What did you think of it? Favorite or least favorite characters? Favorite or least favorite part?

Suzanne Casamento I LOVED this book! The writing is amazing and the characters are so real. It's such a heartbreaking story - but so important. My favorite part was when Hailey tried to wiggle her way back into Starr's world and Starr was not having it.

Daniiii Star is by far my fav character. She just feels so real like someone I know. King is my least fav because he so ughhhh, and he's not even in the book that much. This book was everythingggg seriously it deserves all the hype.

Yolanda I absolutely loved this book!

Chapter 1 and Chapter 23 had me rolling. Starr, Seven, DeVonte and Chris's conversation in the car about race was so hilarious.

It is hard to pin point one character that was my favorite. But I love how supportive Chris was. DeVonte was funny. And by the end of the book the only character that I just couldn't stand was King. He was always messing things up. I would have enjoyed if King would have been penalized for his actions more through out the story but I guess the lack of punishment through out the story made the ending more acceptable.

Through out the book there were sad and tragic moment but there were large gaps in between those moments. When things were going good for the characters I was constantly on the edge of my seat thinking that something was going to go wrong. I was so happy for the family when they finally had the chance to move. I was so scared that everyone wasn't going to make it to the new neighborhood.

Marlene Young | 9 comments This book is written in order to give us a broad view of what worlds Starr has to survive in. It helps anyone get hooked on the story line. Diversity! Yes! More books on diverse cultures and underrepresented racial groups! 'Eleanor and Park' was the first YA book that I read that featured an Asian lead character. That's what I mean by underrepresented. It's not that we don't exist, right? Publishers have to be willing to take on a book with characters from multicultural backgrounds.

Although I'm from Hawaii, this book has many parallels to divisions within our racial, cultural, socio-economic and ethnic groups here. Pres. Obama attended the most prestigious private school in Honolulu. He had to deal with racial, ethnic and other types of discrimination as Hawaii is not the cultural melting pot that's described in tourism brochures. As I am one year older than Pres. Obama, and I attended a Honolulu private school (not as prestigious as Punahou), I can sort of understand the groups he was assumed to have fallen into. Luckily, I was also able to leave the islands to explore broader horizons. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't listen to NPR, where I first heard about this book.

There are a lot of other things to say about this book. It's so multifaceted that I don't know where to begin. I'm just thankful to the author!!

hedda (heddiling) | 20 comments This is by far the best book I've read so far this year! The characters were so realistic, as was the plot and ending.

Kujuria | 2 comments I loved this book! It made me laugh, cry, and left me on edge. I found myself trying to find other books by the author only to be upset ....there's none! Star was an amazing character, one that showed so much strength!

Grey Channing I've just picked this book up! I'm currently on chapter four. Starr is right now, by far, my favorite character. She's engaging and relatable and she actually reminded me of one of my best friends. I think Khalil was set to be one of my favorites too, his dynamic with Starr was the best, and chapter two had me devastated!!

A poignant moment for me was in the very beginning of Chapter Two (view spoiler)

This book has already had me laughing, nearly crying, and deeply touched and disappointed -- and I'm only four chapters in! I'm looking forward to more for sure.

Andrea (muthoniandy) | 11 comments Starr is by far my favourite in this book and King is the worst. My favourite part is when Starr's father gets upset that she has a white boyfriend and thinks he hasn't been a good model for black men to her and she goes like duh! You've set an example for what a man should be (not just a black one). I don't know why but l just loved that.

Girlwiththeglasses | 22 comments I'm not even half way through and ai'm already in love with it! Starr is such a strong character and rich in personality. The plot is beautifully weaved- Angie Thomas is amazing with words!

The Bookaholic (deterioratingbookaholic) I'd say Angie Thomas did an excellent job for a debut novel. It was a really touching and amazing book. I was reluctant at first to read this, but I was pleasantly surprised by the plot, story, characters and how well she wove the story together. hats off

Kaseadillla | 12 comments Just read this recently. I really enjoyed it. I read Jodi' Piccoult's Small Great Things, similar impact but I felt The Hate U Give was more powerful because it left the cimematic-like drama out of it. Felt more real, so I was more engaged.

