I haven't been able to find a good insect/bug ID app. I'd think with 300 lbs of bug for every pound of human, there would be a lot. I found several that might work, but none look particularly easy nor comprehensive.
Butterfly & Insect Collector:
Forest Insect Pests:
NPMA Field Guide:
Aqua Bugs:

NASA's app looks pretty neat.
Each state seems to have an app for 'wild flowers' which include bushes, vines, & more. Kentucky's is here:
I also got one for Ohio & Tennessee.
The University of Missouri has one for IDing weeds.
North Carolina Forest Service has a tree ID app.
There are a lot of apps for IDing birds. Cornell has 2.
eBird:
Merlin:
Does anyone know the difference between them?
Audubon has one, too.
Whew! Lots to look at. I'd love some guidance so I don't waste time on bad ones.

It looks really neat, like an encyclopedia on steroids."
Yes, it is. It also seems like a Star Trek Computer. Sorry I've seen your answer so late, goodreads didn't notify me :(

Have you tried Merlin? I have both on my phone, can't say I've fiddled with either, though. Actually, I'm finding very little to do with it save occasionally google something while out in the shop & take photos. My Leica camera is better at that, though.
My kids just gave us their old Android phones (mine is a Galaxy S5) & I've heard there is an app for just about everything. I've found a number of interesting ones for astronomy, physics, & the identification of various things. What have you tried & what do you love? Hate?
