Niles (professorx2) | 35 comments I have never thought books written during my lifetime were classics because it made me feel old. But being a classic would not be so bad, after all they have withstood the test of time and stand out among their peers. Therefore, I am challenging myself to read 12 books for the six decades that I have been alive. It works out well for me because I can choose one male and one female author for each decade. So here is my list:

Female Authors

1. Born Free: A Lioness of Two Worlds by Joy Adamson (1960)
2. The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin (1978)
3. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg (1987)
4. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling (1997)
5. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen (2006)
6. Heist Society by Ally Carter (2010)

Male Authors

7. The Andromeda Strain by Michael Crichton (1969)
8. The Shining by Stephen King (1977)
9. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho (1988)
10. The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks (1996)
11. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (2003)
12. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (2012)

I'm looking forward to reading these. Wish me luck!

Cosmic Arcata | 169 comments Wow this is a great list. I have always steered away from modern books perfering "classics". I guess one book that i didn't see on your list that you might consider if you haven't read it is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry Into Values. But you have inspired me to make such a list!

So not one but two challenges, I like your idea. Again some great choices, I think all are classics or will become classics. A couple of years ago I started a personal challenge to read a book from every year of my life from birth to present. If I put my mind to it I could finish is next year.
