Judi (8bookdragon8) | 0 comments If anyone's looking for a good romance, I recommend Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips Heroes are my Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. It's a play on the gothic romance fiction like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, but it really reads well. I'm also not a regular romance reader either, but I highly enjoyed it!

Jessica (ipomoea) | 17 comments I'm a huge romance reader! Some great ones I've read this year:
Hold Me by Courtney Milan, who usually does historicals. It's a contemporary romance between a woman who runs a blog about the apocalypse and her friendship (and more) with one of her commenters. Bonus points: POC characters, a trans heroine, and neither of these things are made to be Lessons About Tolerance, they're just part of who they are.
Sarah MacLean writes funny, smart, sexy historical romances. My favorites this year from here were A Scot In the Dark (a takeoff on contemporary celebrity hacking/nudes scandals) and The Rogue Not Taken (a takeoff on the Kardashians and the infamous MOMA elevator scandal with the Knowles sisters and Jay-Z).
The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston is funny, sexy, action-packed paranormal romance about immortal warriors, pit bulls, and friendships. These are great if you are impatient for more Kresley Cole Immortals After Dark titles.
Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice is by Curtis Sittenfeld, and has been polarizing among my friends-- we either loved it or hated it. I loved it, but I'm a sucker for P&P retellings.
Speaking of P&P retellings, Heartstone comes out in January 2017 and is a high fantasy retelling of P&P with talking dragons, wyrms, and gryphons.

Oh! I love P&P retellings..will definitely keep these two in mind!

Rebecca (rebecca_splain) | 27 comments I have to admit that I hated Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld and couldn't read the whole thing because I thought Elizabeth went completely against type and was nothing like her character in Austen's novel. However, I did love The Independence of Miss Mary Bennet because it fleshed out a character who was sorely lacking in Austen's original novel.

I just finished Eligible. While I can definitely see why some people feel so strongly against it I will have to admit it was a fun, slightly familiar but yet not, read to start the year with.

Maggie (mk320) Reading romance is my guilty pleasure! I just finished The Hating Game by Sally Thorne and loved it. Only found it because it was a GoodReads finalist in the romance category.

Again, not a huge romance reader, but I enjoyed Wicked Charms (Lizzy & Diesel, #3) by Janet Evanovich Wicked Charms. It's a light, fluffy read about a baker from Salem, MA who gets entangled with a guy on his way to finding lost treasure. There's a supernatural element to it, but it was a fun read all around.

Hi Ali! I cannot recommend Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me highly enough - one of the first romances I ever read, and still one of my favorites! Excellent dialogue, great side characters, and just a lot of fun the whole way through.

I've also heard good things about The Hating Game, which Maggie recommended above.

Happy reading!

This was a write in for me in the first round - obviously I wasn't the only write in.

LdyGray | 7 comments If you like Regency romances, I always recommend Georgette Heyer. Think Jane Austen, but with more escapades! Some favorites: Frederica, Cotillion, The Grand Sophy.

For more sexy/funny regencies, you can't go wrong with Julia Quinn or Eloisa James. They are delightful!

Thegirlintheafternoon Ali wrote: "Thank you guys so much for the recs!!!! Now let me pick your brains for some more: how about some sweet romances? I read romance with sex and just skip those scenes, but do you all know of any roma..."

Ali, this book DOES have sex in it, but it's very skippable: Sherry Thomas's Ravishing the Heiress, which is my very favorite romance of all time - it's about good people doing their best to be kind to one another in difficult situations, which is a plot that is always guaranteed to make me cry happy tears. I also like Jennifer Crusie's The Cinderella Deal, which also has very skippable sex in a very sweet book.

And I agree with Ldygray above, who recommends Georgette Heyer! I think of them as more arch than sweet, but there are a TON of them and they're not explicit.

Lindi (lindimarie) Hello! I need some good romance recommendations for myself ;)

I'm not big on fluffy, sweet romances (and the relationship doesn't even necessarily have to be the main plot). Some of my favorites are Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, The Time Traveler's Wife, Me Before You, and The Nightingale. (And apparently I have a thing for tragic endings.. ?)

I have Outlander on my list, but has been put on the back burner for a while due to the length of the books and the series.

I like historical fiction (my favorite!), contemporary, fantasy. Pretty open to most genres - I typically stray away from most YA, but I'm not completely against it.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but would any of the librarians here happen to know if Swear on This Life by Renee Carlino is a bestseller? I know the author is a bestselling author, but I haven't been able to find out about the book itself.

Hi Lindi! I think you'd like The Song of Achilles, a retelling of The Iliad from the perspective of Achilles's best friend and lover Patroclus. Lush writing, good mix of history and fantasy, semi-tragic ending...could be right up your alley!

And if you're willing to wait a bit, I just finished an ARC of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, which is historical YA with an ever-so-slightly magical subplot. It didn't really read like YA to me, and I absolutely loved it!

It doesn't have a tragic ending, but it's not neat and tidy either. You might like Daughter of the Forest. It's one of those books I love so much I have a hard time describing. I just found it magical. The romantic plot is definitely back burner most of the book.
