Hannah Kelly So it seems a lot of people find Bran boring and I don't think that's fair. I think sometimes people dislike him because of his disability which makes his chapters consequently move at a slower pace. To really enjoy his chapters you have to be able to enjoy the journey so to speak to see the beauty. Bran's chapters I think are some of the of the loveliest ones because they have such an innocence to them. To really appreciate them you have to see Bran's journey as an almost spirtual quest, a journey that a boy takes that utterly transforms him after a tragedy that changed his whole life forever. But the this is from somene who also loves Colin Craven from The Secret Garden. To quote Tyrion Lannister "...I love broken things." But that same quote I also disagree with. Bran is not broken, you just have to look beyond the physical and see the whole person.

Emma I'm not reading the books, but from what I did read I found Bran really boring. And in the show, I just find him annoying. And it's not because of his disability! It's just his character.

Daniel Wusowski It takes a long time for the Bran part. During the whole journey north I found the Bran part boring. Everything before that was fine (i.e. being captive of Theon. Now his story line is my favorite one and I am more excited for new Bran chapters than any other ones. Won't spoil, though, because the TV show hasn't caught up to that :-)

Btw: My favorite chapter in ASOIAF is Bran's dream in AGOT. So he does have good parts. The story just drags on somewhat in book 3.

Mark Salacsacan I can predict that he does play a pivotal role at the end but George has to make him more interesting. Sansa was boring at the start, with her lemon cakes and her boring goals but that scene where she lies was a turning point for her character. If Bran was to have at least one aspect of him changed I would take interest in his story. For crying out loud, Hodor is more interesting than Bran.

Daniel Wusowski Are you talking about the tv show or the books, Mark?

Mark Salacsacan The books mate

Daniel Wusowski She's lying in those? About Marillion, you mean? I agree, that was a change for the better.

Mark Salacsacan Yeh the part where she lies. I get excited about her character and what she'll become. George said that she use to be a chess piece now she is a player. Will she kill Robert or Littlefinger? Who knows? I guess evil in a person is interesting for me.

Bran hasn't killed anyone nor does he have any bad motives. I'm not saying that killing someone and having bad motives is interesting it's having this 3d perspective of a character. I like characters that i think I understand and at the end look foolish because I never knew them at all. Anyways I hope Bran does get his glory in Winds of Winter or maybe the last novel.

I have to admit, I do get confused with the show and the books sometimes.

Mitali What on earth does Bran's disability have to do with not liking him? I dislike him because he's a boring character with next to no personality - not because he's disabled.

Try to describe Bran in a way that doesn't involve his supernatural abilities or his inability to walk. Is there anything unique about him as a person? For example, anyone who has read the ASoIaF books can say how Arya or Tyrion or Cersei or Sansa or Stannis will react to a particular situation - their characters are so well defined. It doesn't matter whether you like these characters or not - my point is that they have vivid personalities that mark them as individuals. There is absolutely nothing like that about Bran. That's why I dislike him, and that's why most people find him dull at best, I suspect.

Bri I think Bran is anything but boring. His chapters often depress me (He's always stuck in a bed or a basket or fighting for survival.), but he's fascinating. He's going places no one else in the books will ever go and pushing limits most people don't know exist. Sometimes his chapters are frustrating because they usually introduce far more questions than answers. I like Bran, though.

I disagree. Just because Bran is sweet and innocent does make hime boring. It seems the problem people have with Bran is that he's actually a nice person, a rare thing in these books and so people say he's "boring".
Yet people love Jaime! The man who doomed Bran to the way he lives now.

Mark Salacsacan Hannah, Bran being innocent and sweet is the prime reason why he is boring. Just imagine Arya having the same characteristics as Bran she would be dull.

Daniel Wusowski I think my problem with Bran for a time was, that his powers (warging) got old. Other characters develop their abilities, which Bran just doesn't. I liked the chapters, where he describes what warging is or how it feels. But apart from being able to warg into a human, it becomes same-old-same-old.

