Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Also this Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies? Because it questions evokution. I think. Man I hope I'm travelling the right paths here. I own all these

Bella | 502 comments Just realized that most of my books are non-fiction, so I'm adding these to the list/pile:
Welcome to Braggsville by T. Geronimo Johnson- race
The Sellout by Paul Beatty, race
Beneath a Meth Moon by Jacqueline Woodson- addiction. For those looking for short books, this one is 182 pages. Also, many of Woodson's books would fit this challenge and are short...some may even be too short.
One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia is also short- 220-ish pages

Janice (jamasc) | 58996 comments I think you'll need j'mom to rule on those three books, Travis. Black Flagged seems to be more fitting than The Lions of Lucerne.

I was thinking earlier that perhaps you were overthinking it.

Is everyone ready to go? Books picked, favorite beverages and snacks, comfy chair?? The toppler begins at 9 am tomorrow morning in my time zone and I have The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks loaded up on my Kindle, waiting to be read!! :)

message 105: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18727 comments I'm ready! Books are waiting to go.

message 106: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments I'm all ready to go. Lisa Ann, Toppler starts at 9am tomorrow for me, too. Can't wait. Trying to finish some other books so I can focus on the Toppler books. I'm looking forward to finishing some books- I'm 7 books behind on my GR's Challenge.

One bad thing about the Toppler: while gophering, I added enough books that now my TBR book shelf is bigger than by "Read" bookshelf on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. I was trying to keep the TBR lower, but...

message 107: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18727 comments Oh gosh...my TBR is so much bigger than my read shelf. I probably won't be able to read them all if I live another 50 years, even if I don't add any more, which of course I will.

message 108: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 58996 comments I'm ready to go. I finished my audiobook tonight and I've got my toppler reading all loaded and ready to go.

The toppler will start at 9:00 am here too, but I have to work so I won't be able to start until later.

Actually, the timing of the toppler isn't very good for me. The last week of any month is crazy busy. February is crazy busy. I haven't had a day off since Feb 7th. And now I have a friend in crisis. Her sister is very ill. Still, I hope to get two books read.

message 109: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Yay! It's toppler day! It starts at 5pm here but I won't be able to start reading or check in until a bit later.

I'm not sure how many books I will be able to read. I'm aiming for two but I might be able to stretch to three.

Sorry to hear about your friend, Janice.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I xan look into those 3 books later on. I have 3 lined up alreasy. Usually I plan to read 10 for a toppler but 2016 isn't going to be a big reading year. I'm trying to refinance all my business debt to free up cash flow to expand and build a new barn. So I'm trying to plan and design a new barn nd I just can't focus on books. There is so much to look into and this is just the prep work to be able to even go ask to borrow money to build. There are 3 days I have places to go this week so I'm shooting for 2-3 books and take it from there. Stressful but I guess its a good stress. Well except for the hives. I always break ibto hives with major decisions. Thats not much fun but I've been here before.

So happy reading everyone and I'll try to keep the crazy to a minimum

Janice (jamasc) | 58996 comments Coffee! That's how I'm starting this toppler morning. BRB while I get some on the go.

Team Three Times a Winner is expanding their minds through some great reading this week!

I've tried so hard to limit my TBR. I have a rule: I cannot add a book unless I own it or can get it. So if it's not in my library, I have to buy it. If it's out of print and a copy's $50, I have to buy it if I want to add it.

message 115: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 58996 comments My tbr and tbl (to be listened to) are books that I own. I try really hard to restrict my choices to them. Both books that I'm starting for the toppler are ones I own.

Those books end up on my wishlist. There used to be a day when my wishlist was maybe 10 books. And then along came goodreads. :)

That's awful. It's going to be a difficult time. Stay strong. I'm glad you are able to be there to support your friend.

That's upsetting and sobering to hear, Janice. It's nice that she has a good friend in you to support her and her sister during this difficult time.

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Travis, sorry I didn't get to this sooner, so I'm glad you have other books already scheduled. Both Black Flagged and Guns, Germs, and Steel qualify.

Take plenty of pills (green or blue) during the Toppler, and get your wife a case of good wine. And good luck on the refinancing!

message 134: by [deleted user] (last edited Feb 20, 2016 10:11AM) (new)

Added The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks to my "currently reading" updates and I best sign off of GR soon, so I actually get some reading done, lol!!

3x Times a Winner, rocks!!

message 135: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments I'm off to caucus in a few minutes. Be back in a few hours. I'm going almost an hour early because I'm not sure about the parking situation and I'm the worst parker in the universe. And I have to go before I have so much nervousness it turns into an anxiety attack and I can't leave the house at all. (If I go really, extremely early I know I can get parking, so I only have to worry about driving. And that's enough for me.)

message 136: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Well, I'm stuck at home. My husband took my car key off my key ring and took it to work. I told him not to talk to me for the rest of the weekend and find some other way to feed himself. I'm going to be selfish and thoughtless, too.

message 137: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Bella, that was an awful thing to do. He owes you big time!

message 138: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 58996 comments Love all the pics and the hugs!

I had to go out at noon to run some errands so I started my book, Lolita (audiobook). I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it's sexual abuse of a minor. The very beginning talks about there being a crime.

message 139: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments The word lolita generally means sexual abuse of a minor. i don't know the exact definition. But you have to be careful searching the internet as lolita can bring up a lot of kiddie porn. I don't even like typing lolita as a book title because it just feels dirty

I found it about 15 minutes before the caucus started. So I was able to go. The key is red, so you immediately know which one it is when it's on the keyring. For whatever reason, my husband left the key on a red pot holder in the kitchen. So it wasn't anywhere "normal" and it was camouflaged.

Well, you can still tell him he's on his own, not because he screwed up but because you need to read.

I read the series years ago and the first thing I thought was Tirana who? I am glad you said that too because I was wondering if I could have completely forgotten a key character and was thinking that I don't have time for a reread right now.

message 145: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 18727 comments Ok...now I'm distracted a bit. lol I saw that they cast Idris Elba as Roland? I always pictured him as more the Clint Eastwood type. At one point, they considered Viggo Mortensen and I thought that would have been a pretty good fit. I suppose I will have to get accustomed to anyone they cast, since they won't fit the picture in my head all these years.

Kristie | 18727 comments Questions to think about while reading (these are copied from jaxnsmom's post for the extra points!):

The book read

What issue it’s about

What did you learn?

What are the legal, ethical, and moral implications?

Can you see the other side's viewpoint or understand where it comes from? (This doesn’t mean you agree with it)

What causes the issue?

Are there compromises, treatments, or preventative measures?

What actions can be taken to stop/control/prohibit intolerable actions?

As citizens of the world, how much responsibility do we have to do something about inhumane actions? And what kind of actions can we take?

Is having a label helpful for others to understand, or does it give a negative connotation that affects others views?

What leads a person to certain behaviors, and what can be done to help someone caught in the cycle? Is there a way to prevent them?

Who determines what constitutes the issue (like discrimination, sexual harassment or bullying)? Does reporting harassment result in appropriate action being taken, or turn you into a pariah?

Does inappropriate behavior invite inappropriate response?

message 147: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm trying to think who I pictured Roland as. Could be Clint Eastwood. Not sure. I've had ibternet but at a family gathering so no reading.

Yeah, I'm disgusted already and I'm only a few hours into the book.

So did the connotation of Lolita representing sexual abuse of a minor come from this book? Or did the book take the title from the connotation. I'm thinking the book started it all.
