Rachel It only took me a day to read Of Mice and Men, but I am blown away by Steinbeck's writing.

Here is my review:

5 out of 5 stars

Of Mice and Men is a beautifully written story of two simple hard working men during the depression. The friendship between George and Lennie is a friendship that is more like brothers. It is a very quick read, and Steinbeck depicts the time of the depression wonderfully. The books ends sadly, but the events connect in a poignant way. I highly recommend reading any of Steinbeck's work.

What did you guys think of the book?

Danielle (ramblingbooks) | 57 comments I have never participated in our monthly reads because I've never had time, but I am making time for it now!

I have had Of Mice and Men sitting on my bookshelf unread for years, so it is about time I get to it. I cannot wait to discuss it with everyone.

Also, Rachel, I couldn't help but notice in your profile picture you are wearing a Dallas Stars jersey, I am a huge hockey fan as well, though I am a Panthers fan :)

Lauren (letaylor13) | 4 comments I wasn't sure what to expect from Of Mice and Men. We hadn't studied it at school and I had only a rough idea what it was about because Sawyer mentioned it on the show Lost.
I actually really enjoyed it, I loved Lenny in particular and I really felt for him throughout the story.

Yes, I am a hockey fan. Got into it more this past year. My bf love of hockey rubbed off on me. I am cheering for the NY Rangers in the Stanley Cup.

I remembered Sawyer mentioning this book in Lost as well. That would be really cool to find a list of all the books Sawyer read while trapped on the island. Right now, the play is being performed on Broadway with James Franco, and the entire time reading it I wondered who he was playing, and wondered how he was protraying his character. I agree Lenny is an easy character to fall for in the story.

I read East of Eden this past Spring semester in school and I fell in love with the beautiful language of Steinbeck and this book was no exception.

I had never read Of Mice and Men and was excited when I saw this on our list for the year! I love that Steinbeck picked two very different men to show various aspects of the plight of men who essentially became migrant workers scrounging for whatever job they could get. Lennie is so adorable, simple and easy to sympathize with and George provides the contrast with his straight forward way he approaches their situation and through his constant care of Lennie. Their friendship really made this story. I could read it again and again.

I find myself becoming a devoted fan of Steinbeck thanks to this book and East of Eden. :)

Shriya (gautamshriya) | 12 comments Read it last year in May, I think, amidst the hectic days of writing my dissertation. Here's my review:

Sophie | 5 comments I remember lots of people at school studying this but my class was assigned something else. I had a good idea of what the story was and knew how it would end. Beautifully written but the misogyny left a bad taste in my mouth.

Amanda Siminger | 5 comments I read this in one day, and I was amazed at how much it is a good book for anyone to read now, and I think that this book can show how divided the country has always been, and may continue to be. I'm trying to be optimistic about change for everyone in the country, but I think that this is a good teaching tool for showing acceptance for others. I was surprised to find out, through google, that this book is banned for the language and treatment that everyone is and has been exposed to in various forms.
