Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments Post here to mark your completion of the "haven't read since high school" prompt, our monthly challenge and our bonus challenge "about a road trip" if you participate in that one for August 2016.

(Note to new members: You do not have to read a book for this prompt to participate in our group. This is an optional way for those interested to help organize the order in which we read the prompts and cheer one another along the way.)

Date finished: August 5
Do you recommend?: Yes, although I liked it a lot more the second time around.

Miz (twiggyunderworld) Book title (link if possible): The Robbers
Author: Friedrich Schiller
Date finished: August 8
Do you recommend?: Only if interested in Sturm und Drang and Romaticism
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? Required reading in high school which I couldn't complete because I was overwhelmed by The Sorrows of Young Werther. After four years I still felt the struggle of reading Schiller and it sucked. :(

Mike | 443 comments Book title (link if possible): Black Like Me
Author: John Howard Griffin
Date finished: 8/12/16
Do you recommend?: Yes
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? Required reading. I was a Sophomore, so Fall of 1985. I liked it then, but wanted to get a second read under my belt after I've lived a little life. Highly recommended.

Katherine (kiik) | 158 comments Juanita, are we using this thread for when we finish the second August challenge (road trip), as well?

Author: Erich Maria Remarque
Date finished: August 21
Would you recommend? No
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or was it required? Required for my advanced English class. I slogged through it then and now. I had hoped with time my view of it changed. But no. Now I'm depressed and in need of a new book to read.

Yes, I intended to that too. I've edited the intro to include a summary of the road trip prompt too.

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments Book title: Bright Lights, Big City
Author: Jay McInerney
Date finished: August 21, 2016
Do you recommend?: Yes, granted this book will not be for everyone. If you lived through the 80s, you might enjoy it.
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? This was a book read for pleasure. It was the first "grown-up" book I remember picking for myself. I am pretty sure I read about it in a magazine or newspaper (remember newspapers?)

Do you recommend?: Yes, especially if you are a fan of baseball.
Where did this road trip occur? All over America and the tiniest sliver of Canada.

message 10: by Sara (new)

Sara Book title (link if possible): Masque of the Red Death
Author: Edgar Allen Poe
Date finished: May 11, 2016 (read it early)
Do you recommend?: Yes if you like dark stuff
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? It was required reading sometime in high school, I think, or possibly college. It was the first of his short stories I read and the one I remember liking best. I didn't care for it as much the second time around. My tastes have changed, I suppose!

Jessica Holbrook (jessicalh08) | 133 comments Book title (link if possible): Night
Author: Elie Wiesel
Date finished: 08/21/16
Do you recommend?: Absolutely. It's heart wrenching account of a terrible period of history that is beautifully written.
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? It was required reading, and definitely my favorite required reading I had in high school.

Author: Harper Lee
Date finished: 08/31/2016
Do you recommend?: Yes.
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? Required reading in high school, I'm pretty sure. I remember enjoying it, but I honestly remembered nothing about the story.

message 15: by Anna (new)

Anna (annaholla) I finished both of these books pretty early on, but I'll add them to the list anyway!

Book title (link if possible): Kindred
Author: Octavia Butler
Date finished: 5/11
Do you recommend?: YES.
In high school, did you read this book for pleasure or as required reading? I'm pretty sure I read it for class -- I wasn't much into sci-fi or fantasy at the time, so I can't imagine having picked it up myself. But I think it was a choice from a list of books, rather than a reading assignment. I liked it then, but I loved it this time around.

Book title (link if possible): Butterflies in November
Author: Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir
Date finished: 3/31
Do you recommend?: Not really
Where did this road trip occur? Iceland
