DianeMP | 534 comments Geraldine Brooks is my favorite author. I have always enjoyed reading a well told story, and Ms. Brooks always delivers. For her efforts, she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for March in 2005.
The story centers around the long absent father of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. Each chapter begins with a letter to his family back East, exchanging lighthearted news. Following the letter Mr. March tells a much different story to the reader. The year is 1862 and Mr. March has gone to war. He recounts in lush detail the war ravaged South, the aftermath of battle, and the challenges he faces which call into question his long held beliefs.
March is meticulously researched. As a result, what emerges is a richness of time and place so vividly portrayed as to give a sense of being there without leaving the comfort of our own time and place.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8251 comments I really enjoyed this one as well.

Interesting note. E.L. Doctorow's The March was also a finalist for the Pulitzer the same year. Doctorow's Civil War novel is about General Sherman's march to the sea.
