The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming�

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

I just started this a couple of minutes ago. I read the author's note, which sometimes I skip over, and glad I did. I didn't realize it was another author who started the book and couldn't finish it. That alone already made me a bit sad and then after reading Kaylin's review I know this is going to be a tear jerker!

This kid is brave. As soon as I would see a monster peer at me from my window I'd be running through the house screaming.

I understand why Conor did what he did to Lily but that was still really wrong especially when she was trying to protect him.

Second his mom has cancer and it looks like she has numerous treatments.

(view spoiler)[I was hoping against all hope it was not cancer, but it was confirmed in chapter Breakfast, I could relate to Connor, my little stepbrother had cancer when he was ten, I could imagine why Connor is so good for his mom. The hopelessness you feel the deep deep sadness you feel is horrible horrible, my heart bleeds for Connor. Oh and my stepbrother is cancer free for a year! :D (hide spoiler)]

Just read the first chapter. I agree with you guys, I'm not sure how I would have responded in Conor's situation, but I don't think it would have been like he did.

I've never had anyone close to me who's had cancer so I don't know totally how it feels, but I know it had to be hard on everyone who loves your stepbrother. I am so glad he's now cancer free! :)

Why when the monster talks about ending wicked queens do I feel like Conor's thinking about his grandma?!

The Rest of the First Tale

This is a really powerful book for such a small book. I'm really enjoying it!

Understanding

I know Lily just trying to help, but telling Conor that he's needs to have allowances made for his behavior because of what he's going through is just going to push him further away.

I would like to kick Harry's butt for Conor. He's already going through enough and to be bullyed consistently on top of it..this kids gonna break.

This book is heartbreaking!! And very good.
I really want to know what the nightmare is even more now. It seems like it's tied to how Conor is feeling, besides the fact his mother has cancer.

(view spoiler)[I feel so bad for Connor. His mom is sick, his grandma is scary (though her daughter is dying, so I don't completely dislike her), he's being bullied at school, and his dad is lousy. No wonder he has to figure out a way to mentally cope with things.

I don't think his grandma is going to be happy though. He destroyed a lot of stuff. (hide spoiler)]

Just finished. I did really enjoy this, and it is quite powerful, but it didn't hit me as hard as I had hoped.
(view spoiler)[The truth he had to share made sense. All of it. I can understand wanting it to be over, because the waiting and never knowing would be agony. But you wouldn't want them to go. You don't want to be alone. And everyone else was just feeding into that.

I like that there was a bit of closure with him and the grandma. I would have liked more, but it was good that there was an understanding between them. Something for them to build from.

His father is terrible. I understamd that he has a wide and baby, but his son needed him. I know people are complicated, but it's hard for me to forgive when parents bail on their kids. (hide spoiler)]

I agree with you but also for me (view spoiler)[ it fell flat somewhat for me, I don't know I think because by the fifth chapter I knew what Connor nightmare was. Yeah it is devasting that his mom died and his worst nightmare was that one thought... but I feel throughout the whole book he was punished and people were ignoring him and pitying him.. I don't know something just didn't sit right with me. Also, I agree his dad was a dick ( excuse my language, but seriously)! Family is there for you when tragedy strikes, no matter what. (hide spoiler)] I just think for me something was off, but enjoyed the first half immensely!

His Grandmother definitely reminds me of my Grandma. Mine though has quite the tongue on her, but she would step up if something ever happened to her kids.

Well I wasn't able to read at all yesterday so I'm going to get some done today.

Ok so the mess didn't repair itself! I actually like Conor's dad just a tad for being there, I guess he didn't have much choice though, after the mess. I guess I should say destruction.
I feel like Conor thinks he deserves Harry's bullying right now.

I just finished it. It's a pretty good book but This is a serious tearjerker!! But it also left you with hope that Conor was going to be OK.

Glad you enjoyed it, Colleen! It didn't affect me quite as much as I had hoped, honestly. But it did have a pretty satisfactory ending. I really want to see the movie now.

Me too...I didn't realize there was a movie coming out but I went and saw Jackie on Monday and it showed as a trailer and it looks really good.

It does look really good.
