is the first Sherlock Homes story written by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1886. This book, like most all Sherlock Homes novels is told from the perspective of Dr. Watson.
A Study in Scarlet starts after Dr. Watson is injured in a war in Afghanistan and has just returned home to London. There he meets an old friend and who introduces him to Sherlock Homes a seemingly mad genius. The new duo soon hit it off and decide to live together, it does not take long for Homes queer habits and customs to annoy the doctor.
One day Dr. Watson decides to accompany Homes to a crime scene. There they find a dead man covered in blood yet not so much as a scratch on him. On the wall of another room they find the wood “Rache written in blood.
Originally the police think that the victim wrote it in an attempt to wright “Rachel but homes soon deduces that the murder wrote it and that it is not “Rachel but in fact “Rache the German word for revenge. To Watsons wonder, Homes is also able to tell the police amazing details including the length of the murderer’s finger nails and that the victim was killed with poison. In a matter of day Homes is able to deduce who the killer is and capture him with ease.
At this point the book seemed to have split and gone on a completely random tangent, that is until you get to the end. The book starts to tell the story of a father and daughter who live in Salt Lake City, Utah. The live peacefully for years until the father irks the religious leaders by refusing to participate in polygamy and refusing to let one of them force his teenage daughter to marry them.
I think that the book was quite good but the one thing I didn’t like about it was how is split off in two so sudden and randomly. Other than that I think it was a great novella and a very interesting read with several good quotes.

The live peacefully for years until the father irks the religious leaders by refusing to participate in polygamy and refusing to let one of them force his teenage daughter to marry them.
His lack of action causes the leaders to harass, bully, antagonize and destroy his farm in an attempt to force his hand. In the end the father, daughter, and her fiancé are forced to give up everything they ever owned to try and escape. They make it out of the city and think that they are home free until one night when the fiancé goes out hunting. When he comes back he finds that the leaders have killed his father in law to be and have kidnaped his fiancé. So he races to Salt Lake City in an attempt to stop the wedding but he is too late.
Right after he arrived at the city his fiancé dies of heart break. He tries to kill the man that married his fiancé and killed his father in law to be sending the man running. The fiancé chases the man across three continents before catching him in London, England.
Along the way the Fiancé managed to get two pills, one a deadly poison the other completely harmless. When the fiancé catches the man he forces the man to choose which pill to swallow so, ensuring that god was his judge. The man had chosen the poison and in realizing this fact attempted to kill the fiancé but only, managed to break the fiancés nose spewing blood everywhere.
