Have you started reading and have thoughts? Here's a place to discuss them! You can also start your own thread in the folder. :)

I'm personally interested in hearing...
How different is the book from what you expected?
How do you feel about Viktor Frankenstein?
How to you feel about the monster (I've named him Ted because he deserves a better name than "monster," IMHO)?

Sarah (sarahevermotionbooks) I've read this one a few times, it's one of my favorites. The first time I read it I definitely remember being shocked at how different it was than I expected. I thought I was going to get something pulpy/horror but it's a lot more thoughtful and sad.
I personally see Viktor as a bit of a villain. I can understand how/why he got scared, but his treatment of Ted was just outright cruel and very... 'i created you, so i own you'-ish. I don't care for him at all, haha. But that's kind of the beauty of the book. Both of them are dark and twisty in their own way.
I quite like Ted, if my feelings on Viktor don't give that away. He's not perfect, he's dark and has his own evil. Ultimately though I think he was the wronged one. So I'm on his side each time.

Therese | 2 comments This was a very interesting read! The book was so different from what you've seen in movies and pictures. The fact that Victor is not telling you how he created Ted, makes you wonder why the movie-productions makes such a big deal out of it (or do we get to know, and I just missed it?). Since english is not my first language, and I read it in english, I had a heard time to follow the part were Victor talked about his research. But after that part I really think the story sped up.
I thought Victor was such an irresponsible and whiny character, and I really didn't like him. Ted, on the other hand, was really interesting. I thought his part of the story was the best part, and I actually rooted for Ted, even though his actions were terrible. But I think you got a better understanding for his actions, than for Victor's.

Alistair | 6 comments Just thought I'd "shoutout" Gris Grimly's Frankenstein, the original story but with illustrations in a slightly "steam-punk" style.
It won't be cheap but worth checking if your library has a copy.

And the real monster of the story is Victor. :-)

I've read that! I'd second that shoutout. The illustrations add an interesting touch.

Ripple So i just finished the first half!
This book is SOO different than i expected!
The monster/creation/Ted i have a lot of sympathy for. So far at least, he just awoke knowing nothing, like basically being a baby intelligence-wise and he just leaves him alone and lets him fend for himself :|
Also he's clearly intelligent and capable of compassion, but he looks ugly, so people are scared/judgey. That's some BS discrimination right there.

Lena Fickle (unicronq) | 6 comments I finally started reading Frankenstein and am at 63%. I feel some sympathy for both Victor and Ted. Victor seems to have problems with depression, which I understand. Ted almost seems to be autistic, which is something I share. I also understand the feelings of abandonment and not fitting in. I probably feel more for Ted. I also love Mary Shelley's writing style.
