Elizabeth (persephone17) Continuing on with our series, we'll be reading The Subtle Knife for April, which is the second book in the His Dark Materials series. This is the discussion post where you'll post your thoughts, complaints, questions, etc., about the book. Have fun reading! :)

Amanda Boyd (msduh) It's not often that I like the later books in a series more than the first, but I must say, I really loved The Subtle Knife. Maybe because there was so much of the story getting set up and characters getting introduced in the first book. Donno... I'm diggin' it.

Lydia (lapetitelydia) | 94 comments Pullman does a great job at creating such a rich story. The Amber Spyglass is where you can definitely see the parallels with Milton's Paradise Lost.

Trina (190nerd) | 17 comments I really feel like with Dark Materials they are one book. The first book was a lot of introductions and very little action. This book had a lot of action and I was very surprised when I got to the end. It kind of snuck up on me.

Reed | 6 comments I picked this book up for a one-book-every-child thing when I was in 7th grade, and read it before I read the Golden Compass. I completely agree with you, Trina. I assumed I missed a whole lot in the Golden Compass, but when I finally read it a few years later, it really was a different animal in terms of setup vs action.
