Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Welcome to your team for this week's read-a-thon Group Bingo Challenge. This thread is totally yours, so feel free to take time to learn more about the members of your team, discuss books and activities for the read-a-thon, and to plan your strategy for tackling the challenge.

Your goal is to complete most of the categories on the Bingo card (we'll be super impressed if you get them all!) by working with the members of your team. Some squares are a team effort (with a maximum per member contribution indicated between the brackets), others can be done individually to help push your team closer to their goal. Pay attention to the card as you're working out your plan because any square that has a red starred square cannot be overlapped with any other red starred squares. Any square with a blue star cannot be overlapped with any other blue starred square. And any yellow star symbol cannot be overlapped with any other yellow starred square.

EXAMPLE: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han
This book could be used to check off quite a few squares -- female author, set in the summer, YA book, part of a series, etc. Since there is no overlapping, as a team you would need to decide which square to assign this particular read to. It could not be used to check off multiple starred squares. You could, however, count it towards your groups overall page count (O1), towards your 10 books read (B1), or any other non-starred squares.

There is a Mod assigned to each team to help with any questions, comments, or concerns. We recommend you come together, as a team, and pick some team captains to help do re-caps and keep track of what your team is working on and what progress you've made. Mods will be exempt from this role.

As a team member, it will be your job to check in with your team as you start and complete tasks to make sure everyone is on the same page.

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments Hi all! I'm super excited for this read-a-thon. Any excuse to read is a good excuse in my book!
I think it'll be good to share what prompts we each think we can contribute to or not.

I plan on finishing a book I've already started (G4)
I don't really read outside (N2)
I don't really listen to audiobooks (N4)

message 6: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments I listen to a lot of audiobooks at work so that is an easy prompt for me (N4)
I read a lot of fantasy books (B4)
I have started theft of swords by michael j. Sullivan before the redathon started and i plan on finishing it this week (G4)
I prompt I think I am going to have a problem with is (G1) Finish a book in one sitting. I am in a weird reading mood at the time :(

message 7: by Aglaea (last edited Aug 23, 2016 07:25AM) (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments My progress post, I'll update this as I go.
There are lots of Bingo-square opportunities for me here. Won't finish all, but will be able to cross off quite a few.

B1: I think I'll be more about adding to page and minute counts this time.
B2: This one will be non-probable. is happening now, Misled!
B3: Will read in this category, maybe not from start to finish.
B4: Never Let Me Go, cracked it open but didn't start reading when it was our group read.
B5: Will read in this category, maybe not from start to finish.

I1: Unfortunately I can't participate in all, will spend time reading.
I2: I have the first Modesty Blaise to be read for PopSugar I think; let me know!
I3: This could work.
I4: Already read my group summer book earlier this year.
I5: Will read in this category, maybe not from start to finish.

N1: I have several colours to choose from if need be.
N2: Seems very rainy here.
N3: I'll think about this!
N4: This one will happen.
N5: Can do.

G1: Maybe.
G2: Started a novella, Misled. Done 23.8.
G3: Done 22.8.2016, did over three hours.
G4: Done 22.8.2016, finished Only a Promise of which I had read 65% before (35%=140p).
G5: Done 22.8.2016, started commenting in this thread.

O1: I hope so! Status M 140+35p, T 82p, W xp, T xp, F xp, S xp, S xp. Total 257p.
O2: I could work with this, have the Henrietta Lacks audiobook among the audios to listen to.
O3: Not from beginning to end I think, but it could work if nobody else does it.
O4: Maybe.
O5: Yes.

What if we were to list our absolute-no-gos in one place so we could coordinate those easier? Maybe it would also be worth it to make a separate comment from our own update thread?

Brianna, that's a great idea with how you organized the team progress :)

It may be helpful to put names next to the prompts as members say they will be able to complete a prompt. Then we can see which ones we still need to figure out.

I personally will be able to complete:
B3: A book for the ATY Challenge
B5: Read a book by a female author
I1: Complete every activity
I2: Read a graphic novel
I5: A mystery or thriller
G3: Read for one straight hour
G4: Finish a book started before the read-a-thon
A4: An article in the title
O5: Add a book to the map

I will probably listen to an audiobook some but probably not very much. So you can use me as filler if needed.

message 11: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I can also add my covers as I complete a book so that we can see which colors we're reading.

message 14: by Sarah (last edited Aug 25, 2016 08:05AM) (new)

Sarah | 539 comments Ok so here are the ones that I for sure will be able to do this week:
B1
B3: My Lady Jane by Cynthia Hand
B5
I3
N3 Good Omens
N4 Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford
G2
G3
G4
O1
O3
O5

I might be able to do more but those are the ones I have books already to go for!

message 15: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I am pretty flexible, so if there is a prompt that needs filling, then I will help out. At the moment I am reading The Buried Book. It was started before challenge (G4), it has an article in the title (O4), and it is for the ATY challenge (B3). It could be used for any of those prompts. It's cover is majority green. I read for a straight hour right as the challenge started (G3). The prompts I really do not want to do are I2, N4, N5. After I finish this book, I will jump to whatever is needed.

message 16: by Brianna (new)

Brianna (bebecburt) | 546 comments I'm working on making a list of who will be able to complete what and what prompts we'll need to figure out later. I have to go to work so it's not done yet, but I'll finish later today when I get home! I'll try to have everything set up today so we can just focus on our reading!

