Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9826 comments I finished The Wrong Side of Goodbye The Wrong Side of Goodbye (Harry Bosch, #21; Harry Bosch Universe, #27) by Michael Connelly by Michael Connelly.

In this addition to the series Harry Bosch investigates two cases: an octogenarian billionaire is searching for a possible heir and a serial rapist is targeting young women. Half-brother Mickey Haller helps with some legal issues....and it's fun to see them working together. Good mystery. 3.5 stars.

Linda (lndoyle) | 26 comments Just finished A Share in Death, by Deborah Crombie.
If this first in the series is representative of all subsequent of her Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James crime novels, I would place it firmly in the middle of the police procedural genre between more serious, darker ones like Elizabeth George or P.D. James books, and the lighter, more predictable cozy mysteries. The two main characters are sympathetic and smart, the violence and gore are kept to a minimum, and the storyline was involving and good. I liked it! An adult-ed class on mysteries that I'm enrolled in is using this book as one of its texts, which indicates to me that it's deemed worthy by others, too.

Sean Peters | 155 comments The Policewoman by Justin W.M. Roberts

Firstly thank you to Justin, the author for a copy for a honest review.

I must mention the new cover is better than the previous cover. Right that's the only negative !

In the year 2026, narcoterrorism wreaks havoc on the world as drug cartels operate as dominating, murderous dictatorships. The powerful Irish Drug Cartel has set up drug manufacturing plants in England, Ireland, and Indonesia and they will kill anyone who gets in their way. Sarah is an ambitious policewoman from an antiterrorist unit. She's also smart, beautiful, and extremely good at her job, which is why she is assigned to an Interpol Incident Response Team, set up to find and stop The Cartel. Alongside colleagues from the United Kingdom's SAS, she must quickly learn new Close Quarters Battle tactics and apply them to a vengeful and threatening battlefield. Sarah's investigation appears to be going well until the fight turns personal. She must now struggle to save her friends, family, and even herself. Spanning the globe with a keen knowledge of special forces tactics and some genuinely shocking twists, this book warns of a bloody, drug-addled future we may soon face.

This book is filled with action, pace, romance, quick wit, great story, lots of twists. And some great that the book is set only ten years in the future, so makes interesting reading as we have King William, an action packed head of Military in Prince Harry , it does make for some great plots.

Full of action as mentioned, and very violent, but criminals are violent. I really enjoyed the two powerful main characters in Sarah and Michael.

At 480 pages a lot of story is fitted into this book, as we travel all over England, Ireland and Indonesia. Full of great characters from SAS to some very nasty criminals.

The author has put together an action packed, rollercoaster of a ride thriller, with action, great knowledge on the military, as far as I know. Full of twists that you do not know where they will take you next.

Sarah is an excellent protagonist, a tough woman who still values family and friendship and who is very cool under fire , Michael is her perfect partner.

There is romance, heartache, death and determination all throughout, and some heartbreaking moments.

Really enjoyed this book. Thanks for the copy. A clear four stars from me.

In fact every review I have seen is 4 or 5 stars, so congratulations.

In this 14th book in the series Gabriel Allon, Israeli spy and art restorer, gets pulled into a case involving a stolen Caravaggio painting. The inquiry morphs into a plan to steal major assets from Syrian tyrant Bashar al-Assad. Good thriller. 3.5 stars.

John Yesterday, I finished The Hummingbird. Liked the main character, Anna, and the Finnish setting, but by the end I was ready for it to be over. Author included a plotline about a Kurdish immigrant family that didn't really fit in, making the book longer than it should've been. Definitely want to read the sequel.

Sean Peters | 155 comments The Cruelty (The Cruelty, #1) by Scott Bergstrom

When her diplomat father is kidnapped and the U.S. Government is unable to help, 17 year-old Gwendolyn Bloom sets off across the sordid underbelly of Europe to rescue him.

Following the only lead she has—the name of a Palestinian informer living in France—she plunges into a brutal world of arms smuggling and human trafficking. As she journeys from the slums of Paris, to the nightclubs of Berlin, to the heart of the most feared crime family in Prague, Gwendolyn discovers that to survive in this new world she must become every bit as cruel as the men she’s hunting.

The story starts off very slow for 2-3 chapters, and nearly gave up.

She travels to Paris and she meets and works with Yael, the best character in the book.

With the story travelling from New York City, to Europe and through cities like, Paris, Berlin and Prague, seeing the underground areas of these cities.

The book travels through at a reasonable pace, some quite far fetched action scenes, not really much tension, twists or gripping story.

To me just an average pace okay book, nothing special. Not much more you can say. Over hyped about !

Three Stars !

Today I set a record for myself -- I finished reading two five-star novels. It's another fun night of no sleep, so I had ample opportunity.

First, Alias Grace, by Margaret Atwood, which is based on a real 19th-century murder, and second, Lincoln in the Bardo, which has nothing to do with crime but is set around the death of Abraham Lincoln's son Willie.

Currently reading The Disappearance of Adèle Bedeau, by Graeme Macrae Burnet, which is a crime novel.

message 245: by Linda (new)

Linda (lndoyle) | 26 comments Just finished Gray Mountain, by John Grisham.
Definitely not one of Grisham's most riveting novels, but not bad, just a bit disappointing. The villain this time is the Appalachian coal mining industry in toto, and the protagonist is a young NYC lawyer, Samantha Kofer, who is biding her time interning at a rural Virginia legal clinic while waiting to be rehired by her previous firm back home, and who gets mixed up with some anti-strip-mining crusaders. Several sad pro bono cases are presented to illustrate how horrible Big Coal is, but the character development just never clicked for me like it usually does in other Grisham stories, nor did the overall suspense in the final showdown.
