This book fits the tag because it was awarded Best Book For Young Adults in 2003 by the American Library Association and Book Sense Book Of The Year 2004 (paperback).
This is the story of Lily Owens and Rosaleen, her stand in mother. Lily is accompanying Rosaleen into town so she can register to vote. This leads to a confrontation that results in their arrest. Lily helps Rosaleen escape police custody at the hospital and they head to Tiburon. Lily and Rosaleen end up at the home of the Boatwright sisters, where Lily learns beekeeping from August. During this time Lily becomes aware of the very real effects of racism. Her eyes are opened to the racial divide in the south in the 1960's. She also learns some hard truths about her mother.

I read this, but probably wouldn't have given it an award (or voted for it to win). I know that this new thing is for the reviewer, but thought of this when reading Chili's review.

Karin, it doesn't have to just be the reviewer who gives their opinion - - any reader can chime in! It's funny because this book was all the rage the year that it came out, but I thought it was pretty much ho hum and gave it three stars. Enjoyable, but nothing special. Oddly, reading Chili's summary - - none of it is coming back to me at.all!

I definitely enjoyed this when I read it, but that was 20 years ago. Who knows what I would think if I read it now. I think that's true to a bar 2008, 2009, 2010 high notes. We're different people now who have grown in these decades. I loved the book then. Funny how life moves us forward. New times and new things.

This was a favorite of mine the year I read it and made me open to many more by Sue Monk Kidd. I'm more surprised that it won award for being a young adult book because I didn't think it was young adult book as much as it was coming of age (which I think can be above YA in interest).

I remember some things about it, but it was not my cup of tea nor did I think it spectacular.
