Beth Carpenter (emma2009) Could someone suggest a book to read for someone who has never read Kafka?
I am torn between 'THE CASTLE' and 'METAMORAPHISIS'. Any suggestions?

Steve | 1 comments Beth,

Both are great works. I think the Castle is less accessible, however, than either of the Kafka's other two novels -- the Trial or Amerika. The Trial and the Metamorphosis are probably Kafka's most well-known works.

Beth Carpenter (emma2009) Thanks for the recommendation Steve. Will look at both of them further.

E.C. Marshall | 1 comments Between The Castle and Metamorphosis, I'd choose Metamorphosis as my introduction to Kafka.

But, I'll take the liberty of suggesting that you start with The Trial. I have two reasons: 1. Because the protagonist's professional life is one that we citizens of the 21st century can relate to at least somewhat. 2. The Trial is, in my opinion, the most Kafkaesque. (not that it's the best, I prefer The Castle, but it should clear up any mystery about how the term Kafkaesque came to be coined).

Hi Beth,
I would certainly suggest to start with the short stories first. Here's a translation work I particularly like:
Happy reading :-)
