Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I'm just starting now Of Mice and Men, which is my classic book with less than 200 pages. I want to read more classics and this one came highly recommended.

The compelling story of two outsiders striving to find their place in an unforgiving world. Drifters in search of work, George and his simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other and a dream--a dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch in California’s Salinas Valley, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie, struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and feelings of jealousy, becomes a victim of his own strength.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments Oh Sophie, I loved this one when I read it last year. It was funny (not the book!), because while I was reading it, I was enjoying it, but didn't really think I'd much connected with anyone or anything in the book, and then BAM. It was definitely a creeper!

Bana AZ (anabana_a) | 836 comments Watch the movie after! It made me cry even if I knew what would happen.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Aww I'm so sad, not because of the end of this book, but because I didn't like it as much as all of you :(
It was ok for me, but nothing extraordinary. Maybe I read it too quickly and that's way it didn't touch me, I don't know. I normally cry very easily, but nothing happened here...

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments I loved it, too! Did not make me cry - but I thought it was really dramatic, in the vein of the old Greek dramas. Classic tension building and boom! blows up.

Brandy B (bybrandy) | 97 comments I just read it. Didn't love it. Actively disliked it because it was just so incredibly telegraphed the direction it was going in from every word. I think it were longer and there had been subplots I might have liked it better, ironically

The writing, though, I liked. I'd be willing to read more Steinbeck.

JoJo Kirkman (jojo2013) | 315 comments I'm reading it for this week (classic book, less than 200 pages) too. Can't wait to read it!

JoJo Kirkman (jojo2013) | 315 comments I finished reading it today. I rated it 4 stars.

Jenny (pagelady) When I first read this book in the '90s, I had no idea what it was about. I loved it. It was fresh, and I had no idea where it was heading. I guess I didn't take the time to try and figure out where it was going, so of course I cried! I couldn't believe no one had ever told me about Lenny & George!!

Robin De | 5 comments I am listening to this book. I don't remember ever reading it and don't know much about it.

That's the best way to approach it!

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I knew nothing either, and was so glad I didn't!

If you want a longer Steinbeck, read The Grapes of Wrath, about 500 pages. It's the first book I read by him and I really enjoyed it. It's still about migrant farmers, but there's a whole family to read about, not just two people.

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3768 comments I read it this morning. It's been on our bookshelf for many years, since my daughter was in the 8th grade (required reading). I finally read it, after my 3 year old grandson picked it up and said, "Read this one". I liked the story and Steinbeck's writing. I've only read one other Steinbeck book, East of Eden, which I loved! I'll have to try some others. I gave this one 4 stars.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3239 comments This was one of those books that I feel everyone had to read in school at some point, except me. Although to be fair, my school didn't have very much required reading (in high school, one book and one play per course, which lasted one semester).

This is one of those classics that I'd always heard about, but never really bothered to try. It was a perfect fit for my PopSugar challenge's prompt - "A book under 150 pages." I honestly wasn't expecting very much since I already knew a bit about the ending. I knew what happened, I just wasn't sure how it happened. I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. For something so short, it really had quite a big impact, maybe moreso for me because I can see some of the young adults that I work with in Lennie.

Jean Cole (joc724) | 324 comments Read this for Week 39 -- Rejected Category.

Made this fit the Alliteration category because it was on my TBR list.

Five stars all the way. I had, of course, heard of the book but did not know how it ended. I love the simplicity and sparseness of Steinbeck's writing while at the same time evoking images and emotions so beautifully.

star_fire13 | 197 comments I read this for week 8 ("classic less than 200 words") and because it's been on my TBR list for a long long time. It's often taught in local high schools, but I hadn't gotten around to it (despite being a high school English teacher).

It took me a bit to get into it, but once I did, omg. Omg. So good!

Peter | -28 comments I read this for the 2017 challenge topic "BBC's Big Read List'.

I really enjoyed it and thought the characters were well developed for such a short book. I really enjoyed the dynamic between George and Lenny, almost like a sibling relationship; George played the older brother protector despite being constantly annoyed by Lenny.

The ending was tragic. (view spoiler)
