Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome everyone!

Tulika, generally we ask for everyone to set a goal at the beginning. That doesn't mean you can't change it later and you don't need to select your languages right now.

For this please add me for 10. I am plan to read more in Spanish and that covers South America and Spain.... Many countries, one language.

message 119: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (cyndilou) | 1 comments Interesting challenge. Since most literature is readily available translated into English, we tend to overlook or forget the nationality of the authors, and yet I find that since leaving college I've sadly neglected a lot of good international writers. Some of these I've been meaning to read and never got around to, so this provides a little incentive. :D I'll start with 5 and see where I get this year.

0/5 complete

1. French: The Little Prince
2. Swedish: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
3. Italian: The Name of the Rose
4. Spanish: One Hundred Years of Solitude
5. Japanese: 1Q84

He was a Norwegian playwright but he wrote in Danish as that was the written language of the time in Norway and Denmark. Can anyone clarify which language I should use for this challenge?

I would put it down for Danish since that was the language it was translated from.

message 129: by Christine (new)

Christine | 4 comments I'm joining this challenge, and aim for 10 books. Not sure what I'll read, but one of them will be Maidenhair by Mikhail Shishkin.

I thought I'd share a couple resources for those interested in literature in translation to English:

-a great resource is Three Percent blog, out of the University of Rochester:

-Deep Vellum () publishes literature in English translation from various languages. I've found many excellent books through my public library by narrowing my search to holdings from this publisher.

Good luck to all on the challenge! Looking forward to your suggestions and reviews!

I also found some Listopia lists:

- Japanese Mystery/Detective/Crime Fiction Translated Into English
- Favourite Translated Literature

Thanks for catching that Tytti! One should never try to write one thing while thinking about something else at the same time. I was thinking that I was going to read it in german and accidentally wrote German instead of Dutch. German is my second language and I have a copy of Anne Frank's diary in German that I have never had a chance to read. I'll go back and correct the original comment later :)
