Group read discussion is now open. Please do not post spoilers in this thread.

TamElaine This is not at all a genre I would typically choose....Historical fiction, yes, but I'm not one to read fantasy/sci-fi....maybe some time travelling, but otherwise, it's a genre I avoid, but I promised someone I'd read this a long time ago, and now that it's a group read, I have two reasons to give it a go....so imagine my shock when I find myself, only 3% into it, and completely engaged ! I'm loving it and looking forward to more.

Ioana | -15 comments I hope you'll like it, it's one of my favorites.

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) | 218 comments I'm in chapter 7. I was pulled straight in by the first chapter; the only problem I've found since is that the Jinni drags you in less, or at least more slowly, than the Golem, although they are given equal time. I remain a bit worried about whether they are going to have equal sympathy, but Ahmad is getting my attention more now that he is interacting with the neighbourhood of Little Syria in New York. I adore stories where monsters are human too, so do hope to love this one. The back stories, whether the religious student who turned to dark magic or the Bedu, or the once-doctor in Homs, I always enjoy. Great on the immigrant experience.

You might be a good one to ask for recommendations then, since you said you adore stories where monsters are human too....This genre was way out of my shelf of typical reads, but I loved it ! And wouldn't mind reading more that are similar....so, what have been your favourites that might compare???

Patricia | 85 comments I wasn't able to get to this one this month, but thanks to all the positive comments, I will definitely try to be reading it soon.

I started reading this one the other night. I got distracted looking up golem myths. I wasted an hour I could spent reading.

Now I am put on the spot to think of actual titles. :) Other than Frankenstein. I'll try; in the meantime, I'd love to hear recs too.

It's certainly the case in Valente's The Habitation of the Blessed which I'm also reading at the moment; the whole book is about the medieval monsters of the east seen from the inside, with inner lives just like people.

I finished this book. I thought the end was fantastic but I almost didn't make it that far. The middle of this book was rough going. If not for the author's ability to create atmosphere, I probably would have abandoned it.

That's great! Thank you !

Rachel (hrhrach) | 3 comments I LOVED this book. If already read it in the last year or two but it's one of very very few I'm tempted to read again. Hoping for a sequel!
