Yeah. I have a serious series attention span problem and addiction.
Fortunately half of those only have one or two books left. Unfortunately, there are several with more than 5 books left, and 2 series with at least 20 books left. I'm looking at you, Drizzt and discworld. Though honestly those I might cave and separate into the sub-series before I get going. I think I'm more likely to actually pursue completing several shorter series than a 30 BOOK SERIES.

I am reading a lot of it because my partner read it growing up and loved it. However, I tend to pretty routinely give most of them low ratings. I just don't get British humor maybe? I really liked Mort, which has Death and one other book from another sub-series. But discworld is on my maybe won't finish list.

I think Discworld may be one of those series that you have to encounter at the right time or you'll never get into it. I tried one of the books at my college roomie's recommendation but it was a bit too... scattered?... for my taste. Nothing wrong with apologizing to your partner and dropping it. ;)

Glad to have another Slayer! Good luck!

Exactly! There's too loose of a connection between each book for me, for starters. On top of that the plots just seem to be a bunch of weird stuff happening for no discernible reason other than to make jokes that I can tell they are trying to make but that I don't find funny.

Yeah, it's probably too many. Some are ongoing, some I just need that last book to finish, and some I've not been following for a while. I do use FictFact to manage them, which is helpful. Though it took a long time to enter, and I probably have a few I've left out.

Angie- Welcome, fellow slayer! I love how you were so organized as to list all the books in the series you are reading!

My S.O. were talking about reading books at the same time so that we can actually talk about the books as we are talking about them. And he requested that we read a particular series, which normally I wouldn't have a problem with.
But the series has FORTY BOOKS. Which means I would have to spend EIGHTY book points to start it. Not gonna happen!
What should I do? Just roll with it and keep it out of my list because it's basically for a mini-book club? Argue to read a different series instead? Heeelp.

If you are only planning to read one book, then I'd treat it as a stand alone and not count it towards your series. I have some series that I've read one or two books in and don't see myself finishing. So, I didn't count them as I consider myself done.
Did you explain to him that you feel like you are in the middle of too many series right now and are trying to finish them rather than start new ones?

Thanks for the advice! I think I'm going to treat it just as a one-off book, since I don't plan to read the whole series.

Haha awesome! I want to read the Buffy comics if I can get my hands on 'em.

Series Points:
This is a challenge for two kinds of people: Those who want to read more series than they currently are, and those who have a bunch of series in-progress and want to reduce those by completing them and/or deciding officially not to continue.
Base Rules:
1. Read books that are from series.
2. For each book that is from a series that you finish, earn 1 book point.
3. For each series you finish (if the series is not complete, reading up to the latest published book counts), earn 1 series point.
4. (Optional) You may set a 'goal' number of book points, series points, or both. Like ŷ challenges, you can change this later, if it seems too high or too low.
5. (Optional) Once you reach your goal points, your challenge is 'complete'.
Extended Rules for those who want to reduce their number of series in-progress:

