Hey all, week 11 check in!

This week I finished We Were Liars for my popsugar unreliable narrator prompt. It was pretty good, although the main character annoyed me. I felt some sympathy for her life situation, but less so for how the book portrayed her and her family. It was a fast read, anyhow.

I also read:

Garden Spells which I don't think counts for a challenge. It was a short sweet read though.

Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly for a book about food. Anthony Bourdain kinda seems like a jerk, but at least he acknowledges it. I liked it more than I thought I would.

I am currently reading:

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe which I am listening to as an audio book. Cyd recommended it on a different topic. It's narrated by Lin Manuel Miranda, which is cool. I like it so far, only on part 2 though.

The Shining for my book set in a hotel. I'm enjoying it more than the other King books i've read. Never actually watched the movie, but it's so ingrained in pop culture I know bits and pieces of it. Kind of interesting piecing it together from the parts I know to where they fit in the book.

I thought about reading We We Liars, but I'm more or less going through the list in order and I have my next few books already checked out of the library/purchased, so I didn't jump ahead. So..with that in mind:

I finished reading The Neverending Story as my book that's a story within a story. What a surprise that was! I grew up watching (and loving the movie) and had no idea that the movie (slight spoilers ahead) only covers half the book! The second half of the book is Bastion in Fantastica. I had no idea. I'm really glad I read it, but I didn't particularly love it. It reminded me of some works by Margaret Atwood where the story is an allegory and not a very subtle one. Plus, Bastian can be a very unlikable character at times.

I'm currently reading The Illegal as my book by a person of colour. (I had to back track on the reading list as it was on the library waitlist). I'm only about 60 pages in, but--without getting into the politics--it's an incredible relevant book that tackles issues of refugees and illegal immigrants in a post-colonial era in the fictional country of Freedomland. Also, the main character is a marathoner, so it's inspiring me to go out and do some running again!

I've also started I Could Pee on This And Other Poems by Cats as my book with a cat on the cover. It came in the mail yesterday and I couldn't resist cracking it open. Every poem is an homage to living with cats and their "unique character traits," heh.

I've also started reading Lemons to Lemonade: Resolving Problems in Meetings, Workshops, and Plcs as a book with career advice. This might be a bit of a stretch, but I do have to facilitate meetings with disgruntled people all. the. time., so it's actually a great read for my own professional development, so I think that counts, yes?
