I am shocked at the Brexit news. It is currently sinking in and, well, it feels like I'm slipping deeper into a nightmare.
It's such a sad day for us all.

Sara (scody) | 53 comments Absolutely horrified here in the states as well. I'm particularly concerned about how this might destabilize the peace in N. Ireland, as well as what this means on a practical level of safety for immigrants all over the UK. My own political leanings are such that I think there certainly are legitimate critiques of the EU, austerity, etc., but this doesn't do anything to address them and in fact makes things much, much worse, and in a way that the negative ramifications politically/economically may be felt worldwide.

I'm especially sorry for the younger generation (as a jaded old GenX'er, I can talk about the "younger generation" now!) who will see so many educational and professional opportunities dissolved.

I totally agree with you, Sara. This is what I posted on FB yesterday:

"The Brits have voted for Brexit for the wrong reasons. That's the problem. They haven't voted for Brexit because they are angry about the loathsome sacking of Greece, or because of Europe's shameful treatment of the refugees crisis, or even to save the UK from the ghastly TAFTA agreement. No. The British people have cast an ultranationalistic vote, that's the problem.

Nevertheless, rejecting ultraliberal Europe is necessary.
We are desperately in need of a social Europe."

I am extremely worried about Northern Ireland as well. I hold this part of the world very close to my heart.

Here in Brazil there is not much buzz over the Brexit... I supposed we are screwed up enough to care about it!

Nonetheless, I have been reading a lot from the international media online. What surprises me the most is how uninformed the decision making seems to have been... I see many complains of how the British press did not inform the population of the consequences of the Brexit.

Besides all the reasons you have already pointed out, I was particularly horrified upon learning that many students might lose their scholarships and better education opportunities because of this stupid decision.

I wonder if there is any hope for this decision to be overturned. Apparently there are many people already regret it. The hashtag #regrexit is trending on twitter...

Brazil made often the headlines in 2016 in the European press.

A petition requesting a second EU referendum has been launched and more than 2,5 million people have signed it up to now.

Stephen | 5 comments the process will only ever start once article 50 of the treaty of lisbon is activated and the houses of parliament can still block this as the referendum isn't legally binding. i voted for leave for reasons of an undemocratic organisation which I couldn't see how it could be reformed to be democratic, unlike sadly some of the voters used it against immigration.

Jenny Garland (jennygarland) | 37 comments I was devastated at the result of the referendum. So many people voting to leave the EU didn't seem to have a clue what they were voting for in the first place. There should never have been a referendum on this topic in the first place and the verminous right-wing press and far right racist nationalistic groups had a field day. It is a terrible terrible time for the UK and as a citizen I can only apologise for the stupidity of it all. I am fortunate to live in Scotland and of course we voted to stay in the EU.....Nicola Sturgeon our First Minister may try to veto the exit as we firmly want to remain in the EU. What a disaster for all.

Yes Samanta I read these racist ugly tweets on another page this morning.....I am horrified and terrified of the future and the rise of this kind of fascism.

Sara (scody) | 53 comments Yes, the emboldening of racist far right groups is definitely the most chilling immediate outcome. I desperately hope that Labour/Greens/etc. really can somehow pull together to turn this in a progressive/left direction, but based on the circumstances as they objectively exist, it appears that it will be a very, very difficult uphill battle.

I'm particularly stunned that the referendum only required a simple majority and not a super-majority of some sort, or at least a simple majority in all four countries. The sheer incompetence of Cameron's gamble is just shocking.

It is a terrible terrible time for the UK and as a citizen I can only apologise for the stupidity of it all.

As an American, believe me, I am familiar with this sentiment. ;)

I'm not very hopeful about Labour pulling anything together with the other parties Sara.....the party is in total disarray and it looks like there will be two leadership elections.....Conservative and Labour.....the only hope we have left is Nicola Sturgeon the Scottish First Minister pulling something out of the bag as the Brexit campaign has no post referendum plan we heard this morning from a Conservative MP.....it's a truly chaotic terrifying situation and we now have a divided nation. Cameron is to blame for allowing this referendum to happen in the first place.....I totally agree.....it should never have happened.

Sara (scody) | 53 comments I'm so sorry to hear that about Labour. Just as an outside observer, I've liked what I've seen of Corbyn; he seemed like a good corrective after years of Blair-ism. Fingers crossed that Sturgeon really can pull something out of the bag!
