Just curious.

I'm moving apartments, so I'm packing and it's distracting me from editing the novel I wrote last month. So, I'm starting my next eBook.

What are you up to?

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments Working on the 3rd and final volume of my science fiction / superhero series "313". The first and second volumes are MISSING TIME and TIME SPENT and this one is TIME LOST. Putting the finishing touches on Chapter 2. The series is about a group of high school kids who survive a school bus crash only to find that each one of them now possesses their own unique power. In Vol 1, they found out basically what happened to them and why they are being hunted down one by one. In Vol 2, they are drawn back together to deal with an even greater threat, and learn who/what was behind what happened to them, and in Vol 3...well...let's just say things get really strange.

completed (and posted) a short story, just to entertain myself, but mostly i'm studying marketing.

lessons learned so far: very few writers make sales because of their twitter presence. (agreed?) very few writers make sales because of their facebook presence. (agreed?) very few writers make sales because of their pinterest presence. (agreed?)
or am i wrong? i know some writers wrest a buck or 2 out of their presence in the social media universe, but aren't those sources far and away less lucrative than the traditional sources?
i've read that the average eBook author earns under $500/year. if that's true, then aren't all the articles saying that twitter, etc., are essential... wrong?

Neil Bursnoll | 109 comments Trying to convert my NaNo from straight up adult horror to YA horror, and make it all sound nice and make sense for Camp NaNo. Plus rewrite huge chunks of it, cos it was a bit poo in places.

message 7: by Frances (new)

Frances Brown (gemwriter) | 3 comments I'm plowing through the first draft of a chick lit, my first attempt at the genre. Having a lot of fun with it. I'm usually a pantser, and wrote the first two novels cold turkey. This time I actually outlined the plot. I'm not sure if it's making it easier or harder to sit down at the keyboard. I know what happens next, so somewhere in my subconscious, I'm like "it's already written." NOT so. Gotta plow through until that crappy first draft reaches The End.

I can't write linear, even with a plan!

Today I wrote a maybe 5min script and a short story. Trying to make the short somewhat readable. Then I'm going back to writing eBook. Only have one more day on it before I go back to editing on monday. Can't see much editing happening during the weekend...

message 9: by J. David (new)

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments @tony Since the average indie author doesn't have access to traditional avenues of marketing, I think you'd have to say social media are pretty essential to them, which makes all those articles...right. But you're not wrong, I have made very little so far, and I've actually made more money when I could make appearances and hand sell books, but unfortunately have not been able to do that much.

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 41 comments I'm currently finishing a short story about a man who falls in love with his stepladder, and starting a story about a cat who wants to become an art critic.

I'm also finalising the redesign of my Casanova paperback, and trying to decide whether it's worth doing another promo week on my film crit book or just taking it out of Select all together.

Biznatch? lololol

@Tony & J.David I think promotion really depends on the person. It's very hard to make yourself known, especially if you live in the middle of no where like me, haha, without social media.

I got a 200 dollar donation last year. But I dunno if that counts since it wasn't for a book it was "because you got me writing again and I want you to keep going."

But I wouldn't have gotten it without twitter ^^

Hamid Karima | 24 comments Hello to all, I'm a newcomer to this group.I was writing a historical and fighting art fiction named (The Chinese devil castle))(I've written 30 pages of it)) .But when my sister told me about the hard life of a 12 years old girl; I decided to write a book based on this girl's real life.I think the authors are responsible about what happens around them. If I would write it, I will call that book: ((The Real Pains Of A Girl)).

message 14: by Brittany (new)

Brittany Willows (brittanymwillows) I'm kind of on-and-off working on the next two installments in The Calypsis Project trilogy whilst trying to finish up some digital art commissions. Both at the same time, actually. If I don't feel like working on one book, I'll work on the other. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten much writing at all done the last few days as I have been lacking motivation. :I

I probably need to read more sci-fi books in between writing sessions. That used to help me a lot, and lately all the books I've been reading are few and not in the right genre.

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

@j. david and @bisky: interesting.

i'm not ruling out use of the eUniverse as a necessary component of marketing. rather, i'm working on how to redeploy within it. twittering 'read me, read me, read me,' is valueless. pinning a 100 pinterest boards is valueless. compare: twittering a specific twist that demands interest might be valuable, as can be a specific pinterest board or whatever other implementation on a social site. but the bulk of eAuthors are horrible, are in many cases nearly illiterate. we, as eAuthors, may be fiction's next rembrandts, but why should anyone learn that we exist? that is the crux of my concern. plastering twits and boards while friending ad infinitum on facebook, are valueless because of context.

so that's what i'm exploring.

1776. the colonists couldn't fight the british on the conventional field of battle, so developed guerrilla tactics.
and won.

margarine sellers couldn't sell their oleo, so they wrapped it in tin foil which, back then, was believed by the buying public to indicate quality, and added food coloring to make it look like butter, and renamed it 'imperial.'
sales shot up 1000% and kept rising.

how can we be guerrillas, fighting the sloth in new ways? how can we add food coloring to twitter? that's my issue. the 'old' social media techniques have become the techniques of failure. all margarine is now yellow, therefore adding yellow to oleo cannot increase sales. how can we make our oleo green to increase sales?

Sofia Costa | 5 comments Hi everyone,

What am I working on? I do not know where to start ... I'm writing my first book, but now i'm blocked in chapter 21 ... I think I need to review it to continue... Is a typical YA book. The story comes down to: Sarah Bellona Enid, 17, she can manipulate the four elements, air, fire, water and earth. She falls in love with Nathaniel O'collins, beautiful 19 boy, that and can also manipulate the four elements. Only one of them can ascend to the highest place in the Coven. What will be? But like all teen books, there is a loving trio. Nicholas. Brother of Nathaniel. A lot of magic, fun, suspense ...

Sorry my English

James McCormick I'm working on the third instalment of my Sci-fi DRAGON series at the moment (Dragon: The Temple of Tamerlane) Only the first book is out so far. BUT... I saw a ZEN watch a few days ago that only had now, now, now, now on it instead of numbers.

This idea has really worked its way into my brain- I have no idea how I will make a story of this but I do know my subconscious is already working on that.

J. David Clarke (clarketacular) | 418 comments I've written 3 short stories so far this year, and have 2 more planned already. I've been working on them in between periods of activity on my other series. Sometime toward the end of last year I thought, I ought to plan a collection for when I have enough of them to publish. And today while driving the title of the collection suddenly popped into my head! :D So now in addition to the 2 novels I want to get done, I may have a ss collection by the end of the year to boot, if the other stories cooperate. Woot!
