Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments I found the Handmaid's Tale in a Romance book list. Does anyone know if it actually counts?

I wouldn't classify Handmaid's Tale as Romance. But according to our rules, if it is listed you can use it.

Thanks, I changed it to Persuasion, which should fit better.

Kathleen | 5327 comments Zoe, this is such a great list. I have some of them for my Bingo too. Persuasion is a good pick--my favorite Austen so far. Enjoy!

message 6: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Agreed, Persuasion is a great pick for romance and also my favourite Austen!

message 7: by Zoe (new)

Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments It's good to hear so many good things about Persuasion. Those lists are suspect - I was looking at one list of satire books. 1984 was on it. I've read that one and humour/satire is NOT a category I would have chosen.

message 8: by Nathalie (new)

Nathalie | 236 comments Good luck on your challenge, Zoe. Persuasion is indeed a very good choice for romance. It's my favourite Austen too.

message 9: by Renee (new)

Renee | 727 comments Persuasion is also on my list for next year. I'm looking forward to it, because a lot of people here seem to really like it. You have a great list of books there. I hope you enjoy them, and have fun with your challenge :)

message 10: by Olivia (new)

Olivia (vinjii) Persuasion is probably my favourite Austen book. Good luck with your challenge :) Also thank you for bringing to my attention that Dubliners is so short!

message 11: by Zoe (last edited Jan 02, 2017 01:22PM) (new)

Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments First one read. And I think I may have misinterpreted the short story one Olivia sorry. Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories so I thought it fit, but after re-looking at the wording - maybe not.

Bat-Cat | 986 comments Really nice list, Zoe!!! Lots of luck!!! ;-)

Pink | 5491 comments How did you find Sappho? I keep meaning to read this, but never seem to get around to it.

Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments Pink wrote: "How did you find Sappho? I keep meaning to read this, but never seem to get around to it."

It was really interesting. The introduction talked about what we know about her life and what we don't. About the myths about her that have sprung up in the absence of information, and how certain fragments have been preserved. It is still hard really get into Sappho as a writer though. At the time this was written only of full poem had survived (I liked that one), a few fragmented ones and many single lines. I randomly found that in 2014 they found another whole poem and another fragmented one.

message 15: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments The introduction sounds interesting. I know that we only have small fragments of her work, so it's good to get a background about why this is. I'll have to check out the copy I have on kindle.

message 16: by Zoe (new)

Zoe (bookfanatic66) | 126 comments Four now done. I'm determined not to finish it at the last minute this year.

The Art of Happiness
The Art of Happiness by Epicurus
Is really interesting if you are interested in Ancient Greece and/or Philosophy.

The eternally hard question. Maybe, arguably... One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Potiki, The Trial, Madam Bovary, The Bone People?

Which ones have have you liked the most?

That was really good. When I first started it I wasn't sure, but I got more into it I liked it. By the time I had finished it I thought it was great.
