I thought Whoopi won, but I guess that was for Ghost. Oops.

I definitely need to re-read this one. It's strange because I'm quite sure I read it, but I must have been so young that my recollection is very, very hazy. Sounds like an excellent read from your very positive review.

Lol, I've never heard of this, but I'm intrigued. Any chance it would make a good book club book? I'm in charge of narrowing down the choices to three, and so far I have one ([book:The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). Looking for a diverse group to select from, but a lot of the people in my club complain we never read anything upbeat.

Anita, I read the Diving Bell and the Butterfly and I loved it. The movie is also very good. I think that book would make a great book club pick.

But that didn't detract from the beauty that is Celie, Shug, Sophia and Nettie, as well as the love that finally grows when Celie accepts, forgives, and moves on. This book still has one of my favorite endings.
It won the Pulitzer and the National Book Award, and was made into an Oscar winning movie, and is on the 1001 list.
I feel it deserves all the accolades, because Alice Walker not only wrote a beautiful and timeless story of forgiveness, she also brought attention to issues that she felt, and still feels, are important and worthy of attention and action. And she did so in a simple and elegant style.
