That's definitely a good idea, yes. Now I feel bad for my blunt-like merging style which I already did with two threads. :( My sincere apologies!
The approach would be looking something like this:
- for any introduction or any other new topic that is an obvious duplicate, there should be an announcement that it will be deleted, say, after 24 hours.
- also, there should be a suggestion to participants, to move all comments made in a duplicate into another place, e.g. the main "Introduction" thread.
Here is the question: how should we manage all comments that won't be moved? Move them manually into one comment in target thread, as I did previously?

In my experience, I would just delete the thread. You could send a private message to each poster, asking them to move the post themselves, but posting them in one large message will only be unnecessary clutter in itself. With the group being so big as well, you posting the comments yourself could lead people to becoming confused. ^^ A fair amount of time with a warning should be enough.

Thank you so much for your advice, and for sharing your proficiency with us!
You could make a tread titled "Archive" where you could shift threads to. Depending on the settings of a group, you can have it edited to where only certain folders are on the group home page. This would mean people would not see the archived folders unless they clicked on the "Discussions" link and scrolled all the way down, therefore, the threads would be tucked away nearly but not deleted.

We've created an Archive in the interest of decluttering, and I'm now going to close this thread and move it to that folder. Additionally, the Introduction folder is going to be deleted, with the Introduction thread placed in a new home: the Miscellaneous folder.
Thanks for the input!

All brand new introduction threads will be eventually merged into this one.
