I completely missed the fact the 2016 winner had been announced in March. Here's a link to it:

I've heard of many of the Honor list books and authors but not the winner, Anna-Marie McLemore. Saying that I'm no expert on this award overall. I know the basic idea behind it and it's theme, plus it's author, but relatively few of the winners.

The 2018 Tiptree Award was announced on March 22nd.

I can't find a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ link.

They Will Dream In The Garden - written by Gabriela Damian Miravete

More info can be found at tiptree.org.

This is a translated short story. It was translated by Adrian Demopulos. The synopsis sounds interesting so I might try to read it this weekend.

Crikey - I've only just seen .

We’ve spent the last month deep in discussion about the name of this award. We’ve listened to your feedback, reflected on our own assumptions and commitments, and we have decided that it’s time for the name to change.

The Tiptree Award is becoming the Otherwise Award.

As far as I can make out there's been criticism because Tiptree and her husband died in a suicide pact when their health started failing, but now some critics are suggesting that it was murder-suicide, with Tiptree murdering her husband because he was disabled.

The 2019 Otherwise Award winner was announced on April 11th.

Freshwater by Akwaeke Emezi

The synopsis does sound interesting but I have heard this novel described as magical realism and that style typically does not work well for me.

There is also an Honor List of nine additional works. This can be looked at as a recommended reading list for the award.

I've still got 40 winners to go before I start on the also-rans!

But my average rating for the winners of the Otherwise at the moment is 3 stars, so I don't know if I'd really want to do extra reading for them.

The 2020 Otherwise Award was awarded to Oghenechovwe Donald Ekpeki for the novella Ife-Iyoku, the Tale of Imadeyunuagbon . It can be found in Dominion: An Anthology of Speculative Fiction from Africa and the African Diaspora.

I looked up the book and it does look interesting. I might pick it up. I do like anthologies because I can usually read a story every night or two along with my other reading.

The Otherwise Award has been put on hold. The last award announced was for 2021 and they haven't done one since. At this point it looks like they are not sure about how they are going to move forward. You can read about it on their website under the 'News' tab.

Oh shame - it's always tricky when you're only volunteers and you just don't have the resources.

I don't think the Otherwise winners have been my favourites so far, but I hope they manage to go on. Some are very interesting.

From the Otherwise Award website:

Hi, everyone! The Otherwise Award has been on a pause lately; during that pause, we on the motherboard have been discussing ways to update the award, improving various things about the way that it works while staying connected to the roots and tradition of the award.

There's much more info on the website. Looks like the 2022 and 2023 awards are still on hold. They're starting work on the 2024 award focusing more on a short list of works rather than one specific work.

Best of luck to them, I hope they manage to find the time and resources to make it work.

Tentatively, I'd be inclined not to read an honours list in this group. Maybe only read the winners up to 2021 and then think about a new award to include after we finally read through the backlist?

Not that I don't find the Otherwise awards interesting - but I wouldn't want to read 6 Otherwise winners per year, when all our other awards just get 1 winner!

I would not want to read an honours list - unless one appears on another list. It feels like they would be forcing themselves to find worthy novels - when I am sure that isn't correct.

Agreed. A single winner and I'm still in. An honours/honorable mention list, not so much.

Yup, plenty of awards to choose from.

The 2024 Otherwise Award winners have been announced. It looks like they went with multiple works instead of just one.

Rakesfall by Vajra Chandrasekera
Walking Practice by Dolki Min, translated by Victoria Caudle
In Universes by Emet North
Kiss of Life by P.C. Verrone found in Fiyah, Winter 2024

There is also a long list on the Otherwise Award website.
