lacy white (lacymiri) I don't have a review for this book but I have read it. I read it once when I was in high school and I really liked it. But when I tried to read it again this past year, I couldn't get past the first 20 pages. I really enjoyed the concept of the book. (I saw the movie). But I was just so confused about what was going on and everything.

Phil J I love this book, but I'm afraid to reread it. I read it probably into double-digits during my teen years, and it became my metaphor for everything. I still think about the Great Question sometimes. I'm worried that if I go back, it will be less genius than I remember.

Mama X (mamax) | 37 comments Listened to the audio book back in 2012.
RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

message 5: by Nik (new) - rated it 5 stars

Nik (bleepnik) | 852 comments Zipped through it in a few hours. It was just as good as I remembered it!

Haley (haleymadd) I just finished, this book didn't live up to the hype I expected it to. I'm not sure, it was funny to me more in the beginning. I was kind of struggling to get through it, but I did end up finishing it. It was a good book overall, just not something I would usually read.

Eileen | 190 comments I've finished the book :) I thought I would like it but I really didn't.. I'm not used to sci-fi and I think I absurd books aren't my type. Anyway, at least I finished it! :)

Auntie Terror (auntie_terror) | 486 comments Done. And looking forward to the other four parts (which will have to wait a little, though, as there are other things to read first.
What I liked most about the book is that it isn't merely a humourist sci go novel, but often offers evilly clever and acidly sarcastic comments on our reality - as much as Discworld isn't merely a fantasy series or parody of such. Adams's book may be almost 40 years old, but many of these "remarks" on humankind and life still hit the spot today, in my opinion.
What I found weird is how badly the lectorate seems to have worked: my copy holds two obviously wrong words that I've noticed - pavement for payment, and guest for host... very strange.

I also have a favourite quote:
"Life, loathe it or ignore it, you can't like it." Marvin, of course...

Amber (amberwallace) Finished listening to the audio and felt that this book was frivolous. It had some funny moments moments. It had some moments where I was a little confused and re-listened to them to understand.

I did love that Stephen Fry was the Narrator of the audio format I listened to.

Glad I read it so I will now understand references made to the book without them having to be explained.

Over all Glad to have read the novel but don't think I will ever read it again.

Taylor C | 454 comments I don't think I would have liked this if I read it. I listened to the audiobook by Stephen Fry.

This is my personal opinion though! I don't always come up with appropriate voices per character in my head lol. Stephen Fry does a fantastic job of deep over powering voices, little mouse squeaks, and doomed singing for Ed.

For the overall story, I was cracking up in several places! Then, in other places I found myself really wanting to skip parts. But I didn't. :)

Not entirely sure yet, but I might read the rest of the series. It took me a long time to get to this one, so I most likely will way down the road from now.

Lindsay | 1337 comments Stephen Fry is fabulous reading audiobooks. I love to listen to him reading the Harry Potter books.

message 12: by Winter, Group Reads (new) - rated it 4 stars

Winter (winter9) | 4972 comments I could definitely see this being a very good listen with a better flow.

Alicia | 167 comments This is my second time reading this and I loved it again. It's so absurd in a great way.

It was phenomenal, Lindsay and Winter! I listened to Stephen Fry reading HP4 when I was younger on cassette tape... brilliant! Lol. Jim Dale reads the US versions, and he also does an amazing job.

But with Hitchiker's Guide, the voices he created is something I know I couldn't have done if I read it. I'll most likely also be listening to him for The Restaurant at the End of the Universe.

zandrama | 152 comments I finished it a couple of days ago. Here's my review:
/review/show...

I'm still disappointed so I might have to re-read it on paper soon.

message 16: by Gail (new) - rated it 5 stars

Gail | 192 comments I found this book to be refreshing. I usually read mystery, suspense, psychological thrillers. I found this to be a fun, quick read. There was so much humor entwined with real space / astronomy concepts. I really enjoyed reading this book.

Lindsay | 1337 comments Looks like there are lots of mixed feelings on this book :-)

message 18: by Deborah (new) - added it

Deborah Obida | 97 comments I really like the book, i find the whole galaxy thing and interesting.
