I can't play. I don't understand the rules.

LOL I myself have issues.
As for the story, I think its the sweetest in the bunch, despite its gloomy observation on the transience of civilizations. Hope lives on as long as children can reinvent the rules to suit.

All he's reiterating here is how adaptable we are as beings in the world. There are primal themes that are taken up by each new generation and that has to be solace enough.
At least thats what I think hes saying here,

Alright, that makes it a little clearer. I did find the ending, that there would always be one last child playing the game, less gloomy than it seems when put that way.
