Its because I'm constantly coming back to check this thread, lol! I'm addicted to looking for books to fit the shelves and categories.
ah, maybe it isn't quite yet where you are... but the day is more than half gone for me :)
however, yes, it's pretty much mid-month and nearly mid-year!

Help!! ( And thanks ;) )

Here is the link to the How to Play thread.
Feel free to ask any questions and we will try to help.

I agree! I've looked through the listed shelves and only find 4 that have books on my TBR. I'm going to have to really work on getting this list together. A couple of the shelves (indie-own and shifter) had nothing that looked interesting to me -- suggestions appreciated :)
Well, this month clinches it! I'm never going to be able to finish this game. I thought I'd just be slow. But there are two shelves this month where I'm having no luck at all, and I can't skip both.
I don't quite understand the shelf "indie-own". But in 30 pages, I haven't found anything that would work: first of all, a vast majority of them are available only for the Kindle; then, when I do find one that doesn't require a Kindle that I think I might like, either there's no "R," or my library doesn't carry it.
And the shelf "shifters" is nearly as bad. The ones that appeal to me I've already read (or there's no "r" or they're number 6 or 7 in a series I haven't started, etc.).
Is there any chance the rules could be amended to say that overall, no more than 6 shelf can be skipped (but get rid of the requirement that no more than one can be skipped in any month)?

I'd like to make that same change. I'm having the same problem for the same reasons (and, actually, on the same shelves).
oh dear... those were the 2 shelves I was considering of replacing yesterday!
How about if I replace them instead?

This is actually Tien's brain child, and I'm pretty sure, based on past experience, that she won't change the "now more than one shelf in a month" rule for skipping. I think the idea is to get us to read out of our comfort zone a bit :( Especially since "shifter" books, while not a preference for most of us, are pretty mainstream and easy to get.
As for indie - own - My guess is that this list represents independently published books that people own. That would be why most of them are in electronic format only, and why most libraries don't have them.
I am going to go look at the shelf now to see what my recommendation to Tien might be.

I had never used the site before, but just downloaded two books with no issue. Does anyone know if I am allowed to post the name here? I don't want to violate any rules on GR.

Thanks Amy. Those are good recommendations. As for listing the site...I put links to other sites on here at times and no one has ever made an issue of it.

um, what kind of site is that, Amy? If you have to ask, I'm guessing that it's not quite legal?
however, your note made me realise that there would be lots of indie ones on . Some may be free and some may cost some money. No Kindle necessary -some you can read online or there are a few options for files. I'll see if I can find some free ones which may fit...

This just arrived in my inbox...
Wings of Redemption (Return to Sanctuary 0.5) is free for a limited time on
It's shelved on indie-own by 1 user (non PAS member)
Note: oops, thought they're selling them on the website but it actually directing you to B&N / Amazon / Kobo / iBookstore...

Good point about the legality. I was presuming an established site.

lol - I love how you put it as 'intense dislike' although you do know that just makes me want to keep that shelf there...?! ha ha ha -yea, I'm evil like that!

I was just asking the question in general to make sure to do the right thing. I will PM you the name since I'm not an ebook reader and haven't a clue as to which sites are legit and which are shady.

Both are free and can be read on the computer with Adobe Digital Editions (epub file) for those without Kindles.
Okay, so...
I've replaced indie-own & shifter on basis:
1. difficult to get your hands on indie-own if you don't read ebooks plus I'm not going to ask you to spend the money to read them either! I definitely would not like being asked to spend money to complete a reading challenge especially on a book which I probably won't like to keep....
2. shifter books are usually a long series which may make it hard when the 'R' books are the 5th or 8th in the series and you've not read any of the earlier books.
3. I wasn't confident of these 2 shelves yesterday anyway so I should've listened to my gut feeling (!!!)
IF (like Amy) you've got books lined up for indie-own & shifter, then you don't have to go with the new shelves. You're free to choose either :)
My apologies for the inconvenience.

Replacing the Indie-own shelf would be great. I just don't read any books online or with any e-reader, so if that's the only access, it's extremely limiting. Or I could just take that one as a "skip". I still can't find a book on "Shifter" but at least many of those are books.

Yep, Anthropology will be no walk in the park, either. but at least that is more interesting.

ooh, that is perfect!
ooh, that is perfect!

I've already found a book for the Shifters shelf. Can I keep that one rather than replacing it?
Also, I've read so many children's books for this challenge already so can I change the Indie-Own for Anthropology instead?

But I don't think that totally answered Lauren's question. She wants to use shifters and Anthropology, and get rid of indie-own and childrens-literature. So I think she's asking whether she can replace indie-own with anthropology rather than with childrens-literature, which involves swapping the two substitutes.
That might be a question Tien needs to answer?

As LynnB said, you can use the old shelves instead of the new shelves.
Your second question is interesting. My first inclination would be that you cannot exchange one of the new shelves for the other, but after thinking about it for a while, it makes a certain amount of sense to be able to use any combination of them.
Hopefully Tien will clarify later today when she is on.

That's exactly my question. Thanks Susan.
I have found a book for the anthropology shelf but will wait for Tien's answer. If not, I'll keep the book I was going to read for indie-own.
Good morning!! sorry for the delay :)
What I wish to accomplish from this challenge is to encourage a wide-ranging sort of reads (as is the main purpose of this group). I know that we've had a few 'children' type books for the previous months and whilst I'd also like to promote indie books, in terms of 'genre', they are all over the place which we may / may have covered anyway. So, at this stage, I'd say you're welcome to pick either indie-own or anthropology, Lauren :)
