Laura | 9707 comments Hey everyone, welcome to Towers V.
I'm Laura. I 'll be your captain and maria helena will be your co -captain. I 'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I can be found frequently on GR when not at work! I love reading, camping, kayaking and bowling. My favorite genres are mystery, YA and historical fiction though I have been known to read almost anything! I look forward to reading with you all!

maria helena (mariahel) | 1905 comments Hi team!

I'm maria helena (or MH for short). I'm originally from Sweden but live in Iceland. Like Laura, I spend a lot of time on GR :-)

I'm a big fan of crime novels (especially Nordic crime). I'm also addicted to booklists, statistics and spreadsheets. And cheese, I love cheese.

No, I think we will be fine with just yours :-)

message 14: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 1199 comments I'm excited to attempt my first group challenge! I live in Dallas TX and work from home, so when I'm not traveling for work (about 2 weeks/month) I sneak in a few pages throughout the day (shhh...don't tell the boss!). I also try to read each evening instead of watching TV, and I definitely read a lot on airplanes.

I love historical fiction (especially from the WWII era), mysteries, and thrillers. I'm not a huge reader of romance, sci-fi or dystopian, but I'm not opposed to them.

When I'm not reading or working, I can be found with a wineglass in my hand, planning my next vacation (even if it is fictional!) or trying out a new recipe.

MelanieJoy (ladybird11) | 1363 comments Hi Team!

I've been creeping on GR all day at work to see when our thread would be open! I've been pretty hyped about this challenge. It's my first Towers challenge :)

I go by Melanie, Mel, or MelanieJoy (pick your flavor of the week!) I was born in Louisiana, USA, but I've lived in many places, and currently live in California. I can be frequently found on GR during the work week (don't tell my boss!) but I'm mysteriously absent on weekends. I love reading, hanging with friends, making music, and doing lots of socializing and things with my church friends. I'm also outdoors hiking or just enjoying the sun when I can. My favorite genre is Fantasy, but I also like non fiction, humor, romance, and some mysteries when I buddy read with MH or when she tells me a book is too good to pass up :P.

I'm really excited to be on Team Han Solo and get to know all of you! It's also great to be reunited with MH, Megan, and Ozana from Wobble Team Dire Wolves!

Tower Teams is a great team challenge to start with because it is quite relaxed and there's a lot of freedom in what you can read. Beware though, it is a slippery slope... Soon you'll be addicted to team challenges (and the months between them can be brutal...)

Ooh...Can you recommend any good Nordic crime novels, Maria Helena? It's a genre I've been curious about.

maria helena (mariahel) | 1905 comments Amanda wrote: "Ooh...Can you recommend any good Nordic crime novels, Maria Helena? It's a genre I've been curious about."

Oh my, where to start... I could write a several page long list for you.

I'm partial to Scandinavian/Nordic Noir so let's start with those...
- I always recommend the 10 books in the Story of a Crime series (more commonly known as the Martin Beck books) by Sjöwahl & Wahlöö. They are classics and often credited with pioneering a new style within Nordic crime mysteries, so they are definitely a must read. The first book from 1965 is called Roseanna but they can be read out of order.
- Henning Mankell's series about Wallander (starting with Faceless Killers) is also amazing. It is another kind of dark and gritty series.
- The most recent one (and one of my all-time favourites) and the one most people have heard of is of course Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy / The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (but don't get me started about the horrible translation of the title)
- Another all-time favourite that I always recommend is Snow Angels by James Thompson.

Some other contemporary, and a little less hardboiled crime, that I highly recommend are:
- The Hypnotist by Lars Kepler (the entire series is spectacular)
- Spring Tide by Cilla & Rolf Börjlind
- The Ice Princess by Camilla Läckberg
- Ashes to Dust by Yrsa Sigurðardóttir

Those all sound great! I know what I'll be reading for a while. ;)

I saw the Wallander t.v. show with Kenneth Branagh and loved it. I'm sure I will love the books as well.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Romina (romii) | 306 comments Hi! I have been anxiously awaiting for this thread to open!

Im Romina, 23 and from Uruguay (I should mention that my keyboard is in spanish so I will never use apostrophes..just fyi! Im not lazy, I just dont have the key!)
I enjoy reading obviously and am currently on a journey to a healthier lifestyle! Eating well(or better than before at least) and exercising are two of my main goals right now.

