Steve Harrison (stormingtime) | 77 comments Hi All

I have almost 1100 people who have listed my novel as to-read. Admittedly, many of them added the book during giveaways, but I assume (always dangerous!) that some of them were genuinely interested at the time of clicking on the work.

Any ideas how I can get them to read it?

Cheers
Steve

Elspeth Hall (elspeth_grace) | 17 comments You got me ... personal experience is 1% will find and read it elsewhere of that 1% only half will give a rating usually and less will bother to review. Don't what ever you do contact them BIG NO NO will get you banned.

Steve Harrison (stormingtime) | 77 comments I know not to contact anyone, Elspeth.

Every month or two I get a bunch of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ readers for several weeks, then nothing for a while. No doubt most add the novel when they hear about it (giveaway or board comments) then, if they don't buy it straight away, it slips down their list and is forgotten.

Too many books, too little time...

Dwayne Fry | 349 comments Hot pokers to the bare feet will get someone to do just about anything.

"To read" is really just a visual bit of human nature. We all do this. We walk through a store and see some item that looks kinda cool and think, "I would like one of those some day" and move on. There are people who do the same here on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. They mark every book that looks interesting at the moment, but they don't have the time or money to invest in it right now. Chances are they're never going to read all the books they marked. Just chalk it up to a little victory. After all, you caught someone's attention for a moment and sometimes that can be tough to do. Aside from contacting them, which is a no no, there's really not much you could do to get them to read your book.

Lenita Sheridan | 1010 comments Coming from the perspective of a writer who is also a reader, I would agree with you Steve, "too many book, too little time." There are just too many good books out there. I just can't read them all.

I often put a book on my to-read list if I'm planning on checking it out from the library or waiting for it to be available there. Or perhaps I'm waiting for the price to be reduced. (I know, call me cheap.)

Steve Harrison (stormingtime) | 77 comments So much for a magic solution :)

Thanks for your comments. everyone. I think, on the whole, I'd be happier if to-reads weren't visible on my author page.

Effie Kammenou (effiekammenou) | 723 comments What if you were to do another giveaway and in the message say that if you don't want to wait to see if you win, you are running a one week sale on the book. That might remind readers of the book and get them to buy it.

It's a good idea, Effie, but I have a publisher so I can't mess with the price. It's selling pretty well, but it's a constant source of frustration seeing so many passive, but potential buyers whenever I visit Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ :)

Effie Kammenou (effiekammenou) | 723 comments The publisher won't let you run a promotion? Or they won't do one to boost sales even for a couple of days? I have the same thing. I have 700 people who entered my giveaway. 436 have it on their to read list. If only...

Steve Harrison (stormingtime) | 77 comments The book is on multiple selling platforms and I'm not going to ask the publisher to adjust the pricing on the off-chance we get a few extra sales. I prefer to stay here and whinge :)

Effie Kammenou (effiekammenou) | 723 comments I see. I'm new at all this. I'm trying to figure out what gets attention.

Good luck

Justin (justinbienvenue) | 2272 comments I've thought of a way to find out how many of your to-readers are actually interested in your book. I plan on trying this out myself and I've asked about it and it seems legit, here it is:

List a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ Giveaway and decide how many copies you want to giveaway. When it comes to writing your description about the giveaway, state that if anyone who didn't win is still interested in reading the book that they contact the author for a ebook copy version of their choice. If you wish to up the anti to your favor also kindly ask that they leave a review after as well.

There's nothing in the giveaway rules that says you cant do this. Like I said I plan on trying it out soon. Its a good way to see how many people truly want to read your book over just wanting a free book and its a way to contact everyone without getting in trouble.
