Marie (UK) (mazza1) | 601 comments one very surprising read i had was The Heart Goes Last.

I am not sure why this book was on my TBR at all I have only read one other Attwood (The Handmaid's Tale) which i listened to on audio and found truly awful, so why i put this on my list is beyond me.

Having said that I thoroughly enjoyed this book which is published a full 30 years after the other. It truly shows to me how Attwood's writing has developed. It is a well crafted beautifully written book. All is not right with Stan and Charmaine's world, all but penniless and in dangerous surroundings they don't know what to do next. Then they see an advert about a communal living experiment in "Consilience". Looking like the answer to all their problems they sign on for this utopian lifestyle. All seems to be going well until Charmaine starts an affair which is a long way from being what it seems. More like a cult than utopia their world is a far cry from their expectations. This is a multi-layered read. Attwood using descriptive phrasing to evoke a vision and feel for the society. A small cast of Characters create a much larger world. There is irony or a sense of satire. The ending leaves a little to be desired ( i like finality) but it is a 0.5 in a series and this may account for that. I will probably try others in the series and would give this one a resounding 4 stars.

And by far my worst read so far
Louder Than a Whisper: Clearer Than a Bell

this has an average rating of 4.64 so I expected so much of it and it was truly 2 and a half hours of my life which i will never get back
my review is here /review/show...

i like the sound of Giovanni's Room

Cat (cat_uk) | 307 comments Marie, I totally agree that Giovanni's Room is brilliant!

I've been lucky so far, with lots of good books (The Bear and the Nightingale an early standout, and I loved listening to Bad Feminist), but the last one I read - The Good Girl was not. Certainly didn't live up to the blurb or the "thriller" / "suspense" tag...

I chose to read Cory Doctorow's book Information Doesn't Want to Be Free because I needed a non-fiction book, and I admire Doctorow. It is amazing! I can't figure out how to link to my review from my iPad -- but check it out if you can. It might just be one of those everyone-needs-to-read-this books.

Charity | 577 comments I read The Name of the Wind which was definitely a best read for me. It has a great epic feel and is uniquely written in that there is a story going on, but part of it is a story being told to get all the background. The characters are really fun too. I highly recommend and can't wait to read the next in the series.

Oh I was just checking that out online...bummer...now I'm not sure I'm in a rush to read the second if I just have to sit around wait. That's too bad.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1270 comments The Essex Serpent
I had high hopes for this book but it fell flat. I did like the main characters of Cora and Will. I felt that there wasn't enough of the Essex Serpent story. I was saddened about Cora's friend, Stella and her illness. I gave it three stars. I had a hard time following the plot. I was hoping Will and Cora would end up together but I was confused if they were together or not.

Aw, that's disheartening, isn't it! especially when it's not clear whether they end up together or not... Sometimes, I don't mind an ambiguous ending but not when it comes to couples :p

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1270 comments The summary stated they fall in love. He definitely loved her but I am not so sure about her loving him.

hey, I have an idea... you could always google for the ending... I'm sure someone somewhere would have spoiled it lol

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1270 comments True, I will look it up. At least I finished it on time. It is a two week loan from the library because it is new and I had it on wait list all summer.

I looked up a summary/review of the book and the reviewer was just as confused as I was.