Have a good first day of the read-a-thon everyone!

Libby Gregory | 3 comments this is cool, how does this group work? would love to be in it and get ahead of my goodreads reading challenge

message 18: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Finished All Shook Up. It actually fit a couple of the boxes too.

We can do this team, fill all those sqaures!

message 19: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Brianna you are a rockstar! Thank you so much for all the organizing. It is making it super easy to tackle the boxes. Go Team Peach!

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Libby, the deadline for the team sign-up was yesterday at noon so this is a closed activity. We'll be doing another read-a-thon later in the year which may include another team Bingo. I'm sorry! There is an individual Bingo card if you want to do one solo: /topic/show/...

I just read for quite a while so have finished my part of G3. So I believe that puts us at 4/5 (Aglaea, myself, Amy, Jennifer, Kelly). Only one more needed for that one!

message 21: by Deb (last edited Aug 22, 2016 10:06AM) (new)

Deb | 372 comments I am currently listening to A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn on audio. So we can use this for either O2 or N4.

Tonight I will read for one hour straight (G3).

If no one else is doing O4 (children's), I have one on my TBR that I can read tonight.

I am on page 595/817 of Anna Karenina. I will finish that and we can use it for G4.

In addition to finishing Anna Karenina and doing the children's book, I'm sure I can read at least one more book, maybe two. I will wait to see what else is needed and will see what I can do to cover some of the items that aren't already being done.

Thanks, Brianna, for volunteering to coordinate.

message 22: by Deb (new)

Deb | 372 comments Here's my book recommendation to the group.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie by Agatha Christie

I read this for the challenge and really liked it. It was short and kept me interested and turning pages throughout. I will definitely read more of her books after enjoying this one so much.

message 23: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (last edited Aug 22, 2016 10:11AM) (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
For my recommendation, I'm going to say:

Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton by Sharon Bolton

I've read a lot of great books this year but I think this one a little lesser known. It's a good mystery and character study.

message 24: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I highly recommend Dark Matter by Blake Crouch by Blake Crouch. He is the writer of the Wayward Pines series. I found this book super engrossing, and it is still stuck in my head.

message 25: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments My recommendation Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

message 26: by Susan (new)

Susan Hi everyone,

-I plan on finishing a book I am currently reading. That book could also fit for female author or a book for the AtY Challenge.
-I also plan to read a book of folklore that is a YA book or fit the book with an article in the title.
-I can also read a graphic novel that has a one word title.
-I also could play the read-a-thon games, read outside, and/or read for one hour.
-I could also read something historical, find a short story, or read a poem, if needed.

message 27: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I just finished The Walking Dead, Vol. 03: Safety Behind Bars so you can check off one of the graphic novels!

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) Hmm, should have read the directions first. I have already updated my completions thus far, but the book I finished fits several categories. I will just continue to add books to all the categories it fits and let the mods figure out which square you want to use the books for.

message 29: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments It's 22.19 in Norway where I live. This is my progress for today:
-I have listened to 2 hours of an audiobook: The snow queen's shadow by Jim C. Hines.
- I have read for 1 straight hour from 21:00 till 22:00
- I have read 70 pages so far
I am going to read for a couple of hours before I go to bed

message 30: by Aglaea (last edited Aug 22, 2016 02:51PM) (new)

I wasn't going to count the graphic novel towards my page count since I read them so quickly and will likely reach my 600-page max through regular books.

But we can go ahead and include it for now, just in case. That was 136 pages. I'm going to try to read more of The Girl With All the Gifts before I get tired tonight so I'll update my progress on that before I go to bed tonight.

message 36: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Sorry to interrupt your collaboration efforts, Team Peach, but I had to modify the card. I'm very sorry. I know you're all working hard and plotting it out but after several questions on this I felt the instructions were too vague and I wanted to make sure everyone was playing the same game. Unfortunately, when I make these things, it can be difficult to anticipate how you guys will read them and what questions you will have so what makes sense in my head doesn't always translate well. Hopefully this card modification will make things clearer.

Some squares were designed to overlap. Some squares were not. The change is:

Any square that has a red starred square cannot be overlapped with any other red starred squares. Any square with a blue star cannot be overlapped with any other blue starred square. And any yellow star symbol cannot be overlapped with any other yellow starred square.

Hopefully it is early enough to not too negatively impact your game plan. I apologize if it has. :x

1. "Only a Promise" is for G4, a finished book that you had started reading before Bingo.
(B1 is for a book you both started and finished reading.) 140 pages is correct though, last 35% of the book.

2. Misled: we have a problem, the file seems corrupt even after re-downloading. I added 35 pages to my total read count for yesterday. How and when do we communicate pages read or minutes listened so it won't become total chaos?

3. Still thinking about this one.

Recommendation: The Fire This Time by Jesmyn Ward (essays by young black writers on racism- an important look into race issues in America- it's a new release, and most of the essays are beautifully written and very moving)

Erica | 554 comments I plan on reading The Assistants after I read Homegoing (which I'm starting today), so as long as I finish 2 more I can cover red.
