I finished and have moved on to Furthermore by Tahereh Mafi as my 'book involving travel'. After that, I am excited to read Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates for 'a book by a person of color', as well as in honor of Black History Month. It comes highly recommended by a respected friend.

Ugh I hate that. I admit I have several books still in my "currently reading" because I'm having such a hard time finishing. I've been 'reading' the Tale of Genji for something like 4 months now. I can only get through a couple pages at a time, it's SO DRY. But it is the first novel, so it's not like there were editors and beta readers back then.

I just joined this challenge as I'm looking for something get me off my usual track of reading badly written, trashy romance novels. Don't get me wrong: I love them, but I used to cherish beautiful crafted novels with rich, narrative descriptions, complex characters, and plots that were well thought out. So, to ease myself back into the slightly more cerebral, and because I'm a stick in the mud and will probably end up going through the list in order, I just started reading Nuts by Alice Clayton. And yes, it was actually recommended by a librarian, even though it's a steamy romance novel. I keep laughing out loud as I read this book: the narrator's inner voice is so honest, clever, and rapier-witted that it's an absolute pleasure to read, and you can really tell that the author has done her research as it relates to the character's occupations and the geographical area in which the book is set. I'm only a few chapters in, and this book is a breath of fresh air!

I promised myself that I would put down books that weren't carrying me away this year. I often force myself to finish everything I pick up, and I feel like it's causing me to miss out on things I would enjoy so much more, so I'm allowing myself some DNFs this year. For some reason, I still chose to finish CoFA. I mean, it was alright. I just really wanted to see if the author would stop with the will they/won't they. Needless to say, I didn't get the answer I was hoping for.

I get that, but some of it for me is trying to broaden the scope of what I read. So I keep poking at Tale of Genji, reading a few pages every couple days. Mostly because it was the first novel, and it was written by a woman. It feels like there's historical significance there, which keeps me poking at it.
Sometimes it's also out of spite. I hate when people say they "hate" stuff they don't even try. So, for instance, I read the first 50 Shades book, even though it was awful. Now I can SAY it was awful and not just assume it.

I'm in the same boat of "I should branch out more", but at the same time, there are SO MANY books and only so many years left in my life.

This thread in particular is mostly the Popsugar reading challenge, and for me some Read Harder thrown in because I'm doing them both. But you're welcome to just check in with what you're reading anyhow, even if you're not actually doing a challenge :)

Ah ok, I see. I was just doing the Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ self-challenge (set your own goal) to get myself back to reading on the regular, rather than in random spurts.

I did make the overall title "book challenge" not just popsugar or whatever. So you're more than welcome to just update your progress on the general goodreads challenge!

This is the first time I've really let myself walk away from books. I won't lie...it feels wrong. But it also feels pretty good. I can definitely understand wanting to work on Tale of the Genji. I may have to give it a shot myself.

It's not an awful book or anything, just extremely dry and kind of slow. You can find digital versions for cheap. Maybe check reviews though, mines formatting is messed up, none of the footnotes are linked properly.
