Please read the rules for nominating BEFORE you create your post!! And check our bookshelves to be sure you are not nominating something we have already read as a group!

The categories for March and April are:

March - a book written by a woman

April - a short story collection

If you nominate the book, and the book is chosen as a group read, you agree to lead the discussion for that month! Don't worry, it's not hard, and we'll love you all the more for it!

Please do not nominate a book more than once. A book can only be voted on once, so multiple nominations within this thread are not counted.

Only ONE nomination per month per person.

Please be sure to post the title, author, and the month you are nominating it for.

Ideally, you can type it as follows -
August - Room - Emma Donoghue

If your post does not have those three things, it will not be counted.

Are you ready?

I'll accept nominations through the 10th. If we get tons of nominations, I may pull the plug on it a little early, so get them in as soon as you can!

Once I close nominations I will create the polls and let you know when it is time to vote!

Hit us with your best noms!

**Important note: At no time is it acceptable for an author to nominate one of his/her own books for the monthly group read. Likewise, it is not acceptable to "push" nominations or votes within this group. "A nomination for a nomination" is also not acceptable. If I suspect a push, or inappropriate actions have taken place within the group read nominations or votes, I reserve the right to deem those nominations or votes as ineligible.

Keith Zytowski (kalexanderz) | 1 comments March - Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
"The novel takes place in Nigeria during the Nigerian Civil War. The effect of the war is shown through the dynamic relationships of five people’s lives including: Ugwu, a thirteen-year-old houseboy who works for Odenigbo, a university professor full of revolutionary zeal; Olanna, the professor’s beautiful young mistress who has abandoned her life in Lagos for a dusty town and her lover’s charm; and Richard, a shy young Englishman infatuated with Olanna’s willful twin sister Kainene. And in case you were wondering, yes, the author is the woman whose Ted Talk on Feminism was sampled by Beyoncé for the song 'Flawless.' View her inspiring lecture ."

April - The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Other Stories (Barnes & Noble Classic Edition) by Robert Louis Stevenson
"Idealistic young scientist Henry Jekyll struggles to unlock the secrets of the soul. Testing chemicals in his lab, he drinks a mixture he hopes will isolate—and eliminate—human evil. Instead it unleashes the dark forces within him, transforming him into the hideous and murderous Mr. Hyde. Resonant with psychological perception and ethical insight, Stevenson’s novella is recognized as an incisive study of Victorian morality and sexual repression, as well as a great thriller. This collection also includes some of the author’s grimmest short fiction: 'Lodging for the Night,' 'The Suicide Club,' 'Thrawn Janet,' 'The Body Snatcher,' and 'Markheim.'

Olivia (oliviah_) April: Moral Disorder and Other Stories by Margaret Atwood

Moral Disorder and Other Stories by Margaret Atwood

In Moral Disorder she has created a series of interconnected stories that trace the course of a life and also the lives intertwined with it--those of parents, of siblings, of children, of friends, of enemies, of teachers, and even of animals. As in a photograph album, time is measured in sharp, clearly observed moments. The '30s, the '40s, the '50s, the '60s, the '70s, the '80s, the '90s, and the present --all are here. The settings vary: large cities, suburbs, farms, northern forests.

Mario, the books have already been chosen. Maybe you can get nominations in when we open back up in April.

Barbara (barbarahagerty) | 7 comments It's been a while since I've participated, but I'm really excited to jump back in for April's book and read Moral Disorder! I'm a big Atwood fan, and it's one of the few that I haven't read. I'm a short story lover, but I'm picky. I like them tight, literate, well crafted, and a pleasure to read, whether they're comedic, or deadly serious. Atwood always seems to get it right. I'm looking forward to reading with the group again!