I have a lot of free time right now so I hope to get lots of reading done! Favorite genre would probably be crime, specially murder/serial killer novels..Every few books I will also read something completely different or chicklit/contemporary romance just to have a bit of a balance! Really I will read almost anything, If I like the story line thats it!

Hope to get to know you guys better and have a good time!

Wow everyone, lots more crime readers in this group than I've seen in the past!

message 24: by maria helena (new)

maria helena (mariahel) | 1905 comments I'm so excited there are so many crime readers on the team! (Although it might be dangerous for my tbr list. It's been out of control lately and I'm really trying hard to skim it down a bit...)

I'll have to make a note of your list! I've read the Steig Larsson trilogy and loved it. I have several books by Jo Nesbo on my shelves but haven't read any of them yet. What is your opinion on those?

maria helena (mariahel) | 1905 comments Romina wrote: "I should mention that my keyboard is in spanish so I will never use apostrophes..just fyi! Im not lazy, I just dont have the key!"

I completely understand you! I switch between a US keyboard, Icelandic and Swedish (and sometimes I don't notice that I'm on the wrong one) and I end up with the letters not in English/letters in the wrong places. I usually try and proofread my posts, but especially when I'm in a hurry or tired, I sometimes miss the errors...

(Let's not even mention the troubles I get into when I post from my phone and autocorrect is on the wrong language...)

message 27: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 1199 comments I'm learning Spanish right now. I took 4 semesters of it years ago in college, but decided now was a good time to study it and eventually become fluent. I go through workbooks to relearn the various vocabulary words and verb conjugations a few minutes a day, and later this year I plan to enroll in immersion courses to get better at speaking it.

Haha MH that's awesome! I try to text some friends in Spanish but autocorrect is always set to english so I have to carefully type out each word. But my computer for some reason has my keyboard language set to spanish.

Wow Brooke, that's really neat! If you ever want to converse in Spanish just message me :)

Also Brooke, you like WW2 fiction and mysteries? I'm reading one right now called The Girl from Venice. I'm only 20% into it but it might be something you would enjoy. It's set in Italy towards the end of WW2.

I've read all of the Harry Hole series (and some of his other books). They are ok, but not my favourite. I have a soft spot for the miserable, non-likable detective so Harry Hole should fit the bill, but I'm not quite sure why I don't like them more than I do.

If you liked Stieg Larsson, you should definitely try Snow Angels! If you like it, there are 3 more books in the series.

I took Spanish for 4 years (and German for 2) and the only thing I remember is how to count from 1 to 10...

I'm learning Icelandic now, but it is going a bit slow. I can read it (and write some) but talking is a lot harder.

Sorry for the wait, I was at work and I'm so jealous that you all are able to sneak on GR during the day! I can check in on my lunch break but not again until I get home from work. No mini peeks for me. As a reference its 939pm here. You will find me on GR in the evening and weekends!
I'm so excited for our challenge to start. What is everyone currently reading?
I am reading Alice (The Chronicles of Alice, #1) by Christina Henry . Amanda read it in a previous team challenge and I've wanted to read it since!

I love all fiction (not such a fan of non fiction) and my favorites are mysteries, thrillers and historical fiction.

I participated in Wobble - but this is my first Tower Teams- super excited and looking forward to getting to know you all!

Romina (romii) | 306 comments Ah I feel the need to answer to so many posts already but I'm on my phone in bed so I will do that in the morning when I can quote you all!

As for what I'm reading right now, Inferno by Dan Brown. I love the Robert Langdon series.

message 45: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 1199 comments My current reads are all over the board right now. I'm listening to Settle for More on audio when working out or in the car more than 20 min. I'm reading The Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story, but it turned out to be a little more dry than I expected, so I also started Fool. And I'm reading The Picture of Dorian Gray on my Kindle. No one can tell me I only read one genre! :P

It is added to my TBR! My favorite WW2 fiction novels so far have been The Nightingale, All the Light We Cannot See, and The Invisible Bridge because they show different perspectives.

maria helena wrote: "I took Spanish for 4 years (and German for 2) and the only thing I remember is how to count from 1 to 10...

That's funny. I took 3 years of French in high school before the 2 years of Spanish in college. When I try to speak Spanish now, French comes out. And when I was in France last month and tried to speak French, Spanish would come out. It was sooooo frustrating!! A) I have no idea why my brain works like that. B) I didn't think I remembered anything from French class!