How does being kind make him dull? Nice doesn't = boring. And who said Arya is not kind? I always thought she was. All the characters I truly love are kind so I don't see how you only like bad characters when the book is full of good ones. Don't tell me you don't like one "kind" character?

Hannah Kelly Also this was supposed to be a thread for Bran Stark APPRECIATION thread. So if you don't appreciate Bran why are you here?

message 16: by Mark (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mark Salacsacan Hannah, who ever said I don't like nice characters. Get your facts straight. My favourite characters are Jaime, Tyrion, Doran- they are kind but also have an evil side. Btw I'm not the only one not 'Bran appreciating'.

message 17: by Hannah (new) - added it

Hannah Kelly I wasn't referring to you only and am sorry if I caused offense. I just think it a poor reason to dislike someone based on them being nice and equating this with boring.

I agree with this. What the HELL does his disability have to do with people not liking him? I mean what kind of people do you think we are Hannah?

Emma Hannah wrote: "Also this was supposed to be a thread for Bran Stark APPRECIATION thread. So if you don't appreciate Bran why are you here?"

Because obviously not a lot of people like Bran...

You need to differentiate between 'character' and 'person'. Yes, Bran is a nice person, and if I knew him real life, I would probably like him. But he's not a real person, he's a fictional one - and as a fictional character, he's pretty dull. In fiction, we don't like or dislike characters based on the same criteria that we pick our friends in real life. For example, I like Cersei as a character, because she's so power-crazy and so deluded that her chapters are fun to read - it's interesting to see how badly she'll screw up. But I wouldn't like to meet anyone like Cersei in real life.

People love Jaime for similar reasons: that he is an interesting character. He starts off as irredeemably evil, but begins to change in ASOS, and starts trying to become a better person. That's more interesting to read about than a person who is a good person from beginning to end.

That's not how discussion forums work - if everyone agreed with the OP, what's left to discuss?

Hannah Kelly Fine. I won't try to change your opinion if you don't try to change mine. I completely disagree with the boring factor but we need to just agree to disagree I think.

message 22: by Emma (new) - rated it 4 stars

Emma Why are you attempting to change our opinions?

message 23: by Hannah (new) - added it

Hannah Kelly I'm not. That's what I just said above. We just need to agree to not agree.

Stephen Hannah wrote: "...To quote Tyrion Lannister "...I love broken things." But that same quote I also disagree with. Bran is not broken, you just have to look beyond the physical and see the whole person. "

Personally I agree with Papa Hemmingway on this one...

Emma @Hannah you said 'Fine. I won't try to change your opinion if you don't try to change mine.' You're stopping trying to change our opinions. You can't change our opinions, and no one was trying to change yours :/

Hannah Kelly I really don't want this to become an argument so lets just call it done. I really didn't mean for this to just keep going.

This has been an ongoing argument for pretty much the whole thread... but it's good you are trying to stop it. I think we should.

Ben Washington Bran's age has a lot to do with the "sweet and innocent" bit. He's 7 at the start of the series. The interest I have in his character is reading about him growing up and further developing with his powers.

For instance; at the start he wants to be a knight; then he has the fall and he still clings to his dreams of knighthood. But as the stories progress that fades. He turns his attention to being more lordly, and being only 7 or 8, he does a damn cute job. lol.

But then he starts getting moments of wargy-ness. Through his insight we get little inkling indications that the Frey's are untrustworthy, and we meet the Reed's.

And let's be real, if not for Bran we'd hardly ever see Azor Ahai, the Prince that was Promised; Hodor. Hodor is the best. Don't even try to deny it.

Julia I've always liked Bran. I enjoy stories in which kids have spunk and courage. Bran doesn't have much personality, but he has spunk and courage a plenty. His first POV chapter is where I got hooked on the series, and my desire to see how he fares is second only to Arya.

But he's definitely a different kid. He's more a thinker than a doer. Or at least he's becoming one. Such people have always had a hard time earning appreciation from the general population. They have to become really powerful before people start to appreciate them. But I'd bet even Gandalf was a boring kid.

Bran has a long ways to go, but he's a tough kid. I suspect that before the series is over, we're going to see him put the hurt on someone in one form or another.
