You had finished Week 46! You read a translated book.

This discussion thread is solely for your progress. (Book discussions go in individual threads.)

Did you enjoy it?

In which langage was the book written?

Do you often read translated books?

Jean Cole (joc724) | 115 comments Which book did you read? The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Did you enjoy it? Not at all. Some people think this is a life-changing book which is a mystery to me. I thought it was the most overrated piece of nonsense I've ever read.

In which language was the book written? Well, the author is Brazilian, so Spanish but maybe Portuguese?

Do you often read translated books? Not on purpose. Meaning I don't go seek them out.

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments (Jean, I completely agree with you - although you are more tactful about it than I am! If I could give that piece of crap negative stars, it would get all of them.)

Which book did you read? The Little Prince

Did you enjoy it? I loved it. It made me cry ... but that seems to be the case often this year.

In which langage was the book written? ¹ó°ù²¹²Ôç²¹¾±²õ!

Do you often read translated books? Not a large percentage - this year 6% of the books that I have read have been translations. But I have a lot of classics on my TBR list that are translations (mostly French, Russian, Greek) and I plan to read a few again next year.

Isn't funny how people can have such WILDLY diverse reactions to the same thing? I was so looking forward to this book and then OMG it was such complete schlock. It was repetitive, it had the sophistication of a book report written by a 12-year-old, and the notion that the whole universe conspires to give you what you want????? Ummm I don't think so. Oh well, takes all kinds to make this world go round. :)

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I can't really express how much I hated this book. What was the crap ... personal legend? Blergh. In my experience, all that the universe conspires to give you is a big pile of crap.

OK so that being the case, WHO loved this book so much? By that I mean - who ARE these people?

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I think there might be a correlation between this book and The Secret. I'd bet if people liked one they'd like both. I'm possibly just bitter & cynical (OK, I am, no possibly about it) but I've never subscribed to that kind of thinking, or the "everything happens for a reason" thing. Sometimes you can control your own destiny, and sometimes stuff (I'd usually use another word) happens that you can't control.

BTW, I love your name - it's my daughter's middle name (and was my very much loved Grandma's middle name). :)

¶Ù²¹²Ô²¹Ã« | 30 comments Which book did you read? Ruby Red by Kerstin Gier

Did you enjoy it? It was ok. The main character was annoying and I found it a bit predictable, but I'm not the target audience (lower end of YA). I only gave it 2 stars, but I may end up reading the others just to find out the trilogy ends.

In which language was the book written? German

Do you often read translated books? On occasion. It's not a deciding factor in whether I read a book or not.

Marina H | 272 comments Which book did you read?
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel

Did you enjoy it?
It was ok. It's not a genre I usually read, and it'll never be my favorite genre, but it was nice with something different.

In which langage was the book written?
Spanish

Do you often read translated books?
Yes, because I prefer reading in Danish, but I'm trying to improve my English, so I've been reading a few English books the last year also.

Christi (christibooks) Which book did you read? A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Did you enjoy it? Very much. I still think of Ove when I see a Saab on the road. It is one of the best books that I've read for this challenge.

In which language was the book written? Swedish.

Do you often read translated books? Never. Oh I take that back! I read Anna Karenina years ago.

Which book did you read? Ruby Red

Did you enjoy it? Yes, it was entertaining, easy to read and I liked the characters and the story.

In which langage was the book written? German

Do you often read translated books? Yes, as I often read manga (I don't read japanese). For the novels, once in a while, I read translations from german. When the book is english I usually don't read a translation, except if the language level is really high.

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

Did you enjoy it?Yes, I did.

In which langage was the book written? German.

Do you often read translated books?Yes, from English to Spanish, from Japanese to English (mangas), from any other language to either Spanish or English. It's wonderful to read a book in its original language, but I enjoy a lot - if I find a book - to read in my mother tongue :)
