Hold Me by Courtney Milan, who usually does historicals. It's a contemporary romance between a woman who runs a blog about the apocalypse and her friendship (and more) with one of her commenters. Bonus points: POC characters, a trans heroine, and neither of these things are made to be Lessons About Tolerance, they're just part of who they are.
Sarah MacLean writes funny, smart, sexy historical romances. My favorites this year from here were A Scot In the Dark (a takeoff on contemporary celebrity hacking/nudes scandals) and The Rogue Not Taken (a takeoff on the Kardashians and the infamous MOMA elevator scandal with the Knowles sisters and Jay-Z).
The Unleashing by Shelly Laurenston is funny, sexy, action-packed paranormal romance about immortal warriors, pit bulls, and friendships. These are great if you are impatient for more Kresley Cole Immortals After Dark titles.
Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice is by Curtis Sittenfeld, and has been polarizing among my friends-- we either loved it or hated it. I loved it, but I'm a sucker for P&P retellings.
Speaking of P&P retellings, Heartstone comes out in January 2017 and is a high fantasy retelling of P&P with talking dragons, wyrms, and gryphons.

Oh! I love P&P retellings..will definitely keep these two in mind!

I just finished Eligible. While I can definitely see why some people feel so strongly against it I will have to admit it was a fun, slightly familiar but yet not, read to start the year with.

Again, not a huge romance reader, but I enjoyed

Hi Ali! I cannot recommend Jennifer Crusie's Bet Me highly enough - one of the first romances I ever read, and still one of my favorites! Excellent dialogue, great side characters, and just a lot of fun the whole way through.
I've also heard good things about The Hating Game, which Maggie recommended above.
Happy reading!

This was a write in for me in the first round - obviously I wasn't the only write in.

For more sexy/funny regencies, you can't go wrong with Julia Quinn or Eloisa James. They are delightful!

Ali, this book DOES have sex in it, but it's very skippable: Sherry Thomas's Ravishing the Heiress, which is my very favorite romance of all time - it's about good people doing their best to be kind to one another in difficult situations, which is a plot that is always guaranteed to make me cry happy tears. I also like Jennifer Crusie's The Cinderella Deal, which also has very skippable sex in a very sweet book.
And I agree with Ldygray above, who recommends Georgette Heyer! I think of them as more arch than sweet, but there are a TON of them and they're not explicit.

I'm not big on fluffy, sweet romances (and the relationship doesn't even necessarily have to be the main plot). Some of my favorites are Gone with the Wind, Pride and Prejudice, The Time Traveler's Wife, Me Before You, and The Nightingale. (And apparently I have a thing for tragic endings.. ?)
I have Outlander on my list, but has been put on the back burner for a while due to the length of the books and the series.
I like historical fiction (my favorite!), contemporary, fantasy. Pretty open to most genres - I typically stray away from most YA, but I'm not completely against it.

Hi Lindi! I think you'd like The Song of Achilles, a retelling of The Iliad from the perspective of Achilles's best friend and lover Patroclus. Lush writing, good mix of history and fantasy, semi-tragic ending...could be right up your alley!
And if you're willing to wait a bit, I just finished an ARC of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, which is historical YA with an ever-so-slightly magical subplot. It didn't really read like YA to me, and I absolutely loved it!

It doesn't have a tragic ending, but it's not neat and tidy either. You might like Daughter of the Forest. It's one of those books I love so much I have a hard time describing. I just found it magical. The romantic plot is definitely back burner most of the book.
