Claire Scanlon | 2 comments So I'm a teacher and hubby a deputy head... we have both worked in a great ( but tough) school. Really struggled to get kids reading so my husband ( the deputy ) and the head decided they wanted to do something drastic- get the kids reading... so like two blokes they managed to get an old disused double decker bus. With the proviso of converting it into a library... the bad fools have done it and it sits pride of place on the playground... it's great and it's inspired so many children to read... to enter a world of fantasy and dreams.'! In the hope of highlighting this, encouraging more schools and children to read we reached out to the press for the opening ( later this week) and do u know not one channel, paper was interested. Apparently inspiring and giving 200 children in a deprived area a place to read isn't important... if we as a society can't promote reading how can we expect our children to have a love of reading ?! Sad times when we can't help promote or inspire future readers !

Karen (raspberrybee) I am so very sorry this was your experience with the press. This is our usually situation for events at our amazing small town museum. I work at our local library and I sympathize with y'all about getting kids to read. Phones, tablets, computer, games, laptops, handheld games and so on and so forth......and parents who do not see the value in reading. Sad so sad. Kudos to your double decker library bus!!! Woohoo and Way to Go!!! What an awesome project. Oh the places those kids will go after visitng the amazing double decker bus :) Thank you for sharing your story.

Shana Kaplan (sek1128) | 92 comments As a former special educator, I think that's brilliant idea! Have you tried reaching out to local news casts on TV? Here in the States news casts often have human interest segments. In fact there was a similar story recently about someone turning a bus into a hands on science laboratory to teach and inspire children to love science.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

Shana

Stephanie (tigerlily69) | 0 comments Have you tried promoting it on all social media platforms and having it shared and retweeted? Things can go viral pretty quick if advertised in the right way.

Sandra | 272 comments what a great idea, even if the press passed it up.

my first introduction was with a 'bookmobile', a bus just like you've described. it would rumble around the city (this was many years ago) bringing the library to neighborhoods which didn't have access. it was a wonderful idea then, and this is a wonderful idea now. best of luck with it.

Gemma (gemmalou) | 1 comments Hi Sandra,

that's what I did with Claire's (or the school's original tweet) I hope it got people (and the media) interested.

Good luck for tomorrow Claire!

Natty | 19 comments It's people like you that truly make the world go round! If we don't instill a sense of pride towards children and reading, then who will? The fact that a lot of kids see books as a chore can break a heart instantly. I suggest that you strive to give your specially-made library the recognition it deserves, because it's ingenuity and thoughtfulness may inspire others!

Alyson Stone (alysonserenastone) | 149 comments I currently teach special education in Appalachia and my students have very rough home lives. We had a bookmobile system and it was cut a few years ago. It used to park in the school's parking lot and the kids would go get books. Ever since it was cut, I noticed that kids are reading as much. We have a school library, but don't have the funds to always have the latest titles and many of the parents don't take advantage of the public library. I wish we had something like this.