Ally Power (allyaidk) | 12 comments I read this book like maybe a month ago and I already want to read it again and again. It's so good! It's so well written and it's just such a powerful novel in my opinion. My favourite characters have to br Starr (obviously), DeVonte and Big Mav. Obviously King is one of my least favourites, but Hailey (I'm hoping that's the right girl because both their names are escaping me at the moment) was probably one of my all time least favourite characters. I feel like she just accurately represented those sorts of people who claim not to be racist because they have friends of different races, but then are very highkey racist to their friends faces. All the parts with Chris and Starr are honestly my favourite parts because they were just so cute! I wasn't sure if I was rooting for Chris and Starr at first, but by like the dance scene they became my ultimate OTP. While I doubt we'll ever get a sequel (and I don't care because I absolutely loved where the story ended), I hope Angie Thomas writes more novels soon.

Michelle (wanderlustreader) I love this book so much! It is so true and revealing. Almost as if grabbed my eyelids and ripped them open, forcing me to see the entire world out there, beautiful or not. This book was powerful, informative, and mind-blowing. It also includes a perfect balance between the protagonists and the antagonists, as of the real world. Everything I need in a book is collected into one. What a great read.

Elysse (compulsivereadersblog) | 2 comments I LOVED this book - it's inspired me to write a YA novel about an interracial couple, from the white perspective. There's SO MUCH there! I think that, as a white person, this opened my eyes so much to the every day privileges that a white person has in this country, and how wildly unfair our country is to black Americans. I am hoping to explore more of this privilege in my writing, and continue the dialogue!

Brooke I haven't yet finished this ook but so far I'm living it star has to be my favourite so far

Farren (mmmcookies) | 306 comments I honestly had no interest in this book when it came out and didn't have plans to pick it up. The cover gave me the idea that the whole book was going to be protesting, but it's actually such a small portion of the book. I'm happy I gave the book a shot and I think Angie wrote a very impressive debut novel. I loved all of the characters (with the exception of King of course but his character was still much needed) but Starr was my favorite.

Are you guys excited for the movie? The cast is great, but I'm bummed that the guy from Riverdale is playing Chris. I always hear about what an ugly person he is on the inside so I don't like the idea of him playing such a warmhearted character.

Khristina Chess (khristina_chess) This book was powerful and engrossing. Starr is a rich character with a wonderful conflict and a world that comes alive on the page. I look forward to more novels from this author!

Thestuffednotebook | 2 comments Loved the book! This is why I love reading so much. Such a great way to spread awareness! Starr was a super likable character and you could really feel her struggles throughout the book.
Can't wait to read the authors new book "On the Come Up", but unfortunately it hasn't been published in Danish yet...

Tamara (chronicbookaholic) I bought this last week after watching the trailer. It's going to be the next one I read after I finish the current one I'm reading. So excited to get into it!

Nikki Sojkowski (nikkisoj) | 873 comments I'm about halfway through right now and I love how powerful and moving this story is. Especially the contrast of what she thought she would do if ever placed into this situation compared to what she's currently capable of doing.

Still need to read this one. 😂

Rachael Arsenault I just finished reading this book and it was absolutely phenomenal! Brilliant writing and extremely well-written, dynamic characters. I just wish i hadn't been reading it on break at work for some scenes. Really awkward to be fighting back tears in the breakroom.

William (willie3838) | -1 comments This is by far the best book that I have read. It's a ticket to an emotional roller coaster ride. You'll be laughing your butt off on one page, crying on the other, and sometimes you'll be doing them both simultaneously! Not only that, the characters are honestly amazing. You get to see two different worlds that represent reality today. As a teen, it was pretty cool to know that an adult is still up-to-date with the nae-nae and daps ;)
