Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments There is so much to love and so much to hate in this book. Since I have been reading more diversely lately, there was a lot that I noticed this time that I hadn't before, thus, much more to hate than the last time: the racism and abuse were abhorrent.
But that didn't detract from the beauty that is Celie, Shug, Sophia and Nettie, as well as the love that finally grows when Celie accepts, forgives, and moves on. This book still has one of my favorite endings.
It won the Pulitzer and the National Book Award, and was made into an Oscar winning movie, and is on the 1001 list.
I feel it deserves all the accolades, because Alice Walker not only wrote a beautiful and timeless story of forgiveness, she also brought attention to issues that she felt, and still feels, are important and worthy of attention and action. And she did so in a simple and elegant style.

Agree that the book deserves all the accolades. (And the movie, too)

I thought Whoopi won, but I guess that was for Ghost. Oops.

I definitely need to re-read this one. It's strange because I'm quite sure I read it, but I must have been so young that my recollection is very, very hazy. Sounds like an excellent read from your very positive review.

JoLene (trvl2mtns) | 1532 comments I have this on audio --- I did start to listen to it, but it didn't grab me. I do need to try again.

Tracy (tstan) | 1261 comments I thought it was reflective, hopeful, and upbeat. She finds humor and philosophy from her "ladies". I think it would make a great book club book- short, too!

Anita, I read the Diving Bell and the Butterfly and I loved it. The movie is also very good. I think that book would make a great book club pick.
