Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments I've stumbled upon an idea used in other groups and thought we could try it here.

Let's pick a challenge prompt each month (voted on by members) and then as many of us who are interested can work to complete that prompt in the given month. When we've identified the prompt we will tackle, I'll open up a discussion thread where we can talk about what we are reading, our progress, etc. (Other groups pick a specific book of the month and everyone reads it. I am open to that as an idea too so if there's interest here, let me know.)

No pressure here. If it works for you and you want to participate, please do. If you are in for February but can't do March, that's OK too.

My vote, to kick things off, would be "a book of more than 600 pages." I want to knock out the hard ones first this year.

Share your thoughts on this topic and, if you're in, your recommendation for a prompt to read in February.

Mike | 443 comments To do this, I would schedule in advance which prompts will be worked on for each month (Feb through Dec). That way we'll know to save those prompts for later. If we wait to decide the month before, fewer and fewer people will still have that prompt available as the year goes on.

For instance, I'm reading my 600 page book now. The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

message 3: by Megan (new)

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments I agree. I get my books from the library so that would be nice to know which prompts to plan out and coordinate with that.

Good idea though - it'll be a fun addition.

message 4: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee (ashleeg) I love this idea, and I second Mike, I think we should plan out all Feb-Dec. I'm currently reading my 600+ book City of Lost Souls and my dystopian novel Ready Player One, although, I can find them a different category, if really needed.

I'd also like to see one of the harder ones go first. A book and its prequel maybe? And then less than 150 pages be November, and a published in 2016 be December.

Patty Rose (pattyrose31) | 18 comments Love this idea, but I'll be hit or miss! I'm in the middle of my master's degree, so I read in between semesters. The next semester starts in February, so there's no way that I can get through 600 pages (unless one of the required reads is that long)!

Megan (mghrt06) | 546 comments A book that takes place during summer could be June/July
and Road Trip book could be August?

Romance set in future could be February for Valentines day?

I like the idea and will participate when I can! I also get my books from the library so I need to plan ahead which books I'll be reading. For example, my 600+ pager will be Winter, which I have had on hold at the library since before it was released ;-). If I get it in time, I'm in!

message 8: by Sara (new)

Sara I like this idea too :) Planning ahead is definitely helpful though.

message 9: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) So, how will we select what we do for which month? I do like this idea though.

message 10: by Christophe (new)

Christophe Bonnet 600+ pages would work for me; I started it but I don't think I'll be done by Feb 1st :)

message 11: by Christophe (new)

Christophe Bonnet Or we could make it the January prompt!

message 12: by Laura (new)

Laura | 44 comments So would we need to be finished with the book by The beginning of February, or the end of February?

message 13: by Jaimee (new)

Jaimee (erisire) | 17 comments I like this idea too! My 600+ is the Alexander Hamilton biography, I'm pretty stoked about it.

Great suggestion! I have opened a discussion thread to feel out interest. So far, good interest.

Idea would be to finish in the month of the challenge.

message 16: by Marisa (new)

Marisa Poltrack [book whisperer] | 194 comments I like the idea of a certain prompt per month! January is the 600 page book? I'm reading the cinder series for that so I have a few books to get to before that one. Maybe I can jump in for February's challenge :)

I love the idea of "A Romance Set in the Future" for February because of Valentine's Day! I vote yes on that one!

message 18: by Joanna (new)

Joanna I also vote for "a romance set in the future" for next mont!

message 19: by Carey (new)

Carey | 12 comments I also vote for a romance set in the future for February. Although, I'm going to have to research which books fit this category.

Alienated by Melissa Landers is great! I planned to read the next book for this challenge.

message 21: by Carey (new)

Carey | 12 comments Joanna, I will have to check into that one. I never thought about Divergent counting for this one. I've read it through.

I'm fine with "romance" for February - hopefully I can get that one from the library in time, because I definitely won't be able to participate in January's 600 page read!

message 23: by Jenncw (new)

Jenncw | 22 comments I like the Romance Set in the Future idea.

message 24: by Lindi (new)

Lindi (lindimarie) I love the Romance for February :)

I agree with everyone though, I'd like to have the months planned out so I can know when to fulfill the prompts. Right now I'm reading Dark Places by Gillian Flynn for "A murder mystery", though I think that would make a great prompt for the month of October.

message 25: by Bridget (new)

Bridget | 26 comments I love the idea. I concur that it would be awesome to setup the entire year.

message 26: by Roxanne (new)

Roxanne (rkmorita) | 41 comments I like that idea, some sort of direction regarding book focus, is good. Well if January is 600 page book month; I did Dan Browns "Lost Symbol". Just finished my book w/ blue cover (I think, it may change) Robert B. Parkers "Potshot". Currently working on fairy tale book & dystopian book. Will be ready for romance in February!

I have to get a much done as possible early in the year, cause as soon as the holidays approach I run out of reading time.

message 27: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I love this idea too. I also just noticed that previous challenge groups had a "read-a-thon". I wasn't involved in the group at the time so I don't know how it worked, but they seemed to have a bunch of "tag" threads where they ask questions about books based on a theme. I guess it's similar to what's already being done in the progress posts for each week since those have questions in them too...

message 28: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee (ashleeg) A romance set in the future is probably a great February prompt. Or a book that's becoming a movie this year, since we can get it read before the movie comes out.
