Aishik Biswas | 1 comments It is a well-known saying that books are a man’s best friend, and it is books, which have often shaped big ideas, and even transformed into a revolution. Today, I would like to mention about some books, which have played an integral role in inspiring me to take up science and seek a career in research. The first book, I have in mind is definitely Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time. The journey through the cosmos with the backdrop of a terminally ill genius, and his struggle against all odds, was definitely inspiring and had a lasting impression during my formative years. Another lesser known book, which I must mention is Walter Lewin’s “For the Love of Physics. It is a real treat to read, and touches upon the wonders of physics, like very few have managed. Today, I want to share with all the book lovers on this site, the true story of my classmate Amit Jha, and would like to reach out to the readers, to help him fulfill his long cherished dream.

Right from his childhood, Amit has always been inclined towards science and mathematics, and possesses a rare hunger to fathom the intricacies of nature, and unearth the principles behind different machines. When he finally got the chance to pursue his love: engineering, in university, he did so wholeheartedly and has been able to maintain an extremely strong and consistent academic record, throughout the past four years. He is also a former president and a founder member of the Techno India SPIE Student Chapter. In his capacity as a SPIE Student member and chapter officer, he has worked relentlessly for the upliftment of this chapter, and has supervised and guided the research and outreach activities of the chapter with utmost diligence.

I am pleased to let you know that a paper co-authored by Amit, has been accepted for oral presentation at the prestigious SPIE Optics+Photonics 2017 conference to be held from 6-10 August, at San Diego, CA, USA. The title of the paper is, “Analysis of photonic spot profile converter and bridge structure on SOI platform for horizontal and vertical integration (link: ). This project is a part of an emerging and very exciting field known as integrated optics: the optical analogue of integrated electronics. In the present research, two new integrated optics circuits: known as the spot profile converter, required for horizontal light coupling and the bridge structure, to be used for vertical integration, both to be made on the high-index contrast SOI platform, have been proposed. These structures can soon find its way into commercialization via patent and fabricated in large-scale, for various sensing and photonic applications.

In laymen terms, the spot profile converter gradually narrows down an incident beam of light, and is able to ultimately confine light in a distance of the order of a nanometre, something unthinkable otherwise. How does it manage to this? This is achieved by designing the structure in a tapered manner, with decreasing thickness on a horizontal plane and finally adding a nano-scale wide slot, resulting in a significant rise in intensity, something which is very desirable in sensing applications. This slot is them filled with a bio-chemical sample which is to be analysed using the high intense light(similar to a microscope). This explains the horizontal coupling, but as we know, in order to fabricate a structure, we need to integrate both in the horizontal and vertical directions. This has been done by proposing a structure resembling a bridge (hence the name: bridge structure). The bridge structure can be used for optical signal routing in the field of optical communication.

In order that the paper gets published in the Proceedings of SPIE, Amit will have to travel to the US and present the paper. Coming from an economically challenged background, the question of self-funding doesn't arise. To make matters worse, his institute hasn't agreed to fund the trip as well. At this point of time, the situation is pretty gloomy, and there is no real saviour in sight. Being his close friends, we cannot bear to see his dream of presenting the paper be prematurely crushed. Thus, we would like to request the highly educated authors and readers on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to donate any amount found suitable by you, towards this noble cause of helping Amit overcome his financial shortcomings and present his paper at the conference. You can donate directly through our fundraiser campaign: .
Thank you once again for all the love and support.