5. (Optional) Once you reach your goal points, your challenge is 'complete'.
Extended Rules for those who want to reduce their number of series in-progress:
6. Set a goal of the maximum number of series that you want to be reading at one time. Make a list of all your in-progress series. While this is not strictly necessary for calculating your points, it will help you know when you have hit your goal.
7. Keep track of three sets of series points: How many you have earned, how many you have spent, and how many you currently have.
(a) Decide on a number of series you want to finish before you start a new one.
---If you are going to try and decrease your number of series, but don't want any structure as to how, pick 0, but make sure you have a list of your in-progress series so you can keep track of how you are doing!
---If you are looking to decrease the number of series you are reading and want a structure for how, this should be at least 2.
---If you want to not start ANY new series until you reach your goal set in rule 5, choose infinity or any large number you believe is greater than your current number of in-progress series.
(b) Each time you want to start a new series, spend a number of series points equal to the number you chose from (a). (Increase your spent series points by this number and decrease your number of current series by this number).
(c) When you finish a series and earn a series point, this increases both your earned and current series points by 1.
8. Keep track of three sets of book points: How many you have earned, how many you have spent, and how many you currently have.
(a) Decide on the number of books you want to read from series before committing to each book in a new series.
---If you care only about the number of series but don't care about decreasing the number of unread books among the series you are reading, pick 0.
---If you just want to make sure the books you are committed to just doesn't increase, pick 1.
---If you want to decrease the number of books you are committed to, pick at least 2.
---If you want to not commit to any new books until you reach your goal, pick infinity or any number you believe is greater than the number of unread books in your in-progress series.
(b) Each time you start a new series, spend a number of book points equal to the number of books in the series. (Increase your spent book points by this number and decrease your number of current points by this number).
(c) When you finish a book from a series and earn a book point, this increases both your earned and current book points by 1.
9. When you read a book that is in a series that you have never read any other book in, this qualifies as starting a new series. In other words, if you have never read book 1 or any other book of Harry Potter, but you start reading book 4, you are starting a new series. However, if you previously read book 4 and start reading book 1, you are not starting a new series.
10. When your number of in-progress series is less than or equal to your goal set in rule 5, your challenge is complete. You can revert to just the base rules at this point, if you wish.
Anticipated Questions/FAQ
-If my series is part of a long series, and also part of a sub-series, which should I use?
An example of this would be the Discworld series, which has 41 books in the 'Discworld' series, but has a number of series within as well, including The Witches, Rincewind, an Death. It is up to you whether you say Discworld is the series or whether The Witches, Rincewind, and Death are each their own series.
If you've already started some of the books at the beginning of your challenge, saying Discworld is one series will let you access all of the books within it without having to spend book or series points on them, but it will also mean that you have to read all of the 41 books before you get a single series point to use toward anything else.
Another thing to consider is that Discworld has some books that are a part of multiple sub-series. Ideally, you would want to be careful to make sure you didn't get two book points from a single book if it happened to fall into two series. This just requires more careful bookkeeping (ha!) on your part.
Just decide what makes the most sense for the series when you add the series or sub-series, and then be consistent throughout.
-What if I start reading a series that I don't have the points for?
Subtract the points as usual, go into the negatives, and work your way back up from there. The points are just an indicator of how well you are progressing with your challenge.
-What if I abandon a series?
Do not earn any series points. You get to keep any book points you earned reading the series though. If you are doing the series reduction challenge, it comes off of your list of in-progress series.
-But what do the points mean?
If you are using the base rules, your series points are the number of series you finished and your book points are how many books you have read from series.
If you are using the extended rules:
-Your 'earned' series points will give you the number of series you have finished, and your 'earned' book points will show how many books from series you have read.
-Your 'current' series and book points only help you to determine how many series you can start. If the value is negative this means you have started more series than allowed by the number you decided on in rule 7a.
-If your number from 7a is at least one but not infinite, the number of series that you have reduced your in-progress list by is (earned series points)-(spent series points/# from 7a).
-If your number from 8a is at least one but not infinite, the number of unread books among your in-progress series has been reduced by (earned book points)-(spent book points/# from 8a).
-What if I 'finish' a series by reading the last published book, but later in my challenge one or more new books for the series came out?
Use the rules as written. Due to rule 9, it would not qualify as a new series and you would not spend points to start it. Due to rule 2, you would earn a book point when you finish the series. Due to rule 3, if at the time you complete a book it is the latest-published book in the series, you earn one series point. This is meant to keep you motivated to continue being up-to-date and finished with as many series as possible.
Note that this will slightly throw off your calculations for number of series your list has been reduced by, if you are using the extended rules. If this concerns you, you may choose to use the following optional rule: When you discover one or more new books have come out for a series that you have previously 'completed,' remove ONE point from your 'earned' and 'current' points when you begin the book to continue the series, regardless of how many books have come out. Do NOT add points to the spent points. From there, you can calculate points as you complete books as usual. This will keep your points consistent without having to keep track of anything extra after initially reducing the earned and current points to continue the series.
-If the series has in-between books, #1.5, #2.5, #3.5, do I have to read them? Do they count for book points?
You are not required to read any in-between books to count a series as complete. You may count them for book points *if* either they are at least 100 pages in length or are at least 75% as long as the shortest book in the main series. So you can't count a 30 page story as a book in a series where shortest book in the main series is more than 40 pages.
-Is there a time limit?
You may set a goal completion date, but it is not required.
